A firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic and blocks or permits data packets based on security rules. It analyzes traffic according to pre-configured rules, filtering traffic from suspicious sources and only allowing reliable traffic through. There are host-based firewalls that protect individual devices and network-based firewalls that protect entire networks. Firewall rules can specify IP addresses, domain names, protocols, programs, and ports.
