This document defines and provides examples of various types of figurative language including metaphor, simile, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia, and idiom. Metaphors compare two things without using like or as, while similes directly compare two things using like or as. Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds and personification gives human qualities to non-human things. Onomatopoeia imitates natural sounds and idioms are phrases with meanings not determined by their literal definitions. Examples for each are given from internet sources and personal experiences.
