Factories Act 1948
Introduction
● In India the first Factories Act was passed in 1881 Applicable to 100
workers.
● In 1891 another factories Act was passed extended to the factories
employing 50 or more workers.
What is a factory
A premises whereon 10 or more persons are engaged if power is used, or 20 or
more persons are engaged if power is not used, in a manufacturing process.
Objective of the Act
● The Act has been enacted primarily with the object of protection workers
employed in factories against industrial and occupational hazards.
● For the purpose, it seeks to impose upon the owner or the occupier certain
obligations to protect the workers and to secure for them employment in
conditions conductive to their health and safety.
Working hours
According to the provision of working hours of adults, a worker cannot be
allowed to work in a factory for more than 48 hours in a week.A weekly holiday
is mandatory.
Health
In order to project the health of workers, factories Act 1948 has laid down the
rules that every factory must be kept neat & clean and all necessary precaution
should be taken in this regard. The factories should have adequate lighting,
drainage system, temperature, ventilation etc.
