1. Sweeney Todd demon barber of Fleet Street - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKv6XlsJUjs
Name: Isis Garstang My Analysis Supporting Images
Cinematography & Camera
Techniques
The camera techniques they have used are close ups at the
blood running down the chair and going down the drain
showing it’s a horror film, aerial shots they used this when
looking down in to the window of the barber shop from
above, extreme close up is when the meat is coming out of
the mincer, crane is used shows dark sky and looks down
into a window the window has fog on it it’s raining and the
lighting round the edges is dark so it shows something bad
is going to happen.
Visual Effects & Colour
Scheme For the visual effects on the opening scene when it’s raining
sometimes a drop of blood will fall down with the rain and
when looking down into a window the rain drops fall on to
it and also a drop of blood and this gives it the effect that
something bad’s going to happen and it’s going to involve a
lot of blood.
The colour scheme they use is very dark to give it a horror
and sinister feel to it giving you the feeling that something
bad is going to happen, they use dark and light blue for the
2. skies and black round the edges and at the bottom to give it
a dark shadow, they chimneys are grey and have dark
smoke coming out of them showing its set in an old time
because everything is dark, murky and dirty also they use
little drops of blood which adds a little colour and it makes
you look at the blood instead of the background and the
writing at the side.
Genre Conventions The blood stands out and it commonly used in horror films
and we follow the blood throughout the opening sequence.
The music is sinister starts off quiet and gets louder which
used often in horror films. Low key lighting is also used
throughout the opening scene giving it a gothic style the
stetting looks Victorian which gives it a scarier feel to it. The
weather (dark clouds, rain) adds a more scary effect
because it shows something bad is going to happen
sometime in the film many horror films will use the weather
to signal that a murder might take place and in this film bad
weather is used throughout because of the storyline.
3. Narrative Throughout the opening scene the audience see’s blood
which gives it the feel that something to do with murder
this is followed by a shot mincemeat and of a tray of pies
and this gives the impression that these are linked together.
We also see a picture of a silhouette of a woman which
could mean that she plays an important role in the film. At
the beginning we see blood running down a chair which
gives you the idea that something bad is going to happen in
the chair or round it.
Editing Techniques For editing techniques we slowly follow the blood
throughout all the shots, they follow the blood slowly
because it gives it a more scary feel instead of it being fast
which wouldn’t make it as scary and it gives the audience
an idea that there’s going to be a lot of blood in the film
and in some parts there is more blood than in others so
they know something bad is going to happen there. In a
scene where there’s mincemeat, pies and blood this also
gives the audience an idea that something’s going on with
the food because the meat doesn’t look very nice and the
blood could show that something’s not right with the meat
and it’s also set in a very gothic way which gives it the dark
and scary feel to it.
4. Title Credit Design For the title design they have used small white writing at
the side so people don’t see the writing because there too
busy looking at the background and you don’t really see the
writing unless you look for it also when you look at the
writing it looks nice, neat and tidy but if you look closely the
writing is different sizes and above or blow each other. On
the title falls down as blood and forms the name Sweeney
Todd with the small white mismatched letters underneath
this gives you the impression that bloods going to be falling
down the trap door also that things may look perfect and
neat but if you look closely you realise that it isn’t.
