- 6. Khalil al Sayeghcaters to the Royal Family and affluent clientele in Dubai, with exquisite jewellery and custom-designed jewellery. Working with interior designers Wrenn Associates, the client wanted the locale to be bright and unique to showcase the opulence. The interior lent itself to featuring mouth-blown handmade murano glass chandeliers. The downlights used in the entire showroom have dark light reflectors that cut off spill light and highlight only the merchandise. Completed in 1998, it remains a masterpiece to this day. - 7. The national Indianheadquarters of EMC2 , a large American IT firm, was built in Bangalore in 2010. A first of its kind in the city, the architect wanted the space to be more than an office where computer programmes are developed, instead designed to be more as a bridge between EMC2 and their clients. A socially-responsible company, they wanted to achieve using the least resources and aimed for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certificate for the eight-storey offices. We divided the office into two categories, areas where people would be communicating, and areas where the primary purpose was for work. The variation of light in the areas of communication, rather than uniform light, helped the client to achieve a ‘lounge feeling’. This put the visitors and clients at ease. In the work areas, we used a mix of decorative and technical lights, adding darkness, shadows and contract and a variety of lamp temperature colours. - 8. In the opulentarea of Bangalore, Jeya Nagar, lies the 1000 m2 residence of a prominent businessman whose vision was to have his home built in a bold, alluring style. This 2013 project was made possible, with the help of a well-known architectural firm – with glass roofing, large doors and windows providing exceptional indoor-outdoor flow. “As lighting designers it was very important for us to develop the lighting scheme that translates the architect’s vision of indoor-outdoor feeling at night by shining lights into the space from above the large glass roof,” says fifth season design curator Venky Kannan. fifth season design sourced light fixtures from many renowned luminaire manufacturers – such as Glashutte Limburg, ERCO, Swarovski, Louis Poulsen and Vibia. - 9. Business travellers weregiven a new destination in Chennai, India, with the opening of the Hablis hotel in 2013. A large 11 metre by 4 metre chandelier adds grandeur to the lobby. All the lights were custom- designed and built, from all the luminaires in the 120 business rooms and suites, through to the ‘Irish Bar’ (the first of its kind in Chennai) and a stylish roof top restaurant. Providing the rightamount of light depending on the task performed, and according to the rules, and regulations, is only the first of many aspects that need to be considered whilst designing work place lighting. The right amount of light will help task performance but this light cannot be from a naked source. For comfortable working it is essential to have visual comfort; this means the source needs to be encapsulated in a body with optimum glare limitation. Whilst quantitative lighting design can achieve the above in any modern office, qualitative lighting design provides more… it helps to create an atmosphere in the office and it can express the corporate identity as well. In Palmerston North Design School, the exisitng lighting scheme has no variation in light levels resulting in wastage of light. All rooms have the same light scheme which is not in line with the nature of work that takes place within it. High power consumption is also an issue because the light fittings used have T8 fluorescent tubes that are not the latest in lamp technology. The lamps have a maximum life of 10,000 burning hours and not the best lumen efficacy. The magnetic ballast that powers these lamps result in further power loss as compaired to electronic drivers used to power newer lamp technologies like the T5 or LED. This called for an energy audit, to determine the areas of improvement and implement a new lighting scheme that can benefit the client in the short and long term. - 11. DesignIntentforthenewschemeResult The first andforemost requirement is to change the light fittings and arrange them in the best possible fashion to provide an optimal lighting solution. Secondly to bring out the spirit of the institution by lighting up the space differently, keeping in mind the high light levels required in the space along with good colour rendering index of the lamp, that bring out the true colours as seen under natural light. To achieve the desired result, light fittings using modern LED technology have been chosen. The lighting levels have been chosen depending on the activities within the space. Areas like the reception and the director’s room, which showcase the brand, have higher accent factor. This means using darkness and shadows along with vertical illumination within the space. On the contrary, areas like the design studio have been uniformly illuminated with the required light levels. Products – All lamps used in the proposed lighting scheme are LED. They have a life of 50,000 burning hours with a high CRI index and lumen efficacy, all of which are higher than the fluorescent and halogen lamps currently in use. Light levels – Achieved appropriate light levels in all the areas, reduced in some and increased in others according to the tasks performed and according to building norms. Branding – A mix of shadows and contrast in the reception, lounge, director’s office and façade help project the right image and brand of the school. Long-term savings – The power consumption of the existing lighting system is about 9kw/hour. The proposed lighting scheme consumes only 3kw/hour of power. With a vision to be more accessible to the larger Palmerson North community, that class was shifted to Queen Elizabeth College in 2010. It has since built a strong reputation based on its successful projects and commitment to community learning. Passionart became an incorporated society in 2011. In July 2013 with aligned goals in the areas of creativity in community and providing opportunities for legitimate urban art, Passionart became contracted to the Palmerston North City Council as part of the ‘Fee For Service Scheme’. In October 2013 Passionart partnered with Te Manawa, Museum of Art Science and History and is now based in the museum and regularly uses the facilities to provide venues for classes, projects and events. Passionart is structured around a board and an operational management. Neil Wallace With similar vision, fifth season design has partnered with Passionart as one of its patrons.
