2. In this article I will be talking about different aspects of certain jobs in the TV and film industry.
Throughout the process of making a TV program or a feature film, there are many different stages within
this process such as the beginning of the process which is the pre production stage, this consists of
gathering ideas, planning as well as gathering and hiring the staff that is needed to provide help with film
making ideas. After this stage, it then consists of the production stage which then is the film making in
process with the ideas they gathered, The last process of this which is then the post production stage
which is when the final edit of the film is sent out to different cinemas as well as DVD etc. Within this
whole process, there are a huge range of job roles that are involved with the making of the film. In this
article, I will be explaining a small range of different job roles within the stages of production.

3. 1. Production manager (Management)
What there job role is:
A production manager prepare production schedules or even script breakdowns, this is to confirm the
sufficient time that has been assigned for all aspects of the production process, this also helps to verify the
producers budgets and schedules. In order to help the production manager keep on track with what is
happening, there are a range of software's which provides help to keep the scheduling and budget in order.
The type of category the job fits under:
A production manager mainly comes under a managerial job, this is because the job of a production
manager is to keep the production within there schedule as well as organizing the business, finance and
employment within the TV industry. In addition to this a production manager can also a an organisational
job, the reason for this is everything has to be organized to make it easier to work with etc.
The day to day duties of the job role:
One of the main duties for a production manger is to keep the finance and the budget organized, in order
to make sure the budget is not over the price limit that they have for the production, that is one of the
main day to day jobs the production manager would have, as the budget has to be within the amount
they can spend.
The responsibilities of the job role:
The responsibility a production manager has is to keep the production, the business, the finance as well
as the employees in tact and in order.
What stage of production do they maintain?:
The manager can be seen to work in within all the production types. The reason for this is the manager
needs to keep everything organized throughout the whole production, whether it is to keep the set
organized or any of the finance.

4. 2. Costume designer (Creative)
What there job role is:
The process of the costume designing starts working at the beginning of pre‐production. The costume
designer is in charger of designing, creating, acquiring and hiring all costume for the actors as well as the
extras. The costumes brought have to be within the strict budget that has been given to them, this is so
there is enough money to buy the costumes they need and not go over the limited amount that has been
given to them. The role of a costume designer requires a great deal of expertise, the reason for this is there
creativity ranges from designing original costumes, to overseeing purchases to ready made outfits.

The Job of a costume designer falls under a creative category, the reason for this is costume designing is all
about creating a unique outfit and costume to fit the character they are designing for. As it is a creative job,
the skills needed are very high as the main thing is to be creative for this role.
The day to day duties of the job role:
As a costume designer is usually also the head of the costume department, they are responsible for staffing
and managing the team and there skills. In addition to this costume designers also have to supervise a more
practical issue such as the departments budgets and schedules, the organisation of the wardrobes as well as
the costume continuity. All this is a day to day job the costume designers have to keep on track with.
Within there day to day job, as the filming is in process, the costume designer I expected to work closely
with the production designer, the reason for this is to make sure the costumes fit with the overall vision
with what they want for what they want with the characters costumes, in addition to this the costume
designer would also be working close with hair and make‐up to make sure it suits the costume as well as the
character the actor/actress will be playing. This job occurs in the production stage of filming, as the
costumes would be needed when filming.
The responsibilities of the job role:
The responsibility of a costume designer is to make sure all the costumes are ready when the director is
about to film, as well as make sure the costumes are up to the directors standards and it is what they want.

5. 3. Stage manager (Organizational)
What there job role is:
The role of the stage manager is to work with the director throughout the production, also known as the
director’s right hand man. The stage manager keeps track of rehearsal schedules, scripts, props as well as
actors during the rehearsal process. After everything is done with rehearsals, the stage manager is then in
charge and has control over everything that happens backstage or onstage.

A stage manager is a organizational job, the reason for this is as stage manager keeps track of everything
within the set and making sure everything is organized well. By having everything organized neatly, it makes
it easier for the stage manager to keep on track with everything for example having an organized schedule
means it would easier to follow.
The day to day duties of the job role:
The day to day duties for a stage manager is to be in charge and have control over the production during the
performance. The reason why the stage manager has this responsibility as there role is to work with
director. Not only does the stage manager serve assistance to the director, but also provides an assistance
to the designers, technical directors, costumes supervisors etc. Everyone within the production have to
always report back to the stage manager, which then the stage manager reports back to the director of any
of the issues that should be looked into. The stage manager has a number of duties to perform throughout
the entire production process, some of which he might delegate to other individuals. The job of a stage
manager would fall under the production stage as they would need to prepare the stage for the characters.
The responsibilities of the job role:
The main responsibilities of the stage manager is to make sure everything is organized well. As the stage
manager is usually ordered by the director, the job of the stage manager is harder as to which they have to
make sure everything is prepared and organized whilst the production is in process.

6. 4. Video editor (Editorial)
What there job role is:
The role of a video editor is to prepare the final edit of the product. By doing this they start by taking any
raw footage at the post production stage and choosing the best shots, they then out the shots they have
chosen in order, as well as the sound, graphics and special effects in which what the director would want.
Video editors would usually use digital technology as well as computer software to edit the picture and
sound. With the help of the software you can edit any type of projects such as feature films, TV programs,
commercials etc.
The type of category the job fits under:
A video editor would fall under the category of a technical job, the reason for this is firstly, editing is very
technical as most of it is done by using a computer software as well as digital technology. Video editing
takes a long period of time as you have to choose the footage that you think would fit well together and edit
the pieces together. Also with editing you have to think of any other technical aspects that might need to be
considered such as the sound, special effects etc. All of this would also fall under technical as most of it is
very computer based.
The day to day duties of the job role:
The duty of a video editor is to have the responsibility for assembling recorded raw footage into a finished
product suitable for broadcasting. A video editor starts to edit the footage towards the end of the
production which in this case is the post production. All the video editor does is gathers the footage that has
been given to him/her and start to put the footage together to see what fits well as well as to create a clean
and smooth finish.
The responsibilities of the job role:
The responsibilities the video editor has is to make sure the final edit meets the directors requirements, this
is a big responsibility as the final edit is a major part throughout out the whole production as anything could
go wrong whilst creating the final edit. When this process is in action, the director is sometimes needed
whilst the editing Is happening the reason for this is to make sure the edit is going the way the director
wants it to as well as the way the director visions the final edit of the production.

