Essay The Power of Healing
The Power of Healing There is always the right way to do something, then of course, there the other
way. According to Webster's Ninth New College Dictionary, to be unconventional means to be out of
the ordinary, not lacking originality or individuality. Therapeutic touch is unconventional. It is a
method of healing using energy. Therapeutic Touch (TT) is the practice of facilitating healing using
Universal healing energy. It has been shown to help the sick or hurt, calm the feared and comfort
those who need comfort. Because of it's different approach to helping restore health rather than the
"normal" taking a pill, TT has not been readily accepted by many medical doctors. In A Doctor's
guide To Therapeutic Touch, author Susan

Amazingly, I calmed down and stayed quit on the floor. Therapeutic Touch not only works, it
works wonders. For some reason TT is not very popular in hospitals. In a strange different and a
little weird but how come it is not accepted. In a hand out that my mother put out, she lists three
underlying principles of Therapeutic Touch. " #1 a human being is an energy field." Meaning
everyone has energy all around him or her, inside and out. This energy can be focused, with
practice, to help in a positive way. "#2 A human being and the environment are continually,
simultaneously, and mutually exchanging energy." This means that the energy that you have is
not just your own, energy encompasses everything. "#3 Universal order is a force innate to all
energy fields." This means that there is an order to nature that can be trusted This isn't the way that
people tending to think but that doesn't mean that TT has to be unconventional. TT is
acknowledged as part of nursing practice by the nursing organization of New Brunswick. Hence, it
is available ideally to any patient who requests it, but few are using it. More people are not using it
because not enough people are using it. Publicity is a major factor in making or breaking an idea.
TT puts out the idea that everyone can help everyone including his or her selves. If that happened,

Depression Essay
Depression is a very big topic to discuss. The most commonly asked questions are: What is
depression, and what disorders are related to depression? How common is depression? Is it serious?
What treatment is used? And, What kind of symptoms should a person be looking for?
Depression is more than the everyday ups and downs. You know when a person is depressed when
their sad feelings interfere with their everyday life. Depression doesn't only affect feelings, but can
change behavior, physical health and appearance, academic performance, social activities, and the
ability to make decisions that are face every day. The causes of depression are still unknown, but
researchers have found a genetic link between most depressive disorders....show more content...
People who don't think that teens could suffer from depression are wrong, depression can affect
people of any age, race, ethnic or economic group. One out of every twenty–five teens suffers from
depression. Depression can be very serious. It has been noted that depression can be linked to poor
school performance, alcohol and drug abuse, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and
hopelessness. Over the past twenty–five years, researchers have found that the rate of suicide among
teenagers and young adults has increased dramatically. Suicide is often linked to depression. Some
say that talking about depression only makes it worse. The truth is that talking to someone about
your feelings can help you realize that professional help is needed. By showing concern and
support, you can encourage someone to talk to a trusted person. Depression is treatable. Between
eighty and ninety percent of people with depression can be helped. For the more serious cases of
depression antidepressant medications and psychotherapies can be used. For the milder, less serious
cases, psychotherapy may be enough by itself. Antidepressants are used for symptom relief and
psychotherapy is used to learn more effective ways to deal with everyday problems through talking.
In most cases psychotherapy is done in ten to twenty week sessions. Therapists focus on the patients'
disturbed personal relationships. In cases where the patients' symptoms don't progress with in

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Help ' Essay
The film "The Help" (2011), is a story based on the daily lives of prominent white women and the
relationships with their African–American housemaids in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s
Civil Rights movement in America. A well–to–do white woman and central character in this film,
Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, aspires to be a journalist and decides to write and publish an exposГ©
of the stories of the housemaids in Jackson to achieve this goal, however, only two maids, Aibileen
Clark and Minny Jackson are willing to discuss their experiences with her. The other maid's in
Jackson resist telling Skeeter their stories, fearing the punishments they would endure if the
authorities were to find out. In spite of this, after the malicious arrest of one of their befriended
maids, all of the maids begin to share their experiences, which consist of racial hostility and being
treated as intrinsically subservient to white people. The story Skeeter publishes entitled The Help,
creates a disturbance among the white families in Jackson, by exposing the racism the maids are
faced with, forcing the white families to reflect upon how they have treated their maids. The
storyline represented in The Help exhibits examples of the primordial approach to race and ethnicity,
as well as numerous sociological concepts including segregation, internalized oppression, and white
privilege, which will be exemplified in this paper in order to uncover the race relations evident
within this film.

Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and
even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need
for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the
olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious
sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some
extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together
for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read,
we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content...
There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for
knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic
importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind
and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for
pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it
differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves
tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides
knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing"
time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those
who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute
for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap
created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full
man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man". Thus a widely–read man is a better
conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.

Reflective Essay On Helping People
We always talked about helping others. I noticed that you love helping people, it gives you joy to
help others, and I think that's something we both share. I understand now, when you cannot help
me, you don't feel the joy. In a way you feel like you can't help me and it may feel like a rejection. I
am not rejecting you when you offer help and I say no. There are times where I should have asked
for help and I didn't, because I thought you couldn't, which isn't an excuse, I should have given
you a chance. I didn't ask for help because I was embarrassed and thought you would think less of
me. I have problems with helping others and my professor actually pulled me aside from the final
and wanted me to write why I felt like I need to be a savoir, and help others so much. I talked to her
after class as a therapist and not a professor. I realized that what I thought was helping, was
actually not. I thought all help was good and it's not. When I go out my way and help others who
been helped their whole lives, I'm just feeding into what they want. I'm not letting them learn on
their own, and will continue to help, and its actually not helping at all. I am guilty of doing that to
you sometimes. I'm always trying to help and it's not real help and we get stuck in the same cycle.
We went back and forth on this relationship, at one point you didn't want it, and I did, another point
you wanted it and I didn't. There were points where we both wanted it and It was wonderful. I had

Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students
Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in
High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully
master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what
they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not
mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps
them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether
assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master
material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content...
In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even
writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of
the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework
assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the
homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning
abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets
filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not
challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of
homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred
or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the
time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning
packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief
summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know.
Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since
they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read

Friendship Essay: Helping a Friend in Need
It is very sad to see a friend or relative suffering or in need, especially when they pretend that
everything is all right. It is a delicate situation when approaching someone in this predicament, as
often a person's pride stands in the way of reaching out for comfort. How to offer your help to an
independent friend or relative in this position requires a bit of clever manipulation and a not–so–
obvious plan in order to help.
If the problem at hand is a financial matter, the first response would be to offer them a loan. On the
other hand, most people would be embarrassed to admit to this, and will perhaps be offended at the
offer. However, instead of outright offering them money, trading a service in return for payment
would not seem as...show more content...
This will certainly make them feel better and will be helping them out at the same time.
Friends or relatives who have children may experience times when they cannot afford to give
them the luxuries of toys, games or name brand clothing. At the same time, while most children
do not understand hard times, these friends or relatives hurt inside because of this. It would
probably be insulting to them if you bought a bag of toys, a new wardrobe for the kids or a slew
of games and delivered these items in order to help. Overall, there is a way to present such items
in a fashion that will not seem like charity. While honesty is the best policy, lending a helping
hand when we are in a position to do so often takes precedence. Telling our life long friend or
family member that our children received clothing as a gift, but it did not fit, or perhaps received a
duplicate toy or game and offering it to their children is a way to help in times of despair.
Many times when family or friends decide to meet or get together to go out for dinner, drinks, or
even to a movie, we take for granite the expense of these excursions and expect that everyone can
participate. On the contrary, when a friend or relative bows out, the reason why they decline
becomes obvious. Here again, little white lies come in to play, and compassion takes over.
Mentioning to this friend or relative that you

