Exam Content
• All content covered in lectures, GLS, SS,
readings, Clinical Skills sessions and IS is
potentially assessable.
• Exams only assess a small sample of content
• Not everything can or will be assessed
• In Year 1, we generally try to assess a breadth of
content, with depth in some areas

Medicine and Dentistry
Exam answer writing
• Please THINK before you WRITE
• Please write on the lines provided
• Note that the spaces provided for written answers should be
sufficient for enough depth to completely answer the question
• If you make an error, clearly cross out and rewrite
• If we CAN’T READ it, we CAN’T MARK it
• If you make a mistake on the MCQ/EMQ marking sheet, rub it
out or put a cross through it (pencil is therefore best)
• If we can’t determine which is the answer you have selected, you
will not receive a mark

MBBS Assessment Med 1 decisions in previous years
2018 Mid year exams the pass score was 54.8% Standard Error of Measurement 3.0%
Thus students needed to achieve >57.8% on exams for their results to be considered satisfactory
31 students were flagged as at risk midyear in 2018 from a cohort of 200 students
2017 Mid year exams the pass score was 50.5% with the Standard Error of Measurement of 3.0%
Thus students needed to achieve >53.5% on exams for their results to be considered satisfactory
25 students were flagged as at risk midyear in 2017 from a cohort of 187 students.
2016 Mid year exams the pass score was 54% with the Standard Error of Measurement 2.8%
Thus students needed to achieve >56.8% on exams for results to be considered satisfactory.
In actual fact, we know that some students whose results fall within +1SEM to +2SEM at the
midyear exams are also at risk of failing the year. We have the evidence from several years of
results.

MBBS Academic Progression Rules (Midyear)
• Students with a score below + 1 SEM above the cut score will be offered
supplementary examinations for Study Period 1.
• In the MBBS, supplementary exams to collect more data about students
whose performance was not clearly satisfactory.
• Supp results do not stand alone – we average the results from the midyear
main exams and supp exams when we consider the overall results.
• Supp exams are NOT a second chance for students who haven’t studied
during semester but they can improve results up if students put in significant
work.

Preparing for exams
• Revision NOW! SwotVac is too late to start.
• Test yourself – reading over material is no guarantee you
know it. Put your notes aside and see what you can
remember about different material you have learned.
• Write your own questions – use the ones presented as guides,
go to the GLS questions, share questions around.
• Study groups can be useful but not if you become more
rattled by what others know.
• Stress is normal and can be useful if it gives you energy.
Relaxation exercises also useful – see UWS site – start using
now.
