Overview:
ManchesterDividedisacampus eventonManchesterUniversity’scampus. Itisdesignedfor
students, facultyandstaff toparticipate togetherinfriendlycompetition. Our mainobjectiveswhere to
elicitasmuch participationaspossible, tomake sure everyone isaware of the event, andtocreate
excitementforthe future. The eventwassetupfor teamsto have five studentswithone facultyorstaff
memberonthat team.We heldthe eventonthe intramural softballfields, the track, andthe PERC main
arena. Throughoutthe eventwe hadmultiple minieventsthatthe teamsparticipatedin. These events
included (inchronological order):ahomerunderby,tug-a-war,awaterballoontoss,arelayrace,knock
out,and dodge ball. The homerunderbytookplace onthe intramural softball field. The teamspicked
three batters, one pitcher, andtwoshaggers. They were allowed tenswingstotryand hitas many
homerunsastheycould. The homerunline wasexactly200feetfromhome plate. The teamshittennis
ballswithnormal bats. The tug-a-warwasa randomly-selectedtournamentstyle event. Duringthe
waterballooneachpersonpartneredupwithsomeone fromhisorherownteam. Whena balloonwas
caught, onlyone side of the partnerstookstepback. The relayrace tookplace on the track. We had
fourdifferentlegsof the races. These were:wheel barrel race, agolf ball ona spoonin the mouth,a
crab walk,and the three-leggedrace.Duringknockout,we hadtwobasketsto beginwith.Thenwhen
the two linesgotsmaller,we combinedthemintoone basket. Inthe lineswe staggeredthe teams so
that one memberfroma teamwas nexttoa memberfromhisorher ownteam. Dodge ball wassetup
like aseededtournament. Duringthe day,we awardedthe firstplace teamsforthe eventswith5
points, secondplace withthree points, andthirdplace withone points. Atthe endof the day we
calculatedthe pointsandgave the winningteamsix giftcardsto local businessesandatrophy. Our
missionin creatingManchesterDividedwastobringfacultyandstudentstogetherinacompetitive
eventthatwas enjoyableforall involved. Ourvalueswere centeredonthatconcept. One value wasto
make the eventan opportunityforfacultyandstudentstobecome more connected. Anotherwasto
make thisan eventthatparticipantswouldtake pride inand compete inannually.
Marketing:
While planningthe event,we knew thatwe wouldneedavarietyof marketingtacticstomake
thiseventassuccessful aswe wanteditto be. In the beginning, we wantedtodo asmuch marketingas
we possiblycould.Some strategiesthatwe wantedtoexecutewere sidewalkchalk,flyers,emails,social
mediasites, website, andwordof mouth. As a group,we didmost of the marketingstrategiesthatwe
had planned. We hademailssentoutto the studentsandfacultymembers. One otherthingthatwe
didsuccessfullywassitatlunchand dinnertablesadvertisingthe event.One thingtoconsiderforfuture
yearsis havingsignage atthe tables toattract attention. The social mediasitesworkedprettywell.
However,we believe startingthemsoonermayhave ledtomore success. One thingextrathat we did
that we didnot planon doingwashavingone of our membersgoand discussoureventonthe Spartan
Sport Show. Withoutadoubt, our mostsuccessful marketingstrategywasthe wordof mouth. We had
manyparticipantscome to our event, because we talkedtothemaboutitpersonally. The email thatwe
sentto studentsisattachedto the endof the documentasobjectone.
SponsorshipEfforts:
In the beginning, ourgrouphopedtohave fooddonatedtous byChartwells. We wantedto
have a cook out at the endof the event. However, whenwe contactedChartwellsaboutthe possibility
of thishappening, theysaidtheywere completelybookedforthe year.We didhave a few sponsorsfor
the prizeswe handedoutto the winningteam. The three local businessesthatdonatedprizeswere
Main View,SunTan& Body, and Modern Impressions.Theyeachgave usa giftcertificate of some sort
whenwe contactedthemaboutdonations.

