A king had three daughters who were kidnapped by a dragon. The king offered his daughters' hands in marriage and riches to whoever could rescue them. Three men - a soldier, Frolka, and Erema - accepted the challenge. Frolka used his bravery and tobacco to help them overcome obstacles like two-headed and four-headed dragons guarding the princesses. He singlehandedly defeated the dragons. With the help of an old man, Frolka also defeated a five-headed dragon and rescued the last princess. All three princesses were returned to their happy father, who rewarded the heroes by giving them his daughters in marriage.

*Children's Art From the "Land of the Firebird"*
This collection of artworks by Russian children, ages 5-15, was inspired by their national fairy tales and folk tales. The forest animals and 'tricksters' that live across the pages of their folk tales add vitality, inventiveness and humor to their art. The ubiquitous "Clever Fox" in Russian tales is a stand-in for "Br'er Fox" in American stories like "Tales of Uncle Remus". The stories and legends carry children off to a magic world with real life situations that usually turn out well: evil is punished and good deeds are rewarded. The folk tales and legends of all cultures are bound together by common threads of morality and values that are passed through the generations to children all over the world.
These artworks have been exhibited in over 50 locations in New York and beyond - public libraries, schools, children's hospitals, city halls and art museums. Over 300 artworks in the collection were sold at silent auctions, beginning in 1993, and proceeds were returned to their schools in Russia. American children also have sent artworks to Russia since mid-1900s. A large collection of these works is stored in Moscow.
6. One day the king's daughters stayed too long in the garden, they
were admiring the flowers. Suddenly the dragon appeared from
nowhere and carried them off in his fiery wings.
8. So the King sent maids to look for them in the garden
9. But it was all in vain. Maids did not find princesses.
10. In the morning the King raised the alarm. A lot of people came to the
King. Then the King said: "If someone find my daughters, I will give
plenty of money and any of my daughters will marry the Hero".
11. There were three volunteers:
the Soldier, a couch-potato Frolka and Erema.
12. So they agreed with the
King and set off to look for
princesses.
18. So Frolka pushed the Soldier and Eremu and said: "Let me,
boys!" He sniffed tobacco and knocked on the door so hard that
broken them.
19. Then they came into the yard and sat down in a circle. They
were going to snatch a quick bite what God has sent.
20. A beautiful girl came out of the house. She said: "Why
do you, my friends, come here? Here live horrible
dragon, he will eat you! Blessed you are, he is absent
now".
21. Frolka told her: "We'll eat it ourselves!" He had just said
these words, so the Dragon flew. The Dragon roared:
"Who is my kingdom destroyed? Could I have enemies? I
have one opponent, but even crow has not brought his
bones here!"
22. "Crow has not brought me" - said Frolka. "But a good horse has
brought». Hearing these words, the Dragon said: "Peace or war?"
Frolka answered: "I have come here for fighting, not for peace!"
23. So they began a battle. Frolka cut off both heads of the
Dragon from one stab. Then he picked up them and put
under a stone, and the body buried in the ground.
24. The girl was happy and said these fellows: "Take me, my
friends, with you." They asked her: "Whose do you are?" She
answered that she is the king's daughter - the Princess.
25. Princess called them into the mansion, fed and watered. Then she asked
them to help other sisters. Frolka replied: "Yes, we were sent for this!"
26. Princess told them where her sisters were. "My younger sisters have even
worse problems. They live with the four-headed dragon and the five-headed
dragon." - "Don't worry!" - said Frolka. "We will cope with them too. I could
have problem with only five-headed dragon." They said goodbye and went
further.
27. So they came to the middle
sister. The castle where she
was imprisoned was huge.
There was high fence from cast
iron around the castle. They
came and started looking for
the gates. When they found
them, Frolka thumped at the
gate and the gate opened.
28. They came into the yard and decided to have a bite. Suddenly, four-headed
dragon came flying. "Something smells Russian spirit!" - he says. "Bah! It's
you, Frolka, came here. Why?"
29. "I know why!" - replied Frolka. He fought with the Dragon and knocked all
his four heads from one stab. Then he put them under a rock and the body
buried in the ground.
30. Then they got into the castle. One room has been passed, the
other...
31. In the fourth room they
saw the princess. She
were sitting on the
couch. As they told her,
how and why they
came here, she was
very happy.
32. She started to entertain
them. Then she asked to
help her younger sister
and save her from five-
headed dragon. Frolka
said: "Of course! We we
were sent for this! Just
heart is timid a little bit.
Well, maybe god will help
us! Please, brought us one
more glass“.
33. So they drank and walked further. They walked and
walked and came to a steep ravine. On the other
side of the ravine, there were huge pillars instead of
the gate. And two terrible lion were chained to them.
34. They roared so loudly that Frolka was only who stay
on his feet. His companions fell on the ground from
fear. Then Frolka told them: "I have seen more
horror and even than was not afraid. Follow me!"
36. Suddenly, an old man came out of the
hut. He saw them, came closer and
said: "Where are you going, my dears?"
-"Well, we are going to the castle" -
answered Frolka.
37. - Oh, my dears! You are going not
for good. In this castle lives the
five-headed dragon. Now he's not
home, otherwise he would eat you
now.
- But we are looking for him.
- If so, - said the old man - then go.
I'll help you to get there.
The old man came to the lions and
began to stroke them. Meanwhile,
Frolka with his comrades made
their way in the yard.
38. So they went up to the castle and the old man led them to the
room where the princess lived.
39. When she saw them, she quickly jumped out of bed and
came closer and questioned them: "Who they are and why
they came?" They told her. First the Princess entertained
them, and then she packed up her things.
40. They have got out of the castle
and suddenly saw that the dragon
was flying in a less than a mile
from them.
41. So the princess threw herself back
into the castle, then Frolka with
friends went to meet the Dragon
and fight with him.
42. First the Dragon very quickly attacked
them. But Frolka was a prompt guy!
He managed to win..
43. He cut off all his five heads and
threw them into the ravine.
44. Then they went back to the castle and had a spree than
ever.
45. And then they hit the road and went for the others
princesses and collectively arrived home.