7. 5. Accounting assistant (Finance)
What there job role is:
The role of an accounting assistant is to perform clerical work in support of any of the company accounts as
well as utilizes the financial management software. The accounting assistant should be able to analyse,
reconcile, and verify any financial and statistical data in addition to this, they also need to perform any
related work which was assigned to them by their superiors.
The type of category the job fits under:
An accounting assistant falls under the financial category, the reason for this is an accounting assistant
manages all the different aspects of finance within the production some of this would consist of managing
the company accounts , keep a record of the productions budget etc. In order to become an accounting
assistant your knowledge in finance has to be high.
The day to day duties of the job role:
The day to day duties of an accounting assistant is to assist in the running of the accounts office.
Accounting assistants also help the production accounts to maintain records of invoices as well creditors
payments. The accounting assistant keeps all records of any transactions that have happened, responsible
for any preparation's of the accounts, purchase orders as well as petty cash and payroll calculations etc. In
addition to this assistant accountants also process cheques as well as carrying out other duties which have
been assigned to the assistant by the production accountant. This job role is suitable for the post production
stage as the finance of the film would be done.
The responsibilities of the job role:
The responsibilities an accounting assistant has is to make sure the jobs that where given from the
production accountant have been completed the way the production accountant wants it to be. In addition
to this another responsibility a accountant assistant has to process any of the cheques that is in need of
being process for the production. This is a very important responsibility to take on as you have to make sure
nothing happens to the cheques.

8. 6. Researcher (Research)
What there job role is:
The role of a researcher is to work over different genres of TV production such as news, sports, current
affairs, documentaries, factual programs, light entertainment, situation comedies, soaps or serial dramas,
one‐off dramas etc. Researchers originate and develop ideas for programs. After they have found a stable
knowledge and understanding of the type of program, the researcher then presents their findings to the
decision makers. In addition to this researchers are also fact checkers as well as brief writers for on screen
presenters. The role of a researcher is very important within the production process.

The role of a researcher would fall under the category of researching. With researching you have to find
different ways and types of research that would benefit you when you are trying to find certain types of
information for anything, this links with the researcher. As a researcher is the person who goes out and
gathers the information that is needed for the production.
The day to day duties of the job role:
The day to day job of a researcher is to make sure they have done enough research on a particular task set
to them. The role of a researcher on a production is usually gathering true facts and information's for them
to have a successful production, by doing this they gather every piece of information that is needed and
creates a presentation to then show the director with the different types of ideas and information they have
found. The job role of a researcher would fit well with the pre production stage, the reason for this is they
would researching gathered for the type they want to make etc.
The responsibilities of the job role:
The responsibilities a researcher has is to make sure the facts and information they gather are true and real,
this is a major responsibility because they can use false information in there production which viewers then
would find disturbing as well as upsetting.

9. 7. Camera operator (Technical)
What there job role is:
The role of a camera operator is someone who works with digitals, this consists of electronic and film
cameras in multi and single camera operational conditions, producing pictures for directors with the use of
complex technology and creative visual skills together etc. The job of the camera operator is usually either
based in a studio which the camera operator follows a camera script or on location which there is more of a
chance of creativity.
The type of category the job fits under:
The role of a camera operator would fall under a technical job, the reason for this is most of the work that a
camera operator has to do is computer and software based including the camera use. The camera operator
has more control over the digital side of the camera.
The day to day duties of the job role:
The day to day duties of a camera operator is to make sure any of the camera equipment is working before
the filming is done, this is so there are no complications whilst filming. Another day to day duty is to have
different technical aspects of the camera, so when they are filming the camera operator knows how to use
the camera the way the director would like it to be.
The responsibilities of the job role:
The responsibilities of a camera operator would be to discuss as well as review different aspects of filming,
determine different technical aspects, before shooting the film camera lenses tests have to be made to
make sure everything is working well ready for shooting etc.

Michael Westmore (born March 22, 1938) is an American make‐up artist.
Westmore is one of the most legendary make‐up artist as he is known from
the characters make‐up on the TV program and any of the start trek films. In
addition to this Westmore is also known for the films he has done such as,
‘The Mask’, ‘The Day After’, The rocky film etc. A few of Westmore’s most
famous TV series where the ‘Star Trek Enterprise’ and ‘MacGyver’ all of this
is just a few of Westmore’s work he has worked on as a make‐up artist. After
graduating from University of California‐Santa Barbara in 1961, he then
began working for the Universal Studios that same year as a make‐up artist,
After the three years of working there Westmore was then promoted to
Assistant Department Head of make‐up. After doing a few films he then
became a freelance make‐up artist during the 1970’s‐80’s.
Throughout his time of being a make‐up artist he has won a range awards
including a Oscar and nine Emmy Awards.
As the Westmore family was well known for there amazing talents of
makeup artists, they where honoured with a star on the walk of fame.
What I have learnt from Westmore is you can have a small part in a
production as a beginner make‐up artist, but then grow into something
bigger such as creating masks etc. and trying out different types of materials
whilst your developing your career.
