Fire poses serious risks to safety and property in the United States. Each year over 4,500 people lose their lives to fires and 26,500 are injured. Fires most often start in the kitchen and are typically caused by cooking, smoking, heating systems, or arson. Those most at risk are senior citizens, young children, and men. Both on and off the job, it is important to reduce fire risks through safe practices like keeping flammables stored properly, maintaining equipment, having evacuation plans and meeting points, and routinely inspecting smoke detectors and fire equipment.
