One Who OnlyGives: Divine Qualities and Modern
Spirituality Through the Sahaj Marg
Introduction: The Path to Divinity in Modern Times
In our fast-paced modern world, where material pursuits often overshadow spiritual growth,
there exists a simpler, more natural path to self-realization - one that was championed by a
humble spiritual master from Shahjahanpur, India. Revered Babuji Maharaj (Shri Ram Chandra
of Shahjahanpur) embodied the essence of what it means to be truly divine while living in the
material world. His approach to spirituality, known as Sahaj Marg or the Natural Path, offers a
practical roadmap for modern individuals seeking to discover their inner divinity without
abandoning their worldly responsibilities.
What makes his teachings particularly relevant today is their focus on simplicity, balance, and
the integration of spiritual practice into everyday life. Rather than promoting renunciation,
Babuji Maharaj taught that true spirituality flourishes alongside material existence - like two
wings of a bird working in harmony to achieve flight toward the ultimate goal of human
existence: merging with the Divine.
Through personal encounters with this remarkable spiritual guide, we discover how the qualities
of saintliness, selfless giving, and divine love can transform ordinary human existence into an
extraordinary journey of self-realization. His methods provide a blueprint for spirituality in the
modern world - a practical approach for those seeking to balance material needs with spiritual
aspirations.
The Divine Human: The Life and Teachings of Babuji Maharaj
Born on April 30, 1899, in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, Ram Chandra (affectionately
known as Babuji) displayed an unusual craving for spiritual realization from an early age.
Despite his profound spiritual inclinations, he lived an outwardly ordinary life, working as a
clerk in the district court for over thirty years while raising a family of six children with his wife,
Bhagwati Heartfulness.
His spiritual journey took a significant turn when, at the age of 22, he met his guru, Lalaji (Ram
Chandra of Fatehgarh), who recognized him as his spiritual successor. Though they met only a
few times before Lalaji's passing in 1931, their connection transcended physical meetings, with
Babuji maintaining that he could not live even a second without his master's inner guidance.

What made BabujiMaharaj extraordinary was not his outward appearance or lifestyle but his
inner qualities and spiritual attainments. He exemplified what it means to embody divine
qualities as a human being. Through his humility, selflessness, and dedication to serving others,
he demonstrated the highest potential of human existence - to become a channel for divinity
while living in the material world.
Babuji believed that spirituality is the birthright of all beings and should be freely accessible to
sincere seekers regardless of their background. This belief led him to simplify and refine the
ancient system of Raja Yoga, removing unnecessary rituals and practices while preserving its
spiritual essence. The result was Sahaj Marg - the Natural Path - a spiritual method uniquely
suited to modern life and designed to help practitioners achieve self-realization while fulfilling
their worldly duties Sahaj Marg.
Sahaj Marg: A Spiritual Method for Modern Times
The Natural Path, or Sahaj Marg, represents a revolutionary approach to spirituality that
addresses the unique challenges faced by modern seekers. Unlike traditional paths that often
require withdrawal from worldly affairs, Sahaj Marg is specifically designed for householders -
those who must balance family responsibilities, career demands, and spiritual aspirations.
At its core, this spiritual method comprises four essential practices:
1. Morning Meditation: A simple practice of meditating on the divine light in the heart,
without mantras or complex visualizations. This heart-centered approach helps establish a
direct connection with the divine presence within.
2. Evening Cleaning: A unique technique to remove the accumulated impressions and
emotions of the day, clearing the heart of negative influences and restoring inner balance.
3. Bedtime Prayer: A special prayer that fosters an attitude of surrender and reinforces the
spiritual connection before sleep.
4. Constant Remembrance: The practice of maintaining awareness of the divine presence
throughout daily activities, gradually transforming ordinary actions into spiritual practice
Sahaj Marg.
What makes Sahaj Marg particularly effective for modern practitioners is its emphasis on direct
experience rather than blind belief. As the tradition teaches, "Sahaj Marg asks us not to believe,
but to observe; not to trust, but to test." This empirical approach resonates with the contemporary
mindset while offering practical tools for inner transformation.
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this spiritual method is the transmission of spiritual
energy (pranahuti) - a subtle yet powerful force that accelerates spiritual progress. Through this
transmission, offered by trained preceptors in the Heartfulness tradition, practitioners receive
direct assistance in their inner journey, making the path to self-realization more accessible and
efficient.

