Q1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?

 I was set a task to produce a trailer of a genre of my choice, along with this, I had to
create 2 ancillary texts which was a magazine cover and a film poster. The genre I
had chosen to create my trailer for was thriller and I had to ensure that I created an
interesting narrative.
 My trailer was based around a 15 year old boy battling with his inner demons as well
as someone around him. After conducting research on films of the thriller genre, I had
noted that there were a few things to consider:
- to avoid showing the storyline as this prevents spoiling it for the audience
- to present the audience with a narrative they would be able to understand and
nothing too confusing which will not make any sense
- to use a wider range of shot types and scenes which will entice the viewers instantly
- information on the actors, as well as the production and distribution companies.
 My trailer has shown conventions of an enigmatic atmosphere by being able to
withhold the main parts of the narrative and this will encourage the viewers to want
to watch my film.
 The ending of my trailer was like that so the person following the protagonist in my
thriller trailer is still unknown and so it doesn't still give anything away to the audience.
I had included a range of scenes in my trailer where it shows actual things that are
happening to the protagonist done by someone and scenes where it’s all in the
protagonists’ head. Most of my scenes were filmed during the evening and so it was
dark. This makes the scenes look a bit more unpredictable and dangerous and the
protagonist in my trailer more vulnerable. In addition, there were a lot of scenes with
only the protagonist and this is because I wanted to viewers to feel as though he is
isolated. Throughout the trailer, the audience is presented with a sense of tension and
not much is given away, leaving the audience to try to figure out what is going on
but as they are unable to, they will be intrigued to watch my film.
 Within a variety of thriller trailers, there are scenes of actions included, therefore, I had
decided to include some scenes containing some key props of action including a
car. Also, some of the scenes prolonged the sense of enigma, in order to develop
the conventions of a thriller but tried to make it an action scene, of which was subtle
as opposed to a fight to avoid confusion of the genre of my film.
 In order to create tension, I had used a range of fast paced shots. Usually, a thriller
trailer is opened with slow paced shots and this is to introduce the storyline,
characters and any present themes. There are a number of fade to black and cut to
black transitions I’ve use throughout my trailer and this helps to build up to the
tension. Tension is also built as the shots becomes shorter and somewhat faster so the
audience will be unable to figure out what exactly is going on and they will be
encouraged to watch the film.
 There is also suspenseful background music which adds and builds up to the tension
as well as the suspense. When editing, I had to be careful with the diegesis and
ensure that it was effective as there was background music and voiceovers as well as
the dialogues and sounds coming directly from some of the scenes.
 The film poster and magazine cover I created fit well into the thriller genre. When
researching about the genre, I noticed the similarity of colours used throughout most
of the thriller films I had researched. These colours include black, red and white which
I used in my film poster and magazine cover.
 Overall, I believe that my main product and ancillary texts both develop and
challenge the forms and conventions of real media products. I believe they look
realistic and would easily fit into the thriller genre. I feel that my thriller trailer does
challenge conventions but still follows the form of an original thriller trailer.
