IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS
OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
My media product challenges real life conventions mainly in the ancillary section of this course, throughout my research
I was forced to search for acceptable magazine listings and newspaper adverts that can be linked with my own. This
makes the creation of both the magazine listings and my newspaper advert significantly simpler. While searching for
suitable existing designs online, I came across many of my genre. Therefore, it was made rather difficult to choose the
exact one to inspire my design. On the other hand, I based my choice wisely, looking deep into elements of the advert
and magazine listings, conventions must be considered. For example, common vital aspects of a magazine listing and
newspaper advert is, colour schemes, imaging, headline, sub headings, use of text and layout. The previous list stated
reveals crucial elements which must be taking into consideration when creating the ancillary tasks. The newspaper
advert example in which I chose to look at had an over whelming layout, enough to draw anybody away from looking
into it. As this appeared as a major push factor, I challenged this convention when creating my own documentary
newspaper advert and feel as though I assured the layout’s attraction. As for my Magazine listing’s example, the colour
scheme was very intimidating, the main purpose of the ancillary tasks is to advertise a specific something, plain and
simple. However, the magazine listing had my attention drawn away from the topic at hand. When creating my
magazine listing, I knew that I too had to challenge this component of my inspiration. Hence, I kept the colour scheme
simple yet never the less striking.
Another contributor to my in-depth research was watching various documentary that can be linked to mine. By pursing
these proceedings, I watched the channel 4 documentary release of educating Cardiff. This documentary is very much
like my own not just by style and genre, but by the conventions of a successful documentary. For instance, the
beginning of this documentary series and of each documentary episode in fact, scenes were portrayed of glancing live
footage yet to be revealed in the following episode. I too used and developed on this process as when I was watching
the documentary, it introduces great thrill to the programme, also brought be excitement in what I was about to watch
correspondingly. From that moment onwards, I noted that this must be a participating feature in my short documentary.
When the creation stages had arrived, I thrived to follow up on my research by collecting and gathering footage of the
location in which my documentary is being filmed at. The grounds of Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary school, the
location of every documentary despite style and/or genre must be made clear to the audience, thus by which better
way of portraying the location of my documentary other than to use the glancing scene method to open my
documentary.
