The document discusses how virtual and augmented reality technologies can be used to induce a state of "flow", which is a state of intense focus and engagement in an activity. It describes how VR in particular can help users lose sense of the outside world and feel fully present in a virtual experience. The document suggests that instead of just passive consumption, VR could be used to create tools that allow active participation and collaboration, helping users achieve flow through creative challenges. Looking to the future, it speculates that advances in areas like wearables, biotech, nanotech could lead to immersive "emotional sensory experiences" that go beyond traditional notions of VR and AR.
4. When we talk about virtual / augmented reality most of the time we are always talking about some device: Google Cardboard,
Samsung Gear, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Hololens, Magic Leap... And so on, we could literally spend hours here listing these
devices.
7. “YOU LOOSE!”
by tech.
Whenever these technologies are shown or predicted, we think of something negative, where we may be isolated beings playing and
interacting with things that do not even exist. The Black Mirror series has shown a lot of that, movies have portrayed many chaotic scenarios -
Matrix, Her, Uncanny Valley - our mother has warned her since we were kid when she talked about dropping the video game and playing in
the street.
8. But we think differently, and we believe that this may be, once again, as the internet was, a possibility of connecting people, where we can
maximize, expand and multiply our capacities, causing us to achieve things that we do not even think are possible.
9. FLOW
And one of the paths we believe to have been exponentially enhanced by these technologies is something well known today: Flow.
10. FLOW is a term from Psychology defining when we are so focused on an activity that we forget time, hunger, fatigue, anything other than
what we are doing.
11. For example, when I'm so involved doing a design, I forget everything, the noise around, the time passes, the whole world around me.
12. MIHALY CSIKSZENTMIHALYI
PAPA DO FLOW
This concept came from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who is a psychologist, researcher and the father of FLOW.
13. nível
máximo
da
performance
For more than 40 years, he and other researchers have discovered that artists and athletes have reached this stage at several
times in their lives. It is when a musician is in a trance playing, when an athlete is at the maximum level of performance, or when
we jump from the stratosphere with a parachute.

16. ATIVIDADES SIGNIFICATIVAS ->
FLOW = FELICIDADE
They are activities that gave meaning to their lives and make them happy. The researchers hypothesis is that getting into the flow
and reaching for the maximum would be one of our purposes in life. After all everyone wants to be happy, or feel happy.
18. This is a TED Talks video from 2004, in which Mihaly describes how a pianist and composer who
was part of the research in the 70's felt in a state of flow:
“He needs just a piece of paper where he can put down little marks, and as he does that, he can
imagine sounds that had not existed before in that particular combination. So even he gets to
that point of beginning to create, like Jennifer did in her improvisation, a new reality - that is, a
moment of ecstasy - he enters that different reality. Now, I say that this is an intense experience
that it feels almost as if it did not exist.”
The term other reality, alternative reality, appears about 20 times in the descriptions of those
surveyed by Mihaly in the video.
19. PERDA DO SENSO DE PRESENÇA
One of the great powers of virtual reality is to allow people to experience so intensely a reality, an experience, that we lose the
sense of our presence very fast and forget what is around us - time, space. Virtual reality can get us into FLOW like no other way
before. Our subconscious believes that we are in this flow.
20. FLOW
SOB DEMANDA
GATILHOS
CRIAR EXPERIÊNCIAS
Studies about Flow and advances in virtual reality will allow us to create such emotional experiences - Triggers to our minds. We
will be able to create a perpetual state of flow. We can do this on demand. Want a Happiness package? Just download it!
21. É VICIANTE.
But we know that it is not so easy. This state of flow is addictive. Anyone that plays video games knows that you get easily carried
away, entering these states and always want more. And it is much more addictive when you are in virtual reality, where we lose
the notion of the world around in every way. But this way we hit the flow passively.
22. FLOW é quando nos sentimos &
fazemos o nosso melhor.
But what would be the antidote to this? For researchers when we naturally enter a state of flow usually is when we are in
activities of creation, construction, overcoming challenges - challenging ourselves.
Researches say that when we are in the state of Flow is when we feel better and do our best.
23. FERRAMENTAS E AMBIENTES
So instead of just creating experiences for people to use it passively, we need to create tools, environments that can help anyone
take an active role in virtual reality. We already have Tilt Brush, from Google, for 3D paintings in virtual reality, which became a hit
among artists.
26. CONEXÕES
Creating these tools also has another positive side: it creates connections. Instead of isolating yourself in VR, we may be
creating together. And studies indicate that entering states of flow together is far superior to entering alone.
27. estado de FLOW -
além da bebedeira.
If you can not remember how much time you spent at the bar drinking with your friends, you're likely to have gone into a state of
flow - besides drunkenness ;D
28. FLOW + REALIDADE VIRTUAL = explorar potencial humano
If we apply flow psychology to virtual and augmented reality, we will not only be working with happiness in our lives. Through
experiences, tools and virtual environments we will be accessing areas of our mind that can exploit human potential in
unimaginable ways
29. We have evolved more and more in these technologies that will allow us to reach the state of flow.
If we now only have our vision and hands to use in virtual/augmented reality, you better get ready, because our other senses will
soon allow a quantum leap in the immersion of the flow state.
30. RoupasG - Interactive Architecture Lab
Imagine that all your clothing can react to the stimulus you receive virtually.
31. Cheiro - Vaqso VR
How about if inside some experience in a forest you can smell the leaves and trees around you?
32. EKG - Neurable
There are people already messing around with our brains, and we could think in order to interact with something virtual.
Picture you just think that your character is walking through some environment, and this really happens.
33. inteligência
artificial
With the use of AI you could touch a virtual insect and it can feel your touch and react to it in a totally real and spontaneous way.
34. biotecnologia
With biotech we can merge with technology and we have various parts of our body improved by it.
Be it having eyes that can see better - or that see things in the real world that are beyond our imagination.
35. nanotecnologia
And we could improve our bodies on a cellular level with nanotechnology, which are so small and intelligent technologies that
could enter inside us and exponentiate our physical capacities
36. So with all of this, your next virtual experience may not be on a VR/AR device.
But with a pill that you are going to take and that experience is going to happen inside of you.
