1. Marking criteria – Independent Study

Targets
There is some evidence of independent work here Sav, but it’s a little
disorganised at the moment. You have clear sections but there are different
pieces of work in each area. This needs organising. This will help you when you
construct your essay. Use the sheet I gave you to help you organise this more
efficiently.
You need to show more evidence of applying the theories to your case studies.
This needs to be done independently. You need to ensure you are updating
this on a weekly basis. Applying the new theories to the existing films. You
need to decide on which films you are going to case study and ensure you are
up to date with the tasks on each one: An analysis sheet, research on the
institution: director – intentions etc, and the audience response. Link this to

Evidence of research There is some evidence of research and
reviews, however, only for one film?
Understanding of theory Good understanding of theory. You
demonstrate this through your notes made
during lesson. There is some evidence of
you researching some of these ideas in
more depth, but little evidence of this for
the more recent examples we have looked
at.
Application of theory Some evidence of application of theory, but
this has mostly been done during lesson
time. Little evidence of this being extended
independently.
Analysis of media form Some evidence of film analysis, although
not a great deal. Where are all of the notes
on the 9 films we have watched?
Understanding of audience Some evidence of reviews, but only for
Sket.
Understanding of Institution Little evidence of institutional research:
directors, producers, actors, film
companies, distribution etc.

2. Hall’s encoding/decoding theory. You also need to start considering the key
theories you are going to consider in your essay and apply them to your case
studies! Bit more organisation and independent work needed Sav.
