Cable television's Learning Channel publicizes the wholesome facade of family through the Duggar Family's "19 Kids and Counting" show, but few viewers understand the dark underbelly of their formulaic, high demand ideology. Considering this reality show family as a prototype and their deep roots in the Independent Baptist movement, this presentation will delve into the variety of extreme measures used to enforce their panacea of a mythical family ideal.
With a special focus on corporal punishment and the incarceration of children in "troubled teen industry" homes, two Second Generation Adult survivors of this system will recount their experiences within this religious movement. This presentation specifically endeavors to highlight the unique recovery needs of those who have endured the profound trauma of the Baptist residential teen home experience. Janet Heimlich will explore the challenges of addressing and preventing this variety of Religious Child Maltreatment.

The Restoration Center is a Christian based non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for woman previously incarcerated. Our goal is to provide participants with temporary living accommodations, along with spiritual and behavioral training. Participants will also learn how to deal with sexual abuse, anger, parenting skills, addictions, career training, and more. The women will receive nine months of life skills instruction including educational and vocational guidance, with an emphasis on instilling Biblical principles while at the Center.

The Nueva Latina continues to maintain characteristics common to the unacculturated, traditional Latina, like being emotional, instinctive and family oriented. But this time, she sees her success not through the accomplishments of others, but rather through her own personal achievements. The Nueva Latina not only is the main decision maker for most CPG products, she is also a primary decision maker or a strong influential within insurance, banking, and even the auto categories among others.
