TYPES OF FOODS
THAT FIGHT
DEPRESSION
Foods that fight depression
increase the serotonin levels in the
body and/or provide a calming
effect. Such include:
1. Seafood (fish and crustaceans)
Examples: crab, sardines,
shrimp, oysters, clam, salmon,
crayfish, prawns, tuna, trout,
herring, cat fish, cod
2. Whole grains
Examples: barley, millet, sorghum,
whole grain rice, buckwheat , whole
grain pasta, oatmeal, quinoa, bulgur
3. foods rich in omega3
Examples: navy beans, avocados,
chia seeds, flax seeds, Brussel
sprouts, oysters, walnuts, canola
and soybean oils, tuna, mackerel,
salmon
4.Foods rich in vitamin C
Examples: oranges, papaya, kiwi,
bell peppers, guavas, broccoli
,kale grapefruit, strawberries,
tomato, snow peas
5.Leafy vegetables
Examples: kale, spinach, collard
greens, dandelion greens, Swiss
chard, Bok Choy, mustard greens
6.Foods rich in vitamin E
Examples: wheat germ, sunflower
seeds, peanuts, pumpkin,
almonds, soybean oil, sunflower
oil, peanut butter, collard greens
7. Low fat dairy
Examples: low fat milk, lean beef,
skinless turkey, low fat yoghurt
In general, a balanced diet can help
fight depression.
Remember not to eat excess amounts
of any of the foods mentioned.