Discrimination In The Movie The Help
African American men and women have suffered racial injustice and acts of discrimination
throughout history. The Help stars Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny. These
women, as well as many other African American women, serve as "the help" for upper class white
women and their families. Throughout the film, the women share their hardships as maids in the
hopes of raising awareness for racial discrimination. The HelpI is a film that not only reveals the
hardships of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, but it also reveals many social
justice themes that we should take into consideration as Christians. The first theme that is prevalent
in The Help is dignity of work and the rights of workers. A...show more content...
It taught me a lot about how African Americans were treated in society around the time of the
Civil Rights Movement. Not only did it teach me a lot about our country's history, but it was also
very entertaining. I did not realize how much African Americans were disrespected before I
watched this movie. Even though Aibileen and the other maids were helping white families raise
their children, cook meals, and do laundry, they were still treated horribly. Seeing how the maids
were so used to this horrible treatment broke my heart. Many parts of the film were sad, but it gave
me a lot of knowledge that I did not have prior to watching it. It was really inspiring how even
though the maids were treated so disrespectfully, they did not fight back. Instead, they took a
peaceful approach and impacted their communities by sharing their

Asking For Help Essay
Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of
my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it
comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I
need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to
aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low
score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so
that I may become a successful student. The first strategy is to learn that I cannot do everything by
myself. Typically, I never ask for...show more content...
We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need
someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the
favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area
of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I
realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would
employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve
their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not
want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In
order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish
that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student
does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are
only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is
more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead
to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep
moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an

Teen Mental Health
Even though the discussion about mental health has become more common, teenage mental health
is often left neglected. 37 percent of students 14 and older drop out of school because of mental
illnesses like depression, anxiety, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post–traumatic stress disorder,
and the number continues to grow ("Mental Health by the Numbers"). Untreated mental illness in
teens can be particularly debilitating because of the added stress from family life, school, work, and
the pressure of adolescence. Teenage brains are still learning and developing, yet some are suffering
so much that they commit suicide, the third most common cause of death in young adults ("Suicide").

They may deal with disordered thinking or emotions for weeks, months, or even years before they
realize that the problem will not go away on its own. A mental health screening in schools would
help fix this. A mental health screening could be the push a student needs to recognize that
something is wrong. Teachers should also be taught a class on mental health so that they can
recognize the signs of a student in distress.
A third way to help improve the mental health of teenagers would be to give them an outlet.
Teenagers go through a lot, and they often feel as if they have no one to talk to for a multitude of
reasons. Their friends may already have problems of their own to sort out, and their parents may
not be able to handle such a negative discussion without reacting badly. Most school counselors
simply don't have the time to meet with a student to talk about their feelings, because they have to
do academic planning for hundreds of other students. In order to fix this, every school should have
a psychologist on campus. Making it mandatory for every school to have a professional
psychologist could help alleviate a load of students on the counselor, allowing them to do a better
job. Having a psychologist would be beneficial to students who need to talk through their problems
regularly, and would make sure someone was there to help them if they suddenly needed it. A school

Therapeutic Use Of Self Essay
Therapeutic use of self involves using one's personality, body language, active listening that is used
to create and maintain a therapeutic relationship with others (Lowe et al., 2007). Establishing trust
is also an important aspect of therapeutic use of self, to address the needs and goals of the client,
which helps our scope of practice to remain client–centered. Using therapeutic use of self is
beneficial for occupational therapists (OT), as it facilitates interaction with the client. It also
encourages and allows the therapist to obtain necessary information, and to alleviate fear or anxiety
that may take place during treatment session. During Level I Fieldwork at a SNF, I was able to
apply these principles during a treatment session for a client diagnosed with dementia that was

Therapy
Today many people seek professional therapy or counseling for a limited amount of time in order
to deal with different life crises. Others seek professional help for the majority of their lives in
order to deal with a psychological disorder. After reading this chapter on Therapy, I learned that this
was not always the case, and that the way our society views therapy, and the meaning of therapy, has
changed dramatically of the years. This chapter not only explains the evolution of therapy, it explores
the different therapeutic approaches.
I found chapter thirteen to be very interesting. Learning about the different types of therapy was very

