FALL 2014 CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS & BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR
ANALYSIS
OBJECTIVES___________________________________________________________________________________________________
The objectiveof this report is to provide an analysis of information gathered concerning both
Campus Conversations and Behind the Scenes Tours created by Career Services. This report is
intended to:
 Determine whether students have found these campus sponsored events helpful in the
pursuit of an internship
 Trackstudents’ pursuit towards internships after participation with the event
 Tracking overall student experience withCampus Conversations and Behind the Scenes
Tours
SURVEYMETHODOLOGY____________________________________________________________________________________
Information gathered was done so through both immediate post event surveys and follow up
surveys that had been sent a few months after the event had passed. A preliminary survey occurred
after a student had attended the Behind the Scenes tour and was given immediately after the event
had finished. This survey included questions such as:
 Knowledge of the organization before and after the event
 Open response questions concerning what students had wanted to learn about the
organization versus what they had learned after touring the organization
 If students wouldrecommend the event, and why
The follow up survey was sent out a few months after these invents had concluded. This survey
included questions such as:
 Whichevent the student had attended
 How a student would rate the event attended
 If a student wouldrecommend the event to a friend
 Rating the organization of the event
 How was the event helpful
 If the student followedup with any of the event speakers and how
 If a student did not follow up withthe speakers, did they follow up withanother company
 If an internship was pursued after the event, where they were in the process of pursuing the
internship, and who the internship couldpotentially be with.
From the follow up survey,a reminder survey was sent out in order to obtain as much responses as
possible.
Additionally, it should be noted that forthe Behind the Scenes tour forSTEM, a legitimate
immediate post survey method was not developed and therefore emails have sufficedto fulfillsaid
requirement. Emails were then interpreted to fill out surveys on behalf of the student.
RESULTS_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

VALUE
What did studentsvaluemost?
There are twooverarching themes in the explanations given by students on the most valuable
aspect of attending the events. These themes are: having the opportunity to network with potential
employers, and learning about the responsibilities of professionals workingin the industry.
Based on what student’s found valuable from these events to discover whattheir future could
possibly look like. Most students valued speaking to these professionals in order to find out if their
responsibilities fit their interests, helping to guide them towards career choicesthat wouldbetter
fit their personalities. Students also found valuable that speakers were SDSU alumni, especially if
these speakers are recent graduates; finding it easier to connect with those speakers. One of the
questions respondents were asked concerned why students had attended the event. The primary
response for applicants (32 respondents, 84.21%) is that they wanted to gain a better
understanding of the responsibilities of a professional in their field.
“Itwas a greatopportunityto learnhowa day onstemcareer wouldbe frompeoplewho are
experienced.Lovedtheirinnovativegallerythatgaveinsights to get a perspectiveofcompany

- MarkelFarley,Senior (STEM)
Students also valued the opportunity to network with these employers forpotential future
positions. The second overarching theme of networking was also the second highest response
when students were asked why they attended the event (25 respondents, 65.79%). Based on the
grade level demographics, a majority of those who attended a Campus Conversation Event or a
Behind the Scenes Tour was a senior who has either graduated in December 2014 or is graduating
in May of 2015 (45 seniors, 36%). It can be inferred that these seniors attended these events in
order to network themselves to potential employers once they’vereceived their diplomas. It is
more likely that juniors (30 juniors, 24%) whoattended the event are more likely to have attended
in the pursuit of gaining an internship with one of the companies present forthe events.
When surveyedwhatstudentsvaluedmost…
“Hearingabouthowpeoplewithdifferentvalues can still work together, andthechance to practice

What did studentsvalueleast?
Although a majority of respondents concluded that they had no negative comments to say in terms
of value (16 respondents, 42.11%) of the Campus Conversations and Behind the Scenes Events,
general themes were recognized in responses. The twothemes that students had suggestions for
included issues with time and the recommendation for more diversity in the speakers at the event.
Time constraint and schedule conflictsis what most student respondents had labeled as the aspect
of the event least valued. It was made clear that some students whowanted to attend both Campus
Conversations as wellthe Behind the Scenes Tour were not able to because of scheduling issues,
either due to class, work,or other priorities. Students also commented on the limited time available
to speak to employers during the events.
Another theme that students suggested was the need formore diversity in companies. Students,
particularly those who attended events related to Non-Profitsrequested more diversity in
companies.
When surveyedwhatstudentsvaluedleast…

CONCLUSION__________________________________________________________________________________________________
In conclusion, the overall reactions to the Campus Conversations and Behind the Scenes Tour
events have been found helpful in aiding students towards not only the pursuit of obtaining an
internship but also towards gaining a better understanding in what a career with their major
entails. The process has allowed students to gain better insight on the responsibilities of a
professional and how a typical workday wouldlook like. Students also appreciated the opportunity
to networkand speak with professionals whoare either recent graduates or SDSU alumni.

The second overarching theme of networking was also the second highest response when students were asked why they attended the event (25 respondents, 65.79%). Based on the grade level demographics, a majority of those who attended a Campus Conversation Event or a Behind the Scenes Tour was a senior who has either graduated in December 2014 or is graduating in May of 2015 (45 seniors, 36%). It can be inferred that these seniors attended these events in order to network themselves to potential employers once they’vereceived their diplomas.
