Flooding is a recurring issue in Jammu and Kashmir, India that has recently been exacerbated by climate change. In March 2015, the region experienced its worst flooding since 1959 as heavy rains caused the Jhelum River to overflow. At least 16 people died in landslides caused by the flooding. Flood waters can spread water-borne illnesses to vulnerable communities if sewage and water systems are damaged. Local communities need updated infrastructure and disaster response plans to better protect against future flooding events.