Trephining was the most disturbing picture. I am still amazed that people thought that anything
whatsoever could be solved by chiseling away at a person's head. The picture of the skull was
extremely disturbing: I cannot even fathom how horrible it would have been to be a patient of such
practices. Also one would think that after the first gaping hole in a person's head with no results, the
chiseling would stop. However it is obvious by the number of holes in the skull that this was a
procedure that was tried multiple times on one patient. Other than the trephined skull, I also found it
unusual that bloodletting was such a common practice. It was particularly troubling to learn that it
was used for treating mania, which is something I have experienced.
All of the information on the different types of therapies has helped me to more fully understand
psychology. This chapter is dedicated to explaining the current methods of treating people with

Human Rights And Social Work
Starting with Jane Adams in the early 20th century, human rights were at the forefront of her work
with the Hull House which helped establish the social work profession as we know it (Healy, 2008).
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the values set and regulated by the NASW share a
common theme focusing on, dignity, self–determination, and improving the quality of life for
everyone. Social workers are on the forefront of advocating for, and creating social change, and
justice (NASW, 2015). Social work constantly challenges racism, discrimination and the inhumane
treatment of vulnerable people.
Internationally the social work profession attempts to link vulnerable populations with basic needs
like, food, healthcare, housing, and equality all which reflect article 25 of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights (United Nations, 2014). Social workers wear many hats, and have established roles
in many institutions like hospitals, schools, nursing homes, acting as liaisons between the
establishments and individuals who seek their services (Reichert, 2007).
2. What social work practices might constrain human rights?
The Social work is a profession not only rewards merit, but there is also a monetary gain. The
majority of qualified social workers are employed by local government agencies which can create a
conflict of interest because of their obligation, and commitment to their employer. The government
agencies have their own political and financial agenda that can be

Persuasive Essay On The Internet
It can be considered as one of the most valuable types of technology. During the last several years
we have come to be more and more dependent on the Internet and in particular moving huge chunks
of data across large distances. The Internet allows people to communicate with each other across the
world within mere fractions of seconds with the help of E–mail and Messenger. The Internet also
allows for expressing opinions and obtaining up–to–date information from the world–wide–web. The
new software is being developed every day which uses the Internet as the carrier for long distance
voice calls and video conferencing like FaceTime and Skype, which would hold the key to the future
of our society. Whether someone is sending e–mail, posting on message boards, or reading the news
online, people are guaranteed the same freedom of self–expression that we enjoy offline. In other
countries, the mere act of accessing websites that criticize the government is an offense that can land
you in prison. Australia, similar to the United States, perceives and ensures a person's freedom of
expression. Although, they have an alternate view on what is appropriate on the Internet. Australia
has taken the position to confine adults privilege of the right to speak freely on the Internet, in order
to avoid children for getting material that is esteemed unsuitable for minors. However, it also averts

It is without doubt that humans will encounter problems that limit access to a preferred want or
need at sometime during their lives and this was no different in my own life. Researchers D'Zurilla
and Goldfried (1971) define a problem as "any life situation or task that demands a response for
adaptive or effective functioning" (415). My life situation in question became deciding between
attending school leading to future desired payoffs or working a menial full–time job that would not.
The first step in the problem solving process, allowed me to identify the problem. A situation can
be perceived or thought of as problematic when an individual encounters situations disturbs them or
they find that it keeps them from a goal (Bingham, 1999). The problem surfacing in affording an
education and paying for everyday necessities became the central focus at that point in my life and
defined the problem that needed an immediate response. The problem solving process can best be
defined as the best way to overcome obstacles in situations and the steps used to help overcome them
(Peterson et al., 2002). The second step, sort out information that is not needed provided clarity
during times in which the process seemed overwhelming. This called for a potential solution, a
desired outcome and how to get there. The research that had initially been part of the formulating
method had sparked an interest in the military. This idea was supported by the benefits that

