Morris Fountain responds to Robyn Schwartz about ideas for faith communities to address homelessness prevention. He suggests that faith communities support the strategic plan of the Alliance of Community Assistance Ministries to expand services. He also proposes that faith groups provide assistance to families experiencing homelessness due to a parent's arrest to prevent them from becoming homeless. Finally, he expresses interest in his organization becoming a member of the Christian Community Service Center to directly provide homelessness prevention assistance.

Slides from presentation by David Vanderveen, Executive Director of Hope Ministries, with voiceover by Pastor Clark. We review causes of homelessness in our local community, the work Hope is doing in partnership with local government and other shelters, and how St. Peter can join that partnership in service to our neighbors. Please watch and get in touch!
This is the letter that was sent by pastors asking President Obama to make a religious exception in the law concerning the hiring of LGBT individuals by religious organizations. Under current plans, President Obama would require religious organizations to hire members of the LGBT community in order to compete for dollars which have traditionally been delivered to religious organizations to help them serve the community and public. Will Obama respond favorably? Or will he simply impose his views without regard to closely held religious practices? We will see.

Hi Morris,
Thanks very much for sharing your thoughts and ACAM’s strategic plan. All of your ideas are
wonderful—that criminal justice piece especially. We are still in the process of working out exactly what
the next steps will be in convening faith groups and working toward implementing everyone’s fantastic
ideas, but we will surely keep you updated!
All best,
Robyn

Hi Robyn,
I lost track of this. These are my thoughts in order:
1. Our faith community, through the Community Assistance Ministries, is our first defense for
Homelessness Prevention. Attached is the Alliance of Community Assistance Ministries 2010 –
2013 Strategic Plan. The Faith Community should be called upon to support the ACAM Strategic
Goal 5) Increase the service area of membership by reaching out to underserved parts of
Greater Houston, raising the profile of CAMs as service hubs in their communities and raising
awareness around the issues affecting the people served by the CAMs.
Closer to home, I would love to see St. John’s Downtown UMC become the 43 member of the
Christian Community Service Center. And I would love to see funding for Bread of Life in our
Assistance Program role where we could be proactive for Homelessness Prevention to make a
small assistance pledge before referring clients to Christian Community Service Center.
2. Our faith community could embrace the families in our underserved parts of Greater Houston at
the critical time of the arrest of a family member, especially the arrest of wage earner parent to
dependent children. In cooperation with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Jail Chaplaincy, the
Faith Community could truly be a blessing. This too addresses Homelessness Prevention. In this
situation, it is all too common for the offender’s family to lose housing and move in with other
family – that is they become homeless and uncounted.

Keynote speaker Pastor Rudy Rasmus of St. John's United Methodist Church
Dear Leaders,
Thank you for attending the Coalition for the Homeless's Faith Breakfast on April 12 and expressing
an interest in receiving communications from us and/or serving in a volunteer capacity.
We are eager to hear your ideas about how the region's faith community can partner with each
other as well as collaborate with the broad system of public and private homeless service providers
in innovative ways. Please send your comments to RSchwartz@homelesshouston.org.
As we all coalesce around a vision for communicating about and integrating our efforts concerning
homeless service provision and advocacy, we expect to provide all interested parties with regular
updates via these e-newsletters. Please encourage any colleagues or lay leaders/parishioners who
were unable to join us on April 12 to sign up for our alerts and participate in future activities. They
can also view slides from the presentations given by the Coalition's President/CEO Connie S.
Boyd and the Executive Director of St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities, Dr. Patricia Gail Bray.
Thank you again for all of your efforts on behalf of people experiencing homelessness who live in
our midst. Collaboration is the key to finding permanent solutions that will help our vulnerable
neighbors exit homelessness and re-enter our community with the supports and tools they need to
be safe, self-sufficient, and successful.
Warmest wishes,
Connie Boyd
