In 2002 Tom Avery walked into the record books by becoming the youngest

culminated in the mind-boggling inflation of late 1923 - a dreadful time when
the number of marks to the pound was at one point equivalent to the number
of metres from the earth to the sun. In the last few years, with the banking crisis
and quantative easing, “When Money Dies” has returned to fashion among
financiers and governments all over the world. The book is a classic social
historical study of what can happen when public spending gets out of control.

                      Mikhail Gorbachev
Mikhail Gorbachev was President of the Soviet Union from 1988 to 1991. In
1990 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in acknowledgment of his influence
in defusing East-West tensions. As General Secretary he embarked on a radical
programme of economic and social reform, summarised as glasnost (openness)
and perestroika (restructuring). Political changes introduced under this
programme included the toleration of dissident views, with the establishment in
1989 of a Congress of People’s Deputies to enable such views to be heard, and
culminated in 1990 in the Communist Party losing its monopoly of power.

                 John Kufuor
John Kufuor was President of Ghana from 2001-9. President Kufuor was
a prime mover in bringing democracy back to Ghana after the country had
been subjected to a long line of coups and military dictators. In 2001 he was
democratically elected as President, defeating Jerry Rawlings, who had been in
office for 20 years. President Kufuor implemented major changes in education,
health-care, and infrastructure development. President Kufuor was Chairman

States from 2003-5, and Chairperson of the 53 nation African Union from
2007-8. He has carved out a reputation for peacemaking: In Sierra Leone, he led
negotiations that halted the civil war; In the Ivory Coast, he led the negotiations
and peace missions that abetted violence and political conflicts; In Liberia,

the country from plunging into a deeper civil war again; In Kenya, he led a

David was the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary from 2007-10. Aged 41,
he became the youngest person in 30 years to hold the position. He was
responsible for a global network of 16,000 diplomats in over 160 countries. He
established a distinctive and respected voice for an internationalist Britain, from
the war in Afghanistan to the Iranian nuclear programme to engagement with
the world’s emerging powers. David’s advocacy of a global role for a strong
European foreign policy led to him being widely supported for the new job of
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs - a position he declined to continue
his work in the UK. As Minister for Schools from 2002-4 he was regarded as a
leader of reform. As Secretary of State for the Environment, he pioneered the
world’s first legally binding emissions reductions Bill.

                      Sugata Mitra
Sugata Mitra is Professor of Educational Technology at Newcastle University in
the UK. He works in the areas of Cognitive Science, Information Science and
Educational Technology. His contributions include a number of inventions and
first-time applications. Among other applications, he is credited with having
started the database publishing industry (particularly the Yellow Page industry)
in India and Bangladesh. In 1999, Sugata dug a hole in a wall bordering an
urban slum in New Delhi, installed an internet-connected PC, and left it there
(with a hidden camera filming the area). What they saw were children from the
slum playing around with the computer and in the process learning how to use it
and how to go online, and then teaching each other. In the following years they
replicated the experiment in other parts of India, urban and rural, with similar
results, challenging some of the key assumptions of formal education. The ‘Hole
in the Wall’ project demonstrates that, even in the absence of any direct input
from a teacher, an environment that stimulates curiosity can cause learning
                      through self-instruction and peer-shared knowledge.

In 2007, Azran was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X, the world’s
first truly low-cost long-haul airline. He led the start-up team that developed the
business plan, raised capital, secured relevant licenses and approvals, acquired
aircraft and launched AirAsia X’s first inaugural flight to the Gold Coast, Australia
in November 2007. Despite a tumultuous 2008 and 2009 in global aviation,
AirAsia X has expanded from one aircraft to nine, tripling revenue and passenger
volume to RM750 million and over 1 million passengers in 2009. AirAsia X now
flies to eleven destinations in Australia, Greater China, India, Korea and Europe
                      - breaking many long-haul airline conventions and pioneering various innovative
services. Even with its nascent aircraft fleet, AirAsia X operates with the world’s
lowest long-haul unit cost and the world’s highest aircraft utilisation. Its London
route is the longest low-cost flight in service today.

a super-luxury resort and spa group with properties in 6 countries. In 1995,
together with his wife Eva, they opened their first property - Soneva Fushi, in
the Maldives, creating a high end market in what was formerly a mass market
destination. In 2000, Soneva Fushi was awarded the Best of the Best by the
readers of Conde Nast Traveller UK. Sonu’s concept was Intelligent Luxury
and was the forerunner and inspiration for a host of imitators who saw the
potential in going green. By 2009, Six Senses had 26 resorts that were either
open or under development, and 41 Six Senses Spas that are in the group’s
own properties or hosted by third-party managed properties. Whereas spas
were once the differentiator, he contributed greatly to making them a qualifier.
Sonu’s other goals for the next decade include the recognition of Six Senses
properties in the top 10 best places to work, worldwide - already well on the
                 way, with resort-like facilities for hosts living on-site at many of his properties;
