A Welcome from the Gastro 2013 Steering Committee and Local Organizing
Committee
Welcome to Gastro 2013 APDW/WCOG Shanghai, an outstanding and dynamic program organized by our four global partners
- Asia Pacific Digestive Week Federation (APDWF), the Chinese Societies of Digestive Diseases (CSDD), the World Endoscopy

WELCOME Address
A Welcome from the Gastro 2013 Scientific Program Committee
It is with great pleasure that the Gastro 2013 Scientific Program Committee presents the Scientific Program for Gastro 2013
APDW/WCOG Shanghai. Under the chairmanship of Professors Eamonn Quigley and Kentaro Sugano and with the input
of members from all participating societies, the Gastro 2013 Scientific Program Committee has endeavored to develop a
program which meets the diverse educational needs of all of the many attendees to this congress. In developing the program
our aim was, firstly, to cover the broad field that is modern and, secondly, to emphasize those topics that are currently of
greatest interest to both the practicing gastroenterologist and the clinical investigator.
In addition to the four primary tracks of symposia; Endoscopy, Upper GI, Lower GI and Liver Disease, we are also proud to
present a Postgraduate Course and Live Demonstration Endoscopy Program on the opening day. A unique aspect of the
program will be the inclusion of features that are characteristic of World Congresses and Asia-Pacific Digestive Diseases
Week: Opening Plenary Sessions highlighting nine Named Lectureships, nine Working Party Reports, three full days of Free
Paper Sessions, the SIGNEA Nursing Program, WEO Learning Center, the Young Clinicians Program, Poster Presentations, the
Technical Exhibition, and lunch and dinner Industry Symposia; together these contribute to an outstanding World Congress.
We are pleased to announce that we have received a record submission of 2,422 abstracts! It is with enormous gratitude, on
behalf of the Gastro 2013 Scientific Program Committee, that we extend our sincerest appreciation to our abstract reviewers
for their contributions. We realize the amount of personal time and effort that this process requires and are grateful for their
invaluable expertise in various clinical areas. We would also like to recognize and thank Professor Zhao-shen Li and the
clinical and administrative staff at Changhai Hospital for their collaborative coordination of the Live Demonstration Endoscopy
sessions with our WEO colleagues, as well as the local organization of the YCP, under the direction of Professors Kai-chun Wu
and Duo-wu Zou.
We ensure that the Gastro 2013 Scientific Program will amount to all that you have come to expect from the quadrennial
World Congress in the beautiful and exciting city of Shanghai!
Many thanks to those of you in China and Worldwide who made a significant contribution to helping make the Gastro
2013 APDW/WCOG Shanghai Scientific Program a success!
Sincerely,
Professor Eamonn Quigley Professor Kentaro Sugano

Cuisine
As an international city, Shanghai offers all kinds of cuisines
from around the world. Of course, the majority of restaurants
offer Chinese food at reasonable prices.
Chinese food is famous for having eight major cuisines:
Sichuan, Zhejiang, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Fujian,
Cantonese and Anhui. Not surprisingly, Shanghai Cuisine,
also known as Ben Bang, is not one of the eight major
cuisines styles. Give it a try, you may enjoy it, but Westerners
often complain that it’s too sweet and oily. If you have a more
spicy palate consider going to one of the city’s many Sichuan
or Hunan restaurants. The food is fantastic and won’t put a
big dent in your wallet.
Please note that the vast majority of restaurants and public
places freely allow smoking and do not have non-smoking
sections.
Try to master chopsticks. Most Chinese restaurants don’t
provide forks and knives.

Shopping
Shanghai is a shopper’s paradise; the streets are thickly

of the famous Chinese and foreign brands and the latest
fashions can be found within the city. Souvenir stores are
concentrated on Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road, Sichuan Road
North, Yuyuan Bazaar, and Xujiahui. A special shopping
excursion from Yuyuan Bazaar to Nanjing Road and then
to Zhangyang Road of Pudong brings visitors on a tour of
discovery of the city’s commodities and its ancient, modern
and contemporary history. Consider taking the Shanghai
Shopping Tour CT-3 (See details on page 64).

treatment and place major emphasis on innovative advances
in the management of gastrointestinal, hepatic and related
disorders. Sunday through Tuesday, 22-24 September,
symposia will be offered in four primary tracks: Endoscopy,
Upper GI, Lower GI, and Liver Disease.
The Endoscopy track on 22-24 September will feature
symposia reporting on a broad spectrum of current topics
including two Working Party Reports that will be highlighted
within these sessions; keep reading for further information
on the Working Party Reports that will be presented during
these symposia. Also integrated into the Endoscopy track are
Live Demonstration Endoscopy sessions where attendees
will have the opportunity to observe experts as they guide
delegates through a series of endoscopic techniques in real
time.
The Upper GI, Lower GI and Liver Disease tracks will each
feature nine symposia spread over the three days of the Main
Meeting, 22-24 September. Topics will cover new and cutting-
edge information on the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis
and treatment of the broad range of gastrointestinal, liver
and related disorders. Seven Working Party Reports will be
highlighted throughout these three tracks. Presentations will
focus on the fusion of basic science and clinical practice with
