Matteo	Renzi	is	the	most	tweeted	about	of	all	EU	leaders	
	
Brussels,	20	March	2014	–	Only	1	month	after	his	appointment,	Matteo	Renzi,	Italy’s	new	Prime	
Minister,	is	already	Europe’s	most	tweeted‐on	politician,	surpassing	all	the	other	EU	leaders	on	
social	media.	Data	released	by	TNS	opinion	this	month	reveal	that	the	Italian	Prime	Minister	
currently	holds	the	pole	position	in	the	“European	Leader	Watch”	index	which	monitors	the	social	
media	debate	about	Europe’s	political	decision‐makers.	He	is	followed	by	UK	Prime	Minister	David	
Cameron	and	the	French	President	François	Hollande.	
Matteo	Renzi,	who	has	attracted	the	most	attention	among	Twitter	users	with	over	195,3891	
mentions	so	far	in	March,	dominates	the	political	debate	on	Twitter.	His	closest	challenger,	
David	Cameron,	is	slightly	behind,	with	158,523	tweets.	The	rest	of	the	competition	trails	far	
behind:	François	Hollande	is	in	third	place	with	86,931	mentions,	while	other	political	leaders	
such	as	Germany’s	Chancellor	Angela	Merkel	follow	with	only	43,161	mentions	over	the	same	
period.		
On	average,	between	40,000	and	70,000	tweets	referring	to	European	leaders	are	published	
every	day.	
Within	the	European	Institutions,	the	President	of	the	European	Parliament	Martin	Schulz	
demonstrates	a	strong	presence	on	Twitter	in	the	run‐up	to	the	European	elections.	
With	only	63	days	to	go	before	the	European	elections,	Mr	Schulz,	who	is	standing	for	the	post	of	
President	of	the	European	Commission,	is	the	only	candidate	to	be	ranked	among	the	top	ten.	
José	Manuel	Barroso,	President	of	the	European	Commission,	and	Catherine	Ashton,	the	EU	High	
Representative	for	Foreign	Affairs	are	the	other	EU	leaders	to	join	President	Schulz	in	the	top	10.	
His	main	competitor	for	the	position	of	President	of	the	European	Commission,	Jean‐Claude	
Juncker,	is	just	outside	the	top	ten	in	13th	place,	while	Guy	Verhofstadt	stands	at	23rd.	
By	creating	word	clouds	and	following	trending	key	words,	the	innovative	“European	Leader	
Watch”	tool	can	also	analyse	the	main	issues	being	discussed	by	Twitter	users	when	talking	
about	their	leaders.	Unsurprisingly,	this	week	the	Twitter	world	focused	its	attention	on	the	
referendum	in	Crimea.	
With	the	launch	of	this	new	social	media	monitoring	tool,	TNS	opinion,	the	European	leader	in	
political	and	social	research,	aims	to	provide	an	unfiltered	picture	of	public	opinion	in	real	time.

TNS opinion Rue Jules Cockx 8-10, B-1160 Brussels Belgium t +32 (0)2 661 7200 Under Embargo till 20th March 2014, 10am PRESS INFORMATION Matteo Renzi is the most tweeted about of all EU leaders Brussels, 20 March 2014 – Only 1 month after his appointment, Matteo Renzi, Italy’s new Prime Minister, is already Europe’s most tweeted‐on politician, surpassing all the other EU leaders on social media. Data released by TNS opinion this month reveal that the Italian Prime Minister currently holds the pole position in the “European Leader Watch” index which monitors the social media debate about Europe’s political decision‐makers. He is followed by UK Prime Minister David Cameron and the French President François Hollande. Matteo Renzi, who has attracted the most attention among Twitter users with over 195,3891 mentions so far in March, dominates the political debate on Twitter. His closest challenger, David Cameron, is slightly behind, with 158,523 tweets. The rest of the competition trails far behind: François Hollande is in third place with 86,931 mentions, while other political leaders such as Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel follow with only 43,161 mentions over the same period. On average, between 40,000 and 70,000 tweets referring to European leaders are published every day.
