PCR is able to pick a single gene from a complex genome and amplify it by using short DNA sequences called primers that are complementary to the target gene. The primers allow the DNA polymerase enzyme to recognize and copy only the target gene during repeated heating and cooling cycles. This process of thermal cycling allows the target gene to be amplified exponentially until there are enough copies to analyze.
