PSY340 Week 3 Assignment
Operant Conditioning: Behavior Modification
Your goal for this operant conditioning activity is to plan a hypothetical experiment in behavioral
modification. You will apply what you have learned about principles of operant conditioning to a
proposal for change the behavior of someone you know. Please note, because of the need for
human subjects IRB approval, you will not actually be conducting the experiment, just proposing it
and explaining what the results might look like if you had conducted it.
In preparation of your Behavior Modification Plan, please thoroughly explain each of the following
points using appropriate terminology:
1. Who is the participant? (Preferably this will be someone else, but it could be you or a pet.)
2. Identify the target behavior: Describe the behavior that you would like to change. This could
be something the participant already does or something you would like him or her to do. Select a
behavior which is interesting to you as well as measurable. Please make sure that your choice is
legal, moral and ethical.
4. 3. Discuss what would you use as "consequences," that is, reinforcers and/or punishers?
(Reinforcers are generally preferable. You want to identify consequences which you believe would
work for your participant, and explain why you believe they would work).
4. How would you deliver the "consequences"? (You will need to consider in practical terms
how you would be able to do this with your participant and what "schedules of reinforcement" you
would use).
5. Produce a proposal of your behavioral modification plan and what you expect the results of
your experiment would be if you carried it out. Consider both the potential limitations and strengths
of your plan and the various scenarios that could result from it.
Your Report should include the following:
• Title
• Introduction explaining what your project was about, give background on the techniques you
are using.
• Description of the procedures you would implement if you carried out the plan.

Here we examine forgetting, the other side of learning and memory. We don’t remember everything
we want to, which can be annoying or even more troublesome, but we also don’t remember many
things we don’t need to. This is also important. Forgetting is a critical component in our processing of
information. Can you imagine what it would be like to never forget anything?
Use the Excelsior College Virtual Library to find an article on forgetting in a psychological journal.
Make sure you include the entire citation for the article you chose.

7. PSY340 Week 7 ResearchPaper
In this course, you have the opportunity to research a topic of your choice relating to the psychology
of learning. Topics may include (but are not limited to) key theories of learning, classical
conditioning, reinforcement, punishment, and memory.
Your topic must be submitted to the instructor for approval no later than the last day of Module 4
The paper must be approximately 2,000 words (about 10 pages) in length and to be written and
documented according to the standards of the American Psychological Association’s (APA)
Publication Manual, 6th edition. The guidelines for the written form of the text and references are to
be strictly adhered to.
The rigors of a research paper demand that you include current journal articles from acceptable
journal sources. Historical references should utilize original source material when possible. A
maximum of three internet sources may be included. A minimum of 5 research articles from the
professional literature must be used to support your paper. A ten-page paper should utilize
approximately 10 sources/references.
This project is due no later than the last day of Module 7 and is worth 20% of the overall grade for
this course.
