- The last conference was in Wellington or the middle of middle earth as it was renamed for the week as it was the week that the Hobbit premiered. Everyday I made an effort to met someone new and I met up with a little gang of friends/colleagues who caught up with during the day. I tend to gravitate towards the people who are active in the Twitterverse as they wont get annoyed by my attention being on title, little screens during the sessions, during breaks, after breaks after hours, at night actually. <pretend to tweet>. I am slaying them all at the first timers breakfast don’t you wish you were here too #aliaonline13. You’ll see us huddled near power points and we are often lit up by and eerie glow from our smart phones and tablets One of the best ways to get more out of the conference is to become part of the twitter backchannel or even lurk. That’ s okay. However can I just say that some of the most enduring friendships I have made in the library universe is by following someone on twitter, meeting them in real life and then continuing connection after the conference. The same goes for non-library conferences.
- Join in the conversations. Become a part of the community. Look for ways to collaborate. If you go to a really awesome thought provoking paper – ask great questions and/or go and have a chat to the speaker. It is all about find the rainbow connection.
- This is my favourite moment in my trip to middle earth. I also met Andy Serkis who is the actor who plays Gollum and Caesar in Rise of Planet of the Apes. We also met James Nesbitt. By taking a few risks and being in the right place at the right time. I had a moment with Hugo Weaving: I really love your work Mr Weaving (who was surrounded by his PR team. He turned around, made eye-contact and said.... Thank you.
