Explain two
reasons why the
Bible is a source
of wisdom and
authority.
Mary is a model for the Church for many reasons. Firstly, Mary
was born without sin. Therefore she was chosen to be Jesus’
mother. This shows us that we should try to be without sin
also.
Secondly, Mary has such a strong faith we should follow her
example. When she was told she was going to give birth to
God’s Son, she did not doubt her role or refuse it, she put her
ultimate trust in God, which we should.

d) Evaluate
Agree / disagree with the
statement
Some Christians would agree…..
State a reason why They would agree because….
Say whether this is a strong or
weak argument
I believe this is a strong / weak
argument.
Say why it is This is because……
Agree / disagree with the
statement
Other Christians would
disagree…..
State a reason why They would disagree because….
Say whether this is a strong or
weak argument
I believe this is a strong / weak
argument.
Say why it is This is because……
“The Magisterium provides a vital function for today”
Arguments to support the
statement
 Why would people agree?
 Add detail and examples
 Use scripture
 Is it a good argument? Why?
(strong / weak)
Catholics would agree with this statement that the Magisterium
provides a vital function today. This is because the task of the
magisterium is to ‘interpret the word of God’ as stated in the
Catechism. This is important because the magisterium, continues to
guide Catholic’s today, especially on matters that are not in the Bible.
An example of this if contraception and other modern advances in
medicine. However, I believe this to be a weak argument as
sometimes the Magisterium is still outdated and does not fully
engage with the modern world so cannot be a vital function for
today.
Arguments for a different view
 Why would people disagree?
 Add detail and examples
 Use scripture
 Is it a good argument? Why?
(strong / weak)
Many other Christians would disagree, for example the Church of
England. They do not recognise the Pope as the leader and a source
of authority. Instead they use the Bible as their sole source of
wisdom and authority. I think this is a much strongly argument as it
allows Christians to interpret the Bible for the world today more
freely. For example of the issues of IVF.
Conclusion
 Include your opinion
 Strong / weak to weigh up
arguments for and against
In conclusion, I believe that the Magisterium is useful for Catholics as
a source of authority. However, a stronger argument is that it is not
vital, instead Christians should look directly at the Bible as the
inspired Word of God
“Formal worship is central to the life of a Christian”
“Belief in hell is very important”
