The Ten House fire station was located directly at Ground Zero. On September 11th, 2001, the firefighters at the Ten House were starting their morning shift when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower. Ladder 10 was the first unit to respond and encountered debris and injured civilians on the way. Once on scene, the firefighters helped evacuate hundreds from the lobby. After the South Tower was hit, the firefighters knew this was a terrorist attack. When the towers collapsed, firefighter John Morabito was thrown around but survived. In total, 343 firefighters and many civilians and police officers died in the 9/11 attacks.
