The ZimMedia21 project will strengthen citizen engagement in marginalized rural and urban communities in Zimbabwe through innovative media and communication platforms over 36 months from May 2019 to April 2022 with a budget of SEK 40,122,148. The project will work to narrow information and communication gaps, amplify voices of youth and women, and increase participation. It will also strengthen targeted media and support media policy and law reform to protect journalists. The overall goal is for informed citizens to freely participate in democratic governance and development.

They surveyed 456 citizens, 116 of whom had digital access to budget information provided by BudgIT, while 249 citizens in 10 communities were provided printed budget documents. The study found that access to clear budget information increased citizens' interest in development projects by over 95% for both digital and non-digital citizens. While more non-digital citizens visited project sites after receiving information, digital citizens were more likely to engage government officials about projects. The SEE2 programme supported 270 social enterprises and 107 pre-start social enterprises in South Yorkshire from 2019-2023. It exceeded targets by providing at least 12 hours of assistance to 154 enterprises and awarding 83 grants. Surveys found the support contributed to resilience and growth for 87% of enterprises. The programme's social return on investment was calculated at £6.52 for every £1 invested. It helped create 42 jobs and 58 new social enterprises while focusing on sectors like health, education, and the environment. Challenges included the pandemic, but the evaluation found the flexible support model to be successful overall.

Participatory development
Participatory development seeks to engage local populations in development projects to strengthen their influence over decisions and resources. It empowers groups to negotiate with institutions, improves efficiency and sustainability of programs, and checks government power. Effective participatory development requires identifying stakeholders like community groups, governments, NGOs and donors, and incorporating their input at all stages through methods ranging from information sharing to shared control. Examples from Philippines projects demonstrate how participatory planning at village, municipal and provincial levels built social capital and empowered communities.

Loksabha Election 2019: 90 Plus Voting CampaignBanda is a district of 1.8 million people in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Unfortunately, in recent years, Banda has become known for water scarcity, unemployment, farmer distress, underdeveloped agriculture, and corruption. These issues have spurred significant political rivalry; as a result, the Election Commission has identified 195 of the 1,454 polling booths in the Baberu, Banda, Naraini, and Tindwari constituencies as “critical”.
Motivated by these challenges, I set out to increase voter turnout and improve the sense of civic engagement in Banda, and involved the whole district administration towards this goal. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, 53 percent of registered electors in Banda voted. For the 2019 elections, I set an ambitious target of 90 percent turnout. To achieve this, I led my team to devise the “90 Plus” strategy, which leveraged a plethora of initiatives and communication channels from the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme. A total of 825,907 people voted in Banda District in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, out of 1,314,368 registered electors (62.8%). In 2014, the average total turnout was 53.38%. The 10-percentage point increase is remarkable given the ground-level challenges that confronted the ambitious project target. The significance of this scheme was acknowledged by the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in a rally that he addressed here in the district.

The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:

The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

AHMR is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed online journal created to encourage and facilitate the study of all aspects (socio-economic, political, legislative and developmental) of Human Mobility in Africa. Through the publication of original research, policy discussions and evidence research papers AHMR provides a comprehensive forum devoted exclusively to the analysis of contemporaneous trends, migration patterns and some of the most important migration-related issues.

Outcome Area 1 Information & communication gap narrowed in targeted marginalized rural and urban communities, with youth’s and women’s voices amplified and participation increased Outcome Area 3 Citizen and rights centred media policy and law reform, and protection of safe journalistic working conditions, supported and enhanced. Outcome Area 2 Targeted media professionally and financially strengthened to provide high-quality public interest content with a balanced presence of women and men. Specific objective: Credible mainstream and alternative media enable and inform actions of marginalised communities in rural and urban areas, promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusion in close collaboration with civil society.