Bandanas
Fiscal Information:
Our original budgetdifferedfromouractual one greatly. We were planningongettingthe
participantsbandanas. We believedthatthiswould create teamunityandmore competition. However,
due to late signupswe decidednottodo this.We alsowantedto purchase Gatorade Powder. Since we
receivedwaterfromthe AthleticTrainingdepartment,we alsodecidednottodothiseither. Another
thingthat affectedourbudgetwasthatCoach Dzurickhelpedusmake a trophyso we didn’thave to
purchase one. We originallywere planningonspending $123 dollars. We actuallyendedupspendingon
only$34 dollars.
Communications:
In orderto make thisa successful event,we hadtocommunicate withmultiplepeople. The
personwe probablycommunicatedthe mostwasPaulaFinton. We hadto reserve all of the spacesthat
we usedfor oureventthroughPaula. Anotherpersonthatwe communicatedalotwithwasProfessor
Ryan Hedstrom. We talkedtohimabout the equipment borrowedfromMU Intramurals. We also
communicatedwithDave Good. He spray paintedourline forthe homerunderby. One lastpersonwe
communicatedwithforthe eventwasRHA.It letususe the tug-a-warrope.JacobSweetalsodidawrap
up article aboutour eventforus. It was featuredinthe OakLeaves.
Risk Management:
Before the eventwe hada fewstrategiesthatwe plannedonexecutingforriskmanagement.
Some of these included:create awaiver, alertcampussafetyof the event, make acode of conduct, and
make sure the venue issafe. If we had practicedour mini eventsaheadof time,we wouldhave seen
that bare hands are not safe on a track. We endeduphavinga bunchof participantswithtornup hands
fromthe wheel barrel leg onthe track, whichwasa part of the relayrace. Luckily,we hadJenBeer
there. She helpedcleanpeoples’handsandgave themadvice onwhatto do withtheirinjuries. Instead
of holdingthe race onthe track,in future yearsitcouldbe inthe grassy areain the middle of the track.
Our waiverandcode of conductthat isattached at the endof thisdocumentasobjecttwo.
Operations
Beinga campusevent,we believedthathavingthe eventonaSundayafternoonwouldbe the
bestfor the students. We knewthatstudentswouldn’twantto do an eventlike thisonaschool night
because of the length. Alsowe didn’twanttokeepprofessorsandfacultymembersawayfromtheir
familiesorfree time duringthe week.Duringthe weekof the eventwe made sure we hadall the
equipmentwe neededtomake the eventpossible. We alsomade sure we had the teamssetfor
Sunday. The day before the eventwe emailedall of the participantsandremindedthemof the event.
We stuckto our day of schedule prettywell. One thingwe didnotsee lastingaslongasit didwasthe
home run derby. However,we adjustedtothissetbackprettywell. Ourdayof schedule will be attached
at the endas objectthree.
Evaluation:
Afteroureventwascompletelyoverandwe tore everythingdownthatday,ourgroup was
prettyhappywiththe way thingsturnedoutforour event. We believedwe were preparedandhadthe
correct signage forparticipantstoknowwhatwas happeningandwhere itwashappening. One positive
for our eventwasthe factthat everyone stayedforthe durationof the event. Forusto keepstudents
there forfour hourswas a huge successforus. Anotherpositive wasthe factthatthe participants
lookedlike theywerehavingfun.Evenwhenthingsweren’tgoingasplanned,suchasthe handsbeing
injured, people werestillsmilingandhavingfun. One lastpositive of oureventwasthatwe got the
amountof teamsthat we aimedtoget. Thisshowedthatour marketingstrategiesworked.
Despite the positivesof ourevent,we didhave some negatives. One negative wasthe lackof
detailswiththe rules. We saw thispresentwithdodge ball. There were multiple timeswhere havinga
setof ruleswouldhave alleviatedsome confusion. Anotherdownfall of oureventwasthatwe did not
practice our mini eventsaheadof time. If we didwe wouldhave seenthat200 feetwasa little farfor
the homerunderby. We would’ve alsoseenthathavingthe relayrace on the track was nota goodidea.
One lastthingwe wouldchange for future yearsisthat we hada lotof lagtime betweeneventsand
while otherteamswere awaitingtheirturntocompete. Thismayhave beenboringfora participant. In
orderto change this,I wouldhave hadmusicgoingand somethingtooccupythe downtime. We could
have had corn hole orladdergolf forteamsthat were justwaitingaround.
