The HMO originated as a small rural hospital over a century ago and has since expanded to serve 18 counties. It recently acquired two additional regional hospitals - a small rural critical access hospital to serve its existing population, and a private full-service hospital in a mid-sized city to gain an emergency department and trauma center while serving more HMO members. The CEO of the large HCO wants an intern to evaluate different HMO models and recommend the best fit for the region given its rural origins and recent expansion.
