RATIONALE:
Afghanistan - devastated by three decades of war, unrest and poverty. There is a constant
threat to life and well-being because of political and economic instability. The future of Afghan
youth looms largely due to lack of equal educational opportunities and widespread poverty, Afghan
youth’s right to employability continues to be just on paper.
There are about 823,000* Afghan youth unemployed and about 400,000 are added each year
to those numbers, who are waiting to be employed. But many of them are not job-ready as they
lack skills required by the industry.
The need of the hour is to make Afghan youth employable, and equip them with needed
vocational skills which will make them employable.

2. Testimonial from the HOPE community Centre:
“Many painful stories could have a happy ending”
Zai Ahmad and his ten siblings used to help their father in his
farm in their home province of Logar. Their father understood the need
for education so ensured his children went to school. But due to the
continuous conflict and insecurity in the area they lived, they made the
tough decision to move to the (relative) safety of Kabul. It was painful
for them to leave their home, their friends and their livelihood and
move to strange and daunting place. But there was one blessing. The
older children could enter higher education, something not available in
Logar, and Zai, earned himself a place at Kabul University to study for
a Bachelor of Business Administration.
Determined to succeed in order to help support his family, Zai found and joined the HOPE
community center to learn English language and computer skills. There are commercial
organisations offering this in Kabul but there is no way Zai could have afforded to attend one.
With the skills Zai learnt at the HOPE community center, Zai was recently accepted as a
teacher in a local school. The US$92 / GB£60 he earns each month enables him to start
supporting his family while he continues his studies.
Zai continually expresses his gratitude for the HOPE community center for providing him
with the necessary skills to enable him to help his family while helping the children of Kabul,
and to do so while studying for a career that he hopes will give him the tools to help many
others. Reflecting on his life to date and his prospects for the future Zai stated,
“every successful person has a painful story but every painful story can have a
successful ending”.