Personal Essay: Care For Others
Care for others. The way this will help you achieve happiness is that when you help others it gives
you a warm feeling inside. It makes you feel as if you have done something right. This feeling is
almost unexplainable. Helping others is one of the best things you can do. For example, when you
complement someone the best feeling is when you see the look on that persons face and see how
happy you made them. Also, if you do not care for others you will live a lonely life. Without care for
others no one will want to be around you. So, if you care for others you will have a joyous life.

joy and love because every day you get to wake up and do something that truly makes you happy.
Stay in a joyous mood. If you are always in a good mood and spreading joy, there is no way to be
negative. You will always be looking on the bright side seeing how fortunate you are. This will
keep a smile on your face showing that you are truly happy. Also, help others around you to be in a

Learn to forgive quickly. This will make it where you are unable to hold a grudge. If you stay

Essays On The Help

  • 1. Essay The Power of Healing The Power of Healing There is always the right way to do something, then of course, there the other way. According to Webster's Ninth New College Dictionary, to be unconventional means to be out of the ordinary, not lacking originality or individuality. Therapeutic touch is unconventional. It is a method of healing using energy. Therapeutic Touch (TT) is the practice of facilitating healing using Universal healing energy. It has been shown to help the sick or hurt, calm the feared and comfort those who need comfort. Because of it's different approach to helping restore health rather than the "normal" taking a pill, TT has not been readily accepted by many medical doctors. In A Doctor's guide To Therapeutic Touch, author Susan ...show more content... Amazingly, I calmed down and stayed quit on the floor. Therapeutic Touch not only works, it works wonders. For some reason TT is not very popular in hospitals. In a strange different and a little weird but how come it is not accepted. In a hand out that my mother put out, she lists three underlying principles of Therapeutic Touch. " #1 a human being is an energy field." Meaning everyone has energy all around him or her, inside and out. This energy can be focused, with practice, to help in a positive way. "#2 A human being and the environment are continually, simultaneously, and mutually exchanging energy." This means that the energy that you have is not just your own, energy encompasses everything. "#3 Universal order is a force innate to all energy fields." This means that there is an order to nature that can be trusted This isn't the way that people tending to think but that doesn't mean that TT has to be unconventional. TT is acknowledged as part of nursing practice by the nursing organization of New Brunswick. Hence, it is available ideally to any patient who requests it, but few are using it. More people are not using it because not enough people are using it. Publicity is a major factor in making or breaking an idea. TT puts out the idea that everyone can help everyone including his or her selves. If that happened, perhaps doctors, nurses and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Depression Essay Depression is a very big topic to discuss. The most commonly asked questions are: What is depression, and what disorders are related to depression? How common is depression? Is it serious? What treatment is used? And, What kind of symptoms should a person be looking for? Depression is more than the everyday ups and downs. You know when a person is depressed when their sad feelings interfere with their everyday life. Depression doesn't only affect feelings, but can change behavior, physical health and appearance, academic performance, social activities, and the ability to make decisions that are face every day. The causes of depression are still unknown, but researchers have found a genetic link between most depressive disorders....show more content... People who don't think that teens could suffer from depression are wrong, depression can affect people of any age, race, ethnic or economic group. One out of every twenty–five teens suffers from depression. Depression can be very serious. It has been noted that depression can be linked to poor school performance, alcohol and drug abuse, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. Over the past twenty–five years, researchers have found that the rate of suicide among teenagers and young adults has increased dramatically. Suicide is often linked to depression. Some say that talking about depression only makes it worse. The truth is that talking to someone about your feelings can help you realize that professional help is needed. By showing concern and support, you can encourage someone to talk to a trusted person. Depression is treatable. Between eighty and ninety percent of people with depression can be helped. For the more serious cases of depression antidepressant medications and psychotherapies can be used. For the milder, less serious cases, psychotherapy may be enough by itself. Antidepressants are used for symptom relief and psychotherapy is used to learn more effective ways to deal with everyday problems through talking. In most cases psychotherapy is done in ten to twenty week sessions. Therapists focus on the patients' disturbed personal relationships. In cases where the patients' symptoms don't progress with in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Analysis Of The Movie ' The Help ' Essay The film "The Help" (2011), is a story based on the daily lives of prominent white women and the relationships with their African–American housemaids