One Who OnlyGives: Encounters with a Living Saint
[Note: Here begins the content from the original article, preserved as requested]
I met Babuji for the first time in 1978. That is about forty-five years ago. That is a long time!
During these years I met him many times. I wrote down many of our meetings, our dialogues,
my visions of him, but I never felt like turning it into a book. My stories tell more about myself
than about him. That was fine. I am not claiming to know him. I only can speak from my own
experience, my angle.
The first time I met him in Shahjahanpur, his house, I was amazed by what I saw.
In front of me, I saw a humble, simple, and seemingly insignificant being. But during our
meeting, his head became transparent, and I could see planets moving inside it. I was gazing, like
through a window, into the unlimited universe itself. While I could experience this, I also saw a
human being with a white beard, joking, speaking and looking at me.
At my next visit, a year later, I saw his head like an open bowl in which there was nothing. It was
simply an open bowl, empty, receiving everything and giving everything.
Babuji's teachings on love, grace, passion, sin, and saintliness offer profound insights into the
nature of divine qualities in humans:
On being asked what love is, he replied, "Love is a bloom of a flower that perishes soon."
Thinking that he had not heard my question correctly, I repeated, "What is love?"
He responded, "Love is craving for Reality. Opening yourself to Reality and Divinity is love."
When asked about grace, he defined it simply as "sweetness of mind."
For passion, he initially joked, "Excitement in fashion," but then reconsidered.
When questioned about sin, he explained it as "improper adjustment of things."
Finally, when I asked him what saintliness is, he answered, "One who only gives and never asks
for anything in return."
During another visit, I shared my respect for someone known for his divine intoxication. Babuji
responded with a twinkle in his eye, "Well, I may not say anything against it, since I myself am a
smoker!"
In a later encounter, he shared a profound insight through a simple anecdote: "Once a man
visited a king for some work. The king said, 'You know, actually you are lucky to have come to
me with your problem. Just last night I had a thought about your solution.' The man immediately
fell to his knees in gratitude. The king was surprised and asked why. The man replied, 'Sir, a
thought came to you last night to help me. That thought must have descended directly from God,
so I am grateful to Him.' The king was humbled by this wisdom."

After sharing thisstory, Babuji remarked with a twinkle, "A thought is a vibration from the
Divine, not from such a low being like me."
Divine Qualities in Humans: The Essence of Saintliness
Babuji Maharaj's definition of saintliness - "one who only gives and never asks for anything in
return" - encapsulates the essence of divine qualities that humans can cultivate. This selfless
giving reflects the nature of divinity itself, which continually creates, nurtures, and sustains
without expectation of reward Heartfulness.
The cultivation of divine qualities in humans is a central theme in Heartfulness practice. These
qualities include courage, hope, faith, wonder, compassion, tolerance, and most importantly,
love. Through dedicated spiritual practice, these attributes naturally blossom within the heart,
transforming the practitioner from within Heartfulness.
Babuji's teachings on love, grace, passion, and sin offer profound insights into the nature of these
divine qualities. His definition of love as both "a bloom of a flower that perishes soon" and
"craving for Reality" highlights the dual nature of love - its transient emotional expression and
its deeper spiritual essence as a longing for connection with the ultimate reality.
Similarly, his characterization of grace as "sweetness of mind" points to the gentle, refined
quality of consciousness that emerges through spiritual practice. This sweetness represents the
natural state of the purified mind - calm, receptive, and in harmony with divine will.
Perhaps most revealing is his description of sin as "improper adjustment of things," suggesting
that spiritual imperfection stems not from inherent evil but from imbalance and misalignment.
This perspective offers a compassionate approach to human failings, viewing them as
opportunities for realignment rather than reasons for condemnation.
These divine qualities are not distant ideals but latent potentials within every human being.
Through the practices of Sahaj Marg - meditation, cleaning, prayer, and constant remembrance -
these qualities are gradually unveiled and expressed in daily life, leading to a state where the
individual becomes a living embodiment of divinity in human form.
Balancing Material and Spiritual Life
One of the most revolutionary aspects of Babuji Maharaj's teachings is his approach to the
relationship between material and spiritual existence. Rather than viewing them as opposing
forces, he taught that they "should go hand in hand, like the two wings of a bird" Heartfulness.
This balanced approach to spirituality addresses a fundamental challenge faced by modern
seekers: how to pursue spiritual growth while fulfilling worldly responsibilities. Sahaj Marg
offers a solution by integrating spiritual practice into everyday life, transforming ordinary
activities into opportunities for inner development.
