Surgical Techniques
How many people have ever wondered about the advances in medical technology and procedures
throughout the ages? I am going to talk about these advances in medical technology and procedures.
Through the centuries our knowledge of human anatomy and surgical techniques has grown greatly.
Surgeries began with techniques that sound rather barbaric. Since then we have advanced so much
that we are now able to perform heart transplants, eye surgery, and many other medical procedures.
Our knowledge of anatomy, surgical techniques, and ways to keep people alive have vastly grown. I
am, going to cut open and dissect the history of surgical techniques, anathestics, and human
anatomy throughout the Stone Age, Middle Ages, sixteenth century, nineteenth... Show more

In 1960 the laser was invented in was used for the first I surgery in 1964. A good example of an
eye surgery would be cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the lens of
your eye and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is used to treat the
clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye (cataract). (Mayo Clinic 2013). This shows that
cataract surgery is a common laser surgery that improves vision greatly. Lasers were again used
for a keyhole surgery in 2008 to treat brain cancer. To do this surgeons use one or two lasers to cut
a hole in the patients head to help cure brain cancer. Medical surgery technics have advanced greatl,

A Lesson Before Dying By Ernest Gaines
A hero is not only someone with superpowers but can be anyone. It can be anyone like you or
me. A hero is someone who is willing to stand up for other people. The book, A Lesson Before
Dying, takes place in Louisiana and is about an innocent Black man convicted and sent to the
electric chair. In the story there are real people that Ernest Gaines alludes to. Ernest Gaines makes
an allusion to Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson. Beside these two, Mamie Till also stepped up and
was audacious. They were all fearless and gave hope to many other people because of what they
were doing. These heroes took a stand against society and changed the world for everyone. A hero
isn t just Superman but someone who stands up for what they believe in and is a sense of hope for
everyone. Jackie Robinson was the first African AmericanMajor League Baseball player. In the
article, Robinson was calm and knew how to ignore the racism. Robinson didn t fight back when
he was confronted with racism (www.biography.com/jackie robinson). Jackie Robinson changed
baseball by ending racial segregation, which was allowing other African Americans to play in the
major leagues. Jackie Robinson succeeded in putting the prejudice and racial strife aside, and
showed everyone what a talented player he was (www.biography.com/jackie robinson). Jackie put
aside his difference and proved to everyone that he was no different than white players. Jackie was

that she did, but these gaps seem to represent the gap in the history of Zong and its slave cargo.
There are many unknown factors which cannot be found within the pages of the Gregson vs
Gilbert documents, or found through archaic evidence. It is uncertain, for instance, where exactly
the ship was located when the slaves were thrown overboard, and the names of the slaves whose
lives were lost during the incident. Philip clarifies this in her interview with Patricia Saunders
when she states, There is no marker. We don t have the bones. We don t have the Tombstones

And then you have, I suppose, this wonderful thing, the law, that is supposedly so constant and so
unchanging and that at times is modulated by the principles of equity. Equity s purpose was
supposed to soften the hard, unyielding law. And so, as I am talking to you, what I m
understanding now is that my process reversed that you take these hard facts, this desiccated fact

Social And Economic Impacts Of The Industrial Revolution
Introduction In response to the drastic social and economic impacts of the industrial revolution in
the United States during the mid 19th century, labor union were created in order to facilitate fair
negotiations on the behalf of workers with their employers in regard to work related difficulties
such as pay, working conditions, along with other amenities. Article 23 of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on
10 December 1948 following the end of the Second World War identifies the ability to organize
trade unions as a fundamental human right. On a more federal level, the United States Congress
also began passing laws targeted at industries to better working conditions as... Show more content

Team owners gave the NBPA recognition in 1957; however, due to a lack of interest from the
players and a lack general organization, the NBPA was not taken seriously by anyone, and as a
result did not accomplish anything. This all began to change in the 1960 s and 70 s, as the
dynamic combination of growing fan interest and the emergence of network television
transformed sports leagues and individual teams into valuable business enterprises. Naturally,
the players wanted a greater share of the expanding wealth; to do so, they had to do it the same
ways blue collar industrial workers did: through collective bargaining with the help of labor
unions, or in this case, the National Basketball Players Association. Previously dysfunctional
and inconsequential, the NBPA turned to Harvard Law graduate Lawrence Larry Fleisher, an
attorney and sports agent. Hired on as a general counsel in 1962, Fleisher negotiated the first
collective bargaining agreement in all of professional sports in 1967, securing pensions,
minimum salaries, and disability pay for its members. Over the years, the NBPA grew in power
as the NBA grew in popularity. With new massive network television deals, apparel contracts,
advertisement air times, ticket sales, concessions, to name a few sources of the teams revenue,
how to divide the Association s basketball related income (BRI) has remained a central topic of
debate between players and owners. Ever since the creation of the Players