in Jackson, Mississippi, during the 1960s Civil Rights movement in America. A well–to–do white woman and central character in this film, Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, aspires to be a journalist and decides to write and publish an exposГ© of the stories of the housemaids in Jackson to achieve this goal, however, only two maids, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson are willing to discuss their experiences with her. The other maid's in Jackson resist telling Skeeter their stories, fearing the punishments they would endure if the authorities were to find out. In spite of this, after the malicious arrest of one of their befriended maids, all of the maids begin to share their experiences, which consist of racial hostility and being treated as intrinsically subservient to white people. The story Skeeter publishes entitled The Help, creates a disturbance among the white families in Jackson, by exposing the racism the maids are faced with, forcing the white families to reflect upon how they have treated their maids. The storyline represented in The Help exhibits examples of the primordial approach to race and ethnicity, as well as numerous sociological concepts including segregation, internalized oppression, and white privilege, which will be exemplified in this paper in order to uncover the race relations evident within this film. • 4. Essay on The Importance of Reading Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content... There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time. A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man". Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view. Literature is a form Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Reflective Essay On Helping People We always talked about helping others. I noticed that you love helping people, it gives you joy to help others, and I think that's something we both share. I understand now, when you cannot help me, you don't feel the joy. In a way you feel like you can't help me and it may feel like a rejection. I am not rejecting you when you offer help and I say no. There are times where I should have asked for help and I didn't, because I thought you couldn't, which isn't an excuse, I should have given you a chance. I didn't ask for help because I was embarrassed and thought you would think less of me. I have problems with helping others and my professor actually pulled me aside from the final and wanted me to write why I felt like I need to be a savoir, and help others so much. I talked to her after class as a therapist and not a professor. I realized that what I thought was helping, was actually not. I thought all help was good and it's not. When I go out my way and help others who been helped their whole lives, I'm just feeding into what they want. I'm not letting them learn on their own, and will continue to help, and its actually not helping at all. I am guilty of doing that to you sometimes. I'm always trying to help and it's not real help and we get stuck in the same cycle. We went back and forth on this relationship, at one point you didn't want it, and I did, another point you wanted it and I didn't. There were points where we both wanted it and It was wonderful. • 6. Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content... In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know. Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Friendship Essay: Helping a Friend in Need It is very sad to see a friend or relative suffering or in need, especially when they pretend that everything is all right. It is a delicate situation when approaching someone in this predicament, as often a person's pride stands in the way of reaching out for comfort. How to offer your help to an independent friend or relative in this position requires a bit of clever manipulation and a not–so– obvious plan in order to help. If the problem at hand is a financial matter, the first response would be to offer them a loan. On the other hand, most people would be embarrassed to admit to this, and will perhaps be offended at the offer. However, instead of outright offering them money, trading a service in return for payment would not seem as...show more content... This will certainly make them feel better and will be helping them out at the same time. Friends or relatives who have children may experience times when they cannot afford to give them the luxuries of toys, games or name brand clothing. At the same time, while most children do not understand hard times, these friends or relatives hurt inside because of this. It would probably be insulting to them if you bought a bag of toys, a new wardrobe for the kids or a slew of games and delivered these items in order to help. Overall, there is a way to present such items in a fashion that will not seem like charity. While honesty is the best policy, lending a helping hand when we are in a position to do so often takes precedence. Telling our life long friend or family member that our children received clothing as a gift, but it did not fit, or perhaps received a duplicate toy or game and offering it to their children is a way to help in times of despair. Many times when family or friends decide to meet or get together to go out for dinner, drinks, or even to a movie, we take for granite the expense of these excursions and expect that everyone can participate. On the contrary, when a friend or relative bows out, the reason why they decline becomes obvious. Here again, little white lies come in to play, and compassion takes over. Mentioning to this friend or relative that you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Discrimination In The Movie The Help African American men and women have suffered racial injustice and acts of