5.
As explained inthe Sahaj Marg tradition, "Material life is the vehicle in which the soul has come
into this world only to get out of it when it reaches its destination" Sahaj Marg. This view
reframes material existence not as an obstacle to spiritual growth but as its necessary context -
the very arena in which spiritual evolution occurs.
The practical application of this principle involves maintaining awareness of the divine presence
throughout daily activities. Whether engaged in professional work, family responsibilities, or
social interactions, the practitioner of Sahaj Marg strives to perform these duties with a spiritual
attitude - seeing them as opportunities for service rather than mere worldly obligations.
This integration of material and spiritual aspects creates a harmonious existence in which
external success and inner growth reinforce each other. When inner disintegration is reduced
through spiritual practice, more energy becomes available for both material and spiritual
pursuits, leading to greater effectiveness in all areas of life Heartfulness.
The beauty of this approach is its universality. Regardless of one's profession, social status, or
cultural background, the principles of Sahaj Marg can be applied to create a balanced life that
honors both material needs and spiritual aspirations. This makes it a truly modern spiritual
method - one that acknowledges the realities of contemporary life while offering practical tools
for transcending its limitations.
Self-Realization for the Modern Man
In today's fast-paced, achievement-oriented world, the journey toward self-realization may seem
like an ancient pursuit irrelevant to modern concerns. Yet Babuji Maharaj's Natural Path offers a
revolutionary approach that makes self-realization not only accessible but essential for
contemporary life.
Self-realization in the Heartfulness tradition is understood as the recognition and experience of
one's true nature - beyond ego, conditioning, and limited identity. It involves merging individual
consciousness with the ultimate reality, achieving a state where the boundaries between self and
the divine dissolve. Far from being an abstract philosophical concept, this represents the highest
potential of human existence Heartfulness.
The Heartfulness approach to self-realization is uniquely suited to modern practitioners through
its emphasis on:
1. Integration: Rather than compartmentalizing spiritual and material aspects of life,
Heartfulness promotes their integration, creating a unified existence where every action
becomes part of the spiritual journey.
2. Simplicity: The practices are straightforward and accessible, requiring no special
knowledge, equipment, or environment. They can be performed in the context of ordinary
life, making them practical for busy individuals.
6.
3. Experience overBelief: Emphasizing direct experience rather than doctrinal adherence,
Heartfulness appeals to the empirical mindset of modern seekers who prefer to verify
truths through personal observation.
4. Transmission: The unique feature of pranahuti (spiritual transmission) accelerates
progress, making significant spiritual advancement possible within the constraints of
modern life.
Through these approaches, self-realization becomes not an esoteric achievement for renunciates
but a practical goal for anyone willing to dedicate themselves to regular practice. The result is a
gradual transformation of consciousness that enhances every aspect of life - improving
relationships, increasing effectiveness at work, and fostering greater emotional balance and
resilience.
Moreover, the Heartfulness meditation practice directly addresses the common challenges of
modern existence: stress, distraction, emotional volatility, and existential uncertainty. By
establishing a connection with the divine presence in the heart, practitioners discover an internal
source of guidance, strength, and clarity that helps them navigate the complexities of
contemporary life with grace and wisdom.
Merging with the Ultimate: The Highest Goal of Human Existence
What is the ultimate purpose of human life? According to Babuji Maharaj, it is nothing less than
complete merger with the divine - a state where individual consciousness becomes one with the
ultimate reality. This merger represents the culmination of spiritual evolution and the fulfillment
of human potential Sahaj Marg.
The path to this merger involves a gradual process of purification and refinement. Through
regular meditation on the heart, the practitioner establishes a connection with the divine presence
within. Through the cleaning practice, accumulated impressions and tendencies that obscure this
connection are removed. Prayer fosters an attitude of humility and surrender essential for
spiritual progress. And constant remembrance maintains awareness of the divine throughout
daily activities.
As these practices take root, a transformation occurs at the deepest level of being. The heart,
once clouded by conditioning and attachment, becomes increasingly pure and receptive to divine
influence. Thoughts become more refined, emotions more balanced, and actions more aligned
with higher principles. Gradually, the sense of separate identity - the ego that maintains the
illusion of separation from the divine - begins to dissolve.
