This document announces an event about intellectual property for entrepreneurs. It will feature presentations from three speakers: patent attorney Robert Plotkin, who will discuss obtaining patents; patent attorney Dr. Kuangshin Tai, who will focus on patent portfolio strategy; and Dr. Steven Gold, an inventor and entrepreneur who will discuss his experience starting technology companies. The event will be moderated by Dr. Teesta Jain and include time for questions and answers with the panel of speakers.

Dr. Kuangshin Tai is a patent attorney working with clients ranging from start-ups to
large corporations in addressing their intellectual property needs. His practice focuses
on patent portfolio strategy and development, patent prosecution, IP diligence,
competitive analysis, clearance to market studies, and patent validity and infringement
opinions. Previously, he has a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in
Material Science and Engineering and bachelors from University of California, Berkeley.
Kuangshin has authored numerous scientific publications appearing in journals such as
Nature Materials, Nano Letters, Journal of Biomechanics, and Tissue Engineering.
Robert Plotkin is a patent attorney specializing in patents on computer hardware,
software, and Internet technology. Attorney Plotkin has nearly two decades of
experience obtaining patents for clients ranging from individual inventors to
multinational corporations including Hewlett Packard, 3M, and Tata Consultancy
Services. Previously, Attorney Plotkin taught an advanced course on “Software and the
Law” for six years at the Boston University School of Law, where he had previously
obtained his law degree after obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and
Engineering from MIT. He is the author of The Genie in the Machine: How Computer
Automated Inventing is Revolutionizing Law and Business, published by Stanford
University Press in 2009.
Dr. Steven K. Gold is Chairman of Gold Global Advisors – a firm that advises clients at
the intersection of entrepreneurship, IP and corporate performance. He is a successful
inventor who holds 10 issued patents, and serves as Managing Director of N99 LLC,
an intellectual property holding company that has licensed his patents to dozens of
leading corporations. Steve is an experienced entrepreneur who co-founded and led a
series of technology companies. He earned his B.S.E. in Entrepreneurial Management
from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a M.D. from Brown
University Medical School, and completed the Program in Negotiation at Harvard Law
School. Steve is the author of Entrepreneur's Notebook: Practical Advice for Starting a
New Business Venture.
The Moderator: Dr. Teesta Jain has a PhD in Biochemistry and is working in business
development at the interface of life sciences and healthcare and its commercialization.
Her interests are technology, innovation, healthcare access, and provider-payer relationships.
