The E-Rate program provides discounts on telecommunications, internet access, and networking equipment to schools and libraries with funding from the Universal Service Fund. Discounts range from 20-90% based on the poverty level of the students served. Eligible schools and libraries work with the Universal Service Administrative Company to request competitive bids from vendors, select services, and apply for E-Rate funding reimbursement. The annual funding cap was recently increased to over $4 billion to help more educational institutions gain affordable access to broadband and online educational resources.
