                   Reflection for Final Portfolio
I haven’t ever been one to excel in English classes, or even been one to enjoy

them either. However the way that Sue Briggs conducts her class has changed the way I

feel about English and writing. It’s not your traditional class where the teacher assigns

you the same boring topics to write about, but rather an opportunity of freedom to write

about whatever you want. What I love is that when our papers get graded its more

supportive criticism on how we can improve as a writer, and you don’t feel like you’ve

let everyone and their dog down for doing something wrong. In this class I enjoyed our

writing assignments and being creative.

Looking back on some of the papers that I’ve written over the semester, it’s

interesting to see the change in how I write as opposed to past semesters and how I’ve

improved. For my first piece I profiled my dad and his life as a school teacher, and I

loved thinking more in detail about what he does. I’ve grown up with him and taken

everything for granted with what he does, but because of this assignment I was able to

put the puzzle together piece by piece and realize what a difference he makes in the lives

of so many people in and out of the classroom. I was able to see really how much work it

took to be a teacher, and a good one at that. It was a fun experience to be able to write

about my own dad in a college level English class.

My review on the movie The Vow was a little less personal but I still really

enjoyed it. I had never really written a review on anything so it was invigorating to write

one about something I indulge in during my free time. The best part about this
assignment was that I made a date out of it with my wife. It didn’t even feel like

homework, but more of a fun thing to do.

I had a little more trouble with the Position/Proposal, probably because it was

about a more serious topic. Doing the research for my topic Broken Homes was

interesting yet difficult at the same time. This assignment was the only one that I disliked

this whole semester. The preparation and guidance from Sue was very helpful and made

the process easier, but putting the information onto paper and doing it correctly was

harder for me. I feel like in the future if I ever have to write another paper like it I will be

a lot better off because I would choose an easier topic and have a better know how of

how to go about writing it.

The multimodal project was a lot of fun. I enjoyed getting into a good group and

doing an assignment together. It was amazing how well we worked together and all the

unique ideas each of us had. I prefer group projects most of the time as long as everyone

works together equally for the same purpose. Again I loved the freedom of choosing our

topic and how we would present it to the class. Like I said before, the freedom in this

class made it my favorite English class I’ve ever had. I wish everyone could experience a

class like this one, I know it would make a difference in success rates in students.