discrimination throughout history. The Help stars Viola Davis as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny. These women, as well as many other African American women, serve as "the help" for upper class white women and their families. Throughout the film, the women share their hardships as maids in the hopes of raising awareness for racial discrimination. The HelpI is a film that not only reveals the hardships of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, but it also reveals many social justice themes that we should take into consideration as Christians. The first theme that is prevalent in The Help is dignity of work and the rights of workers. A...show more content... It taught me a lot about how African Americans were treated in society around the time of the Civil Rights Movement. Not only did it teach me a lot about our country's history, but it was also very entertaining. I did not realize how much African Americans were disrespected before I watched this movie. Even though Aibileen and the other maids were helping white families raise their children, cook meals, and do laundry, they were still treated horribly. Seeing how the maids were so used to this horrible treatment broke my heart. Many parts of the film were sad, but it gave me a lot of knowledge that I did not have prior to watching it. It was really inspiring how even though the maids were treated so disrespectfully, they did not fight back. Instead, they took a peaceful approach and impacted their communities by sharing their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Asking For Help Essay Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so that I may become a successful student. The first strategy is to learn that I cannot do everything by myself. Typically, I never ask for...show more content... We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Teen Mental Health Even though the discussion about mental health has become more common, teenage mental health is often left neglected. 37 percent of students 14 and older drop out of school because of mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post–traumatic stress disorder, and the number continues to grow ("Mental Health by the Numbers"). Untreated mental illness in teens can be particularly debilitating because of the added stress from family life, school, work, and the pressure of adolescence. Teenage brains are still learning and developing, yet some are suffering so much that they commit suicide, the third most common cause of death in young adults ("Suicide"). In order to fix the problem, there needs to be a...show more content... They may deal with disordered thinking or emotions for weeks, months, or even years before they realize that the problem will not go away on its own. A mental health screening in schools would help fix this. A mental health screening could be the push a student needs to recognize that something is wrong. Teachers should also be taught a class on mental health so that they can recognize the signs of a student in distress. A third way to help improve the mental health of teenagers would be to give them an outlet. Teenagers go through a lot, and they often feel as if they have no one to talk to for a multitude of reasons. Their friends may already have problems of their own to sort out, and their parents may not be able to handle such a negative discussion without reacting badly. Most school counselors simply don't have the time to meet with a student to talk about their feelings, because they have to do academic planning for hundreds of other students. In order to fix this, every school should have a psychologist on campus. Making it mandatory for every school to have a professional psychologist could help alleviate a load of students on the counselor, allowing them to do a better job. Having a psychologist would be beneficial to students who need to talk through their problems regularly, and would make sure someone was there to help them if they suddenly needed it. • 11. Therapeutic Use Of Self Essay Therapeutic use of self involves using one's personality, body language, active listening that is used to create and maintain a therapeutic relationship with others (Lowe et al., 2007). Establishing trust is also an important aspect of therapeutic use of self, to address the needs and goals of the client, which helps our scope of practice to remain client–centered. Using therapeutic use of self is beneficial for occupational therapists (OT), as it facilitates interaction with the client. It also encourages and allows the therapist to obtain necessary information, and to alleviate fear or anxiety that may take place during treatment session. I am still amazed that people thought that anything whatsoever could be solved by chiseling away at a person's head. The picture of the skull was extremely disturbing: I cannot even fathom how horrible it would have been to be a patient of such practices. Also one would think that after the first gaping hole in a person's head with no results, the chiseling would stop. Other than the trephined skull, I also found it unusual that bloodletting was such a common practice. All of the information on the different types of therapies has helped me to more fully understand psychology. This chapter is dedicated to explaining the current methods of treating people with psychological disorders in order to help them through a rough time in life. This chapter on therapy shows the side of psychology that is the result of the hard work of a multitude of psychologists and doctors. Earlier this year I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, which entitles me to long hours of therapy to help me understand and deal with my illness. Although I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
