- 5. What is PERSONAL ESSAY? - can also be an opinion piece, an opinion that is based on a particular political or social concern or topic of interest. In this type of personal essay, the writer can state the problem, provide solutions, and then write a conclusion—which must state an important point
- 6. A personal essay has the following ELEMENTS •It is based on a personal experience in which you have gained significant meaning, insight, or learned a lesson. •It is personal narrative. The writer tells the story by including dialogue, imagery, characterization, conflict, plot, and setting.
- 7. A personal essay has the following ELEMENTS •It is written in the first person. (“I” point-of-view) •It is an autobiographical story in which the writer describes an incident that resulted in some personal growth or development.
- 8. CENTRAL THEME This is the main point or idea behind the narrative. The narrative may be about a unique event, but the theme is a universal truth to which anyone can relate that informs the narrative.
- 9. An epiphany is a moment of sudden realization or awareness of the truth. An “aha!” moment in the essay. A personal narrative may contain multiple epiphanies in varying degrees. EPIPHANY
- 10. SUSPENSE Try to write in a way that keeps your reader wanting to know what will happen next. If your readers already know how everything is going to turn out in the first paragraph, why should they continue?
- 11. CLIMAX As with fiction, a personal narrative works towards a climactic event, a turning point, or moment of action to which the narrative builds.
- 12. SELF-HONESTY Effective personal essays will reveal moments of vulnerability or weakness. Remember you’re in charge of how much you reveal, and you should not violate another person’s privacy by revealing sensitive information about him or her
- 13. DESCRIPTION Create the sensory images and emotions of your experience so that your reader knows what you saw, felt, and thought. Staying rooted in concrete detail is the best way to accomplish this.
- 14. CHRONOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION The organization is chronological, with events occurring in a particular sequence.
- 15. The people in your narrative, especially yourself, need to come alive and seem like real and interesting people. Not every person who shows up in your narrative will require characterization. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

- An autobiographical essay that relates a significant personal experience of the essay writer. A personal narrative is a story about your own experience. It can be about a place you have visited, things you have seen or done, or funny things that have happened to you.
- It can also be based on a milestone or life-altering event.
- The central idea is the central, unifying element of the story, which ties together all of the other elements of fiction used by the author to tell the story. The central idea can be best described as the dominant impression or the universal, generic truth found in the story. For example, a story might describe a basketball team that works together to beat a team of more talented players that do not work well together. The reader can infer the central idea: hard work and togetherness are more important than sheer talent. Looking at key details can help you determine the central idea.
- An epiphany in a story is any moment when a character has a moment of realization. Typically, this term is reserved for significant moments of revelation whereby a character undergoes personal development or experiences a moment of transcendence. Authors often use epiphany as a tool to shift the plot of a story. At her son's yearly check-up, the doctors notes that he is at an unhealthy weight and at risk for childhood diabetes. It is this moment that that woman realizes she must make a change in order to preserve her children's health. In this everyday situation, the woman has an epiphany. a character comes to understand their first impression about another character was incorrect after reading a tell-all letter.
- A feeling that a reader gets when they don't know what is going to happen next. A writer creates suspense through a controlled release of information to readers that raises key questions and makes readers eager, but terrified, to find out what happens.
- This is the highest point of tension in an essay. In literary terms, the definition of climax is the highest point of tension in a storyline, often depicted by a confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist. A climax resolves the main conflict of the story and is the moment the main character reaches—or fails to reach—their goal.
- - Honesty is key, even if that honesty is revealing or a little hard to admit. Honesty is important in writing because it makes your words more believable. When you write with honesty, your readers know that you're not trying to deceive them or mislead them in any way. They can trust what you say, and they'll be more likely to take your advice or recommendations seriously.

Capturing an event through descriptive writing involves paying close attention to the details by using all of your five senses. The different shades of the green stems and leaves were the perfect backdrops to the yellow, orange, and red petals that seemed to sway softly with the breeze.
- Chronological order is listing, describing, or discussing when events happened as they relate to time. Basically, it is like looking at a timeline to view what occurred first and what happened after that. This means that the events in a story happen in order from beginning to end. Writing in chronological order helps the reader follow what is happening in a story. For example, if a student wants to prepare for an exam, she will first go to class, then study, and finally, take the exam.
- How the reader can observe the character changing step by step throughout the narrative. They can identify development by noticing how the character’s traits change as the story progresses. The plot in the narrative plays a key role in character development. Remember a well-developed character needs real and recognizable traits. You’ll want to know some stan-out details about their personalities, their mannerisms, Their hopes and fears, their likes, dislikes, appearance and backstory.
