The Eureka Stockade was a rebellion by gold miners in Ballarat, Australia in 1854. The miners were protesting unfair mining license fees and lack of voting rights. Led by Peter Lalor, the miners built a stockade fort for defense. When the government troops attacked, 22 miners were killed. Although the rebellion failed, it led to reforms including lower license fees and voting rights for miners. The Eureka Flag with its symbols became a symbol of miners' rights and Australian democracy.
