Welcome, my name is Victoria Flint, and I will be discussing professional basketball reform. The US has long been the home of the greatest basketball teams and league, but this could change due to unprofitable teams and and more importantly, a poor minor league system.
What is the Problem?1.Too many teams in NBA are unprofitable by end of the season (salaries too high for a losing season)-after 2010-11 season, 15 teams were unprofitable-after 2011-12 season, 22 teams were unprofitable2.NBA D-League not used for its intended purpose -Great talent going to European Leagues, where there is higher pay than the NBA D-League -Teams not promoted for successful seasons
What is the purpose of NBA D-League?1.It is the official minor league of the NBA -it is a “farm system”2.whose role is to provide experience and training for young players, with an agreement that any successful players can move on to a higher level at any given point -problem is that this system is being used as a one-way system3.”Over 15% of current NBA players are NBA D-League alumni”—NBA.com -NBA teams have “full-access” to D-League players and vice versa4. During 2011-2012 season, 50 players were called up to play in the NBA
Explain what this would include: What are Promotion zones? What are Relegation zones? How do we fix the problem?-Promotion/Relegation Sport System-Promotion zone-Relegation zone (drop zone)-Includes majors, minors and regional zones
The 3 bottom teams in the NBA would be relegated and the 3 top teams in the NBA D-League would be promoted to the NBA -3 NBA teams were unprofitable at the end of the season (magic had -23.1 million, bobcats had -20 million
This is what the start of the next season would look like
What else would this affect? This would make games more competitive1. This would build camaraderie amongst teams because basketball is a team sport -teams lose momentum because they are not awarded with positive outcomes, if we could compensate these good outcomes…. -teams and players could prove their worth as they build momentum into the NBA after winning the NBA D-League -players could make their own opportunities instead of waiting for the call that never comes2. This would change salaries, especially teams that move up -NBA teams relegated would have to minimize salaries -would make minor league salaries more competitive with the European Leagues -would avoid lockouts3. This would make games and seasons more competitive
So If you want to avoid losing the Olympics, its crucial that we change the system