Report on the unique characteristic of qualitative and quantitative research strategy
Quantitative and qualitative researches are based on different paradigms. Qualitative research
strategy focuses mainly on words, human behaviour in the cultural context, attitudes and life
experiences rather than numerical data (IPA Research Strategy. 2010). It focuses on collecting
information to confirm how the variables interrelate. It is subjective and always relies on the
interpretation of the situation of the individual undertaking the study.
As for the quantitative it put emphasis on specific standard or numerical data and applies different
kind of statistical analysis. The researcher always stays independent, apart and uses random
sampling to prevent personal prejudices to misrepresent the results which can easily be generalized
(IPA Research Method, 2010).
Both strategies have their own characteristics.
Table 1 below illustrates different characteristic of the two strategies (H.J. Streubert D.R. Carpenter,

Adolf Hitlers Life
The Early Life of Adolf Hitler
Many individuals all over the world know of Adolf Hitler and his terrible deeds. They know of his
reasonability to the deaths of over 6 million innocent Jews. Many of these individuals believe that
Adolf Hitler was a hateful man, with no heart or compassion. Only knowing the history of the
Holocaust and World War II, that statement is true. But what would a man go through to end up
heartless, compassionless, and evil? Adolf Hitler had a family, a childhood, and a personal history
that not many individuals know about. I decided for my research paper that I would write about
the early life of Adolf Hitler and what changed him into the evil man that the whole world knows
him for.
Adolf Hitler was born on April 20th, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As his grade school years were ending, Adolf had to choose between technical or classical
school. His father pushed him to follow in his footsteps and become a civil servant. Adolf did
not want to follow in his father s footsteps. He wanted to attend classical school and follow his
dreams of becoming an artist. Against Adolf s will, his father sent him to technical high school
in the city of Linz. Hitler s first year in technical school went horribly. Hitler was a country boy
in a school full of city boys. These children looked down on him, assuming that since he was
from the country he was unintelligent. He was very lonely and extremely unhappy his first
year, resulting in poor grades. Adolf had a great resentment to his father for sending him to
technical school. Hitler explained in his book Mein Kampf that he thought that once my father
saw what little progress I was making at the [technical school] he would let me devote myself to
the happiness I dreamed of. (the history place) Many arguments happened between Hitler and
his father. Hitler argued he did not want to spend his life at a desk that his dreams were to be an
artist. Yet his father did not listen and sent him back to the technical school. This caused a bitter
struggle between Adolf and his father. Adolf wanted to do everything opposite of his father. This
is where Adolf s interest in German Nationalism arose and quickly became an obsession. Alois
had worked as an Austrian Imperial Customs agent and expressed loyalty to Austria. Seeing his
father express his loyalty to Austria, Adolf began to express loyalty to the German Kaiser. Hitler
and his friends used the German greeting Heil , and liked to sing the German anthem Deutschland
Uber Alles . The constant struggle with his father would soon end. In 1903 Alois died of a lung
hemorrhage, leaving 13 year old Adolf Hitler the head of the Hitler

Alternatively, modifications in mechanical properties of natural and synthetic biomaterials can be
introduced through enzymatic, physical, or chemical crosslinking. Thermosetting resins (or
thermosets) play an important role in industry because of their high flexibility for tailoring
preferred ultimate properties leading to high modulus, strength, durability with thermal and
chemical resistances provided by high cross linking density. In view of the fact that being
prepared from phenol and formaldehyde and having desirable characteristics and dimensional
stability along with high resistance against various solvents, acids and water, phenolic resins are
broadly used as commodity and engineered materials in transportation industry showing the
versatility for having potential to cope with challenges of advanced technology. Phenolic resins
can be synthesized under both acidic and alkaline conditions [48]. Acid catalyzed resins called as
Novolacs are prepared at a formaldehyde/phenol ratio between 0.75 and 0.85, whereas alkaline

The Influence of Saturday Night Live
On August 29th, 2008 Senator John McCain announced his decision of electing Sarah Palin as his
Vice Presidential Candidate. This declaration provoked controversy amongst many of the United
States citizens and while the majority of the people supported McCain, there were still a select
few of both the republican and democratic parties that were bewildered by his decision. They view
Sarah Palin as ignorant and someone who could not play any significant part in running the United

and they may prefer to watch something that will make them laugh rather than make them think.
Although these spoofs on the election have truth to them, when something is turned into humor it

As today s population continues to grow, each day the number of potential voters grows with it.
The number of young voters is considered one of today s most important topics of society. Having
the ability to swing the decision of the young, newly registering voters could make or break a shot

The Failure Of Native Americans In The Revolutionary War
First, the Revolutionary War was fought between Great Britain and the original thirteen colonies in
North America. It was fought from 1775 to 1783. The failure of the British in this war was likely

