This document describes a webtask designed for a technical English course for chemical engineering students. The goal was to develop students' reading comprehension and familiarize them with the discourse practices of their field. Students were asked to write a recommendation report on an environmental issue. They used online resources like the EPA website to research the issue and collaboratively find solutions. The webtask integrated genre and task-based approaches to help students develop the communicative competences needed for their future workplace.

O objetivo do trabalho foi relatar uma experiência de aprendizagem de Inglês como Língua Estrangeira (EFL), no contexto de uma escola pública do sul do Brasil, através da produção de textos em blogs e estratégias transmídia. O ensino de línguas mediado tecnologicamente pode ser uma forma de encorajar rupturas paradigmáticas e promover avanços que qualificam a educação, permitindo também uma visão crítica a respeito dos usos da tecnologia. A concepção de linguagem como prática sócio-historicamente situada em meio a mundos de significados construídos no discurso está ganhando terreno em estudos linguísticos, também podendo orientar a reflexão sobre a cultura digital e sobre os efeitos de sentido gerados a partir de práticas de linguagem desenvolvidas neste ambiente.

This literature review was written as part of the C-SAP (Higher Education Academy's Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics) project "Discovering Collections of Social Science Open Educational Resources". The project ran from August 2010 - August 2011 as part of Phase 2 of the HEFCE-funded Open Educational Resources (OER) programme. The programme focused in particular on issues related to the discovery and use of OER by academics and was managed jointly by the Higher Education Academy [HEA] and Joint Information Systems Committee [JISC].

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