This process culminates in a state where the individual consciousness merges completely with
the ultimate, achieving what various traditions have called enlightenment, liberation, or God-
realization. In this state, the limited self is transcended, and one experiences oneness with all
existence. Yet paradoxically, this doesn't mean the loss of individuality but rather its fulfillment -
the realization of one's true nature as an expression of the divine.
7.
What makes SahajMarg's approach to this highest goal particularly relevant for modern seekers
is its directness and efficiency. By focusing on the essential elements of spiritual practice and
offering the assistance of pranahuti (yogic transmission), it creates a highway to the ultimate
goal, allowing significant progress even within the constraints of contemporary life.
This merger with the ultimate is not presented as a distant or abstract ideal but as the natural
destiny of every human being - the state toward which all evolution inevitably moves. Through
dedicated practice of the Natural Path, this highest goal becomes an achievable reality,
transforming the journey of life from a series of worldly pursuits into a conscious evolution
toward divine fulfillment.
Spirituality in the Material World: A Modern Approach
Living spiritually while navigating the demands of contemporary society presents unique
challenges. Babuji Maharaj's teachings offer a revolutionary framework for spirituality in the
material world - one that neither rejects worldly engagement nor becomes consumed by it.
The Natural Path approach recognizes that material existence provides the necessary context for
spiritual growth. Rather than viewing material concerns as distractions, it sees them as
opportunities to practice divine qualities in everyday situations. This perspective transforms
ordinary interactions into spiritual training grounds, where patience, compassion, honesty, and
service can be cultivated amidst the challenges of modern life Sahaj Marg.
Practical strategies for maintaining spirituality in the material world include:
1. Starting the day with meditation: Beginning each morning with heart-centered
meditation establishes a spiritual foundation that influences all subsequent activities.
2. Practicing constant remembrance: Maintaining awareness of the divine presence
throughout the day transforms ordinary tasks into spiritual practice.
3. Evening cleaning: Removing the accumulated impressions of the day prevents the
buildup of stress and negative tendencies, preserving inner balance.
4. Living by principles: Following ethical guidelines such as truthfulness, moderation, and
non-possessiveness creates harmony between material actions and spiritual values.
5. Seeing work as service: Approaching professional responsibilities as opportunities to
serve others infuses mundane tasks with spiritual significance.
This integrated approach creates a lifestyle where spiritual growth and material efficiency
enhance rather than oppose each other. As inner disintegration decreases through regular
practice, more energy becomes available for both spiritual and worldly pursuits, leading to
greater effectiveness in all areas of life Heartfulness.
Moreover, this modern approach to spirituality addresses contemporary issues such as
environmental concerns, consumerism, and technological dependence. By promoting values of
moderation, non-possessiveness, and inner fulfillment, it offers solutions to the excesses and

imbalances of modernsociety while providing a framework for meaningful, purpose-driven
living.
Conclusion: The Heart of Divine Living
As we reflect on the teachings of Babuji Maharaj and the Natural Path he offered, we return to
the profound simplicity of his definition of saintliness: "One who only gives and never asks for
anything in return." This selfless giving embodies the essence of divinity in human form - the
ultimate expression of spiritual attainment.
The journey toward this state of divine living begins with recognizing that spirituality is not
separate from ordinary existence but represents its deepest fulfillment. Through the practices of
Sahaj Marg - meditation, cleaning, prayer, and constant remembrance - we gradually transform
our consciousness, unveiling the divine qualities that lie latent within our hearts.
Love, which Babuji described as both "a bloom of a flower that perishes soon" and "craving for
Reality," becomes the driving force of this transformation. It begins as an emotional attachment
but evolves into a profound longing for connection with the ultimate reality. As this love
deepens, it naturally expresses itself as selfless service, compassion, and an ever-expanding
embrace of all existence.
Grace, the "sweetness of mind" that emerges through spiritual practice, becomes our natural state
- a gentle, refined quality of consciousness that perceives divine presence in all situations. Sin,
understood as "improper adjustment of things," is gradually corrected as we align ourselves more
perfectly with divine harmony through regular practice and inner purification.
In the end, the highest goal of human existence - merger with the ultimate - becomes not just a
distant ideal but an ever-present reality experienced in each moment of heart-centered awareness.
We discover that the divine is not something external to be reached but our own deepest nature
to be realized. And in this realization, we find the true purpose of human life: to become a living
embodiment of divinity in the material world - one who only gives and never asks for anything
in return.