General George Winchester had to feed such a large army, and the only way to do so was to take
the food with them, in the form of cattle. The soldiers that were assigned to guard the cattle were
given the title grass guards. The cattle were killed upon demand, and no part of the animal was
wasted. Each soldier was supposed to receive 1Вј pounds of beef,1ВЅ pounds of flour,5 ounces of
liquor, and 5 ounces of vinegar daily. If it was possible, flour was baked into hard biscuits or
bread. Usually, the soldiers cooked their rations together in a pot in groups of five or six.
Another way that Winchester and his soldiers got food was from the sutlers. Sutlers were civilian
merchants that followed the soldiers around, selling their wares at ridiculously high prices. For
example, Hyson Tea was $3.00 per pound, and the average soldier s pay was $5.00 a month.
Luckily, the sutlers offered credit for up to a third of a soldier s pay. This credit, however, let debt
to accumulate tremendously. Some soldiers tried hunting, but to no avail. During the war, the
government relied on contractors to provide the soldiers with food. These contractors would sub
contract with local purveyors, who would often not be able to keep up with the demand. On several
instances during the trip, Winchester had to cut back on rations, usually flour, and substitute the

There are different reasons that business need to segment their markets carefully, this is because

The key thing that Topshop to do is find the variable, or variables that split the market into

The need for segmenting a market is customer needs. To achieve this market research is needed.
Profilers are measurable, discriptive customer characteristics like; age , gender, income etc.

The Little Mermaid
From the moment the world introduced us to television, we have been bombarded with images of
fantasy and happily ever after s. Perhaps the most well known corrupter of reality lies within the
Disney franchise. Disney s, The Little Mermaid, follows a typical fairy tale format in which all
goals and dreams are achieved. Its counterpart, however, moves to the beat of a different drum. Hans
Christian Andersen s, The Little Mermaid, portrays a more serious plot much different from Disney

titles, but a deeper theme runs throughout both of these fictional plots. Despite these two stories

Hans Christian Andersen s story follows a similar protagonist, but a varied story line. She, too,

she could gain an immortal soul (Anderson). Despite her fear, she decides to visit the sea witch

Racial Discrimination
In America special arrangement of conditions prompted the subjugation of individuals who seem
to look similar. The idea of race gives reason as to why people are denied rights and opportunities,
especially since the economy was dependent on slavery. Racial injustices have been considered
natural and justified. There s a lot of overlap between groups. There isn t a single gene, trait, or
characteristic that distinguishes all the members of one racefrom all the members of another. Again,
this is because categories are socially constructed, so there are inconsistencies in the way different
groups are defined. If you change criteria, people fall into different groups. The idea that raceisn t
biological goes against one of our most fundamental assumptions: that there are meaningful, natural
divisions between groups of people. Certainly people look different, but as it turns out, appearances
can be deceiving.
You can t draw any conclusions about those groups beyond what you used to sort people in the first
place. Biologically speaking, traits are inherited non concordantly, which means they are inherited
independently, rather than packaged together. If you know one thing about someone, it doesn t
necessarily tell you anything else about them, so it doesn t make sense to talk about group race
characteristics. we must overcome centuries of inequality before we can unmake it pretending that
race doesn t exist or matter is not the same as treating people equally. Without data on

The Struggle Between Gestational Surrogacy And Adoption
Surrogacy is a good alternative for couples struggling with infertility who wish to have a
biological child. Many couples struggle for years trying to have a child. This can be a very
emotional process to deal with especially when each person involved blames themselves for the
lack of conception. Some unconventional couples would not be able to have a child without
surrogacy. Surrogacy is also a good option for single people who want a child without a significant
other.
There are many ways for infertile individuals to have a child. One option is adoption. Adoption
is very expensive, time consuming, and only available for certain people. Unconventional
couples, single people, and older people might have a tougher time passing the strict guidelines
for adoptive parents. It also may take many years to find a child to adopt, and if you do find one it
might be an older child. Many couples looking to adopt want a baby. Also, many... Show more

Air Pollution In China
It is no secret that China is one of the fastest growing countries in the nation, and over the past 3
decades China has had the fastest economic growth over all major nations. In conjunction to China
s economic development and industrialization comes the excessive burning of coal as a source of
energy. According to china s ministry of environmental protection 9 out of 10 cities have such
robust developed economy that they fail the countries pollution test. Manufacturing activities are
the leading cause of environmental problems, And as the country continues to burn coal the
country shows dangerous signs of apocalyptic levels. China is the world s largest polluter and
they burn almost as much coal as the rest of the world combined. Industrial areas outside the city
burn coal around the clock in order to power factories, high winds carry particulatematter
throughout the country, not only affecting rural areas, but urban communities as well. China s
reasons for using coal as an energy source, as opposed to alternatives, are that they have a huge
resource for coal as well as it is an inexpensive and reliable source of energy. Although, burning
coal is on the decline, it is still a large part of China s energy structure. It is visibly evident that
China s air pollutionis at a frightening all time high. These highly toxic particulate matter levels are
not only concerning for the 21 million residents of Beijing, but as well as the rest of the world.

Emotional Abuse And Its Effects On A Person Essay
Emotional abuse is defined by its devastating effects on a person. It is seen in the forms of
domestic abuse, bullying, and child abuse. Research shows how someone who has been
emotionally abