The Missouri Career Development Association (MoCDA) was awarded the National Career Development Association's (NCDA) Outstanding State Division Award for 2015. The award recognized MoCDA's innovative programming and leadership, including hosting webinars, conferences, and collaborating with other organizations. Chandra Johnson and Marcie Schumert accepted the award on behalf of MoCDA from NCDA President Mark Danaher. The newsletter provided updates on MoCDA events and opportunities for involvement with NCDA.

1. The Missouri Career Development Association was presented the NCDA
Outstanding State Division Award from National Career Development
Association President Elect Cynthia Marco-Scanlon. The award was
presented on July 1st in Denver, Colorado, at the NCDA Global Conference.
This award honors state divisions who have exhibited innovative program-
ming and leadership during 2015.
“Missouri had a very active year by hosting three webinars including one
on National Career Development Day. They also hosted a 2014 Summer
Conference Recap discussion workshop to share topics learned at the
NCDA and other industry conferences. Missouri also hosted an Exposition
Day, in collaboration with the MO Counseling Association Conference last
April. Many of their members got involved with NCDA events and leader-
ship activities and we commend them on their state-wide influence.”
The NCDA Outstanding State Division award was accepted by Chandra
Johnson, MoCDA President, and Marcie Schumert, MoCDA Past-President
(pictured below with NCDA President, Mark Danaher).

MOCDA NEWSLETTER
Polly Matteson is the Assistant Director/Employer Relations Coordinator for the Truman State
University Career Center in Kirksville, MO, and Board Secretary for MoCDA.
As a member of a 3-person professional staff for our centralized career center (serving around
6,000 students), each of us works closely with students with
career and decision-making. In addition to working daily
with students, I work with employers to develop recruiting
relationships and coordinating on-campus recruiting.
Before working in the Career Center, I taught high school for
a bit before serving as a flight attendant for TWA. I also
recruited, developed curriculum, and trained flight attend-
ants which is phenomenal with my Masters in Education-
Curriculum & Instruction! After American and TWA merged,
the TWA flight attendants were furloughed and I was able to
use those transferable skills to work with college students--
and I love it!
My strengths are Developer, Empathy, Positivity, Activator,
and Relator.
Why am I involved with MoCDA? I love the friendships and
collaborative opportunities that this group has provided.
Interested in Getting Your Career Development Facilitator Certification?
MoCDA needs your input! We’re considering bringing in a Facilitator to do
the training in Columbia, MO this spring or summer. This is an excellent
certification to ensure you are skilled in the 12 competencies identified by
NCDA as pertinent to our field of career counseling, including (but not limited
to) Assessment, Ethical and Legal Issues, Technology, Program Management,
Helping Skills, and Employability Skills.
The training itself is an 8-12 week commitment and the instructor does 3 full
days face to face with the rest of the session being completed online. The
cost for the training is around $1100 (around $1000 for the training and an
additional $100 for the book).

MoCDA hosted a roundtable discussion in August at St. Charles Community College
where members could learn about the conference sessions that other MoCDA
members attended. There were eight members who were able to attend and three
topics covered: solution-focused brief therapy and transition theory, Applicant Tracking
Systems, utilizing peers in career services offices and online resources to use with our
clients. As with most roundtables, our conversation diverged to include connecting
with employers and how offices handle online resume reviews in databases. Thanks to
our presenters: Jennifer Pickerell, Meg Langland, Maureen Bernath, and Chandra
Johnson!

Poetry and Poster Contest
NCDA promotes career development through its annual celebration of National
Career Development Month. Every November, career development professionals are
encouraged to celebrate with career related activities. In particular, NCDA sponsors
an annual Poetry and Poster Contest. This year, National Career Development week is
November 16-20 and National Career Development Day is November 18, 2015.
This year’s Poetry and Poster Contest theme is “Fostering well-being through mean-
ingful work.” Submissions are due on November 14, 2015. Winners will be announced
on the NCDA website in April. For more information, check out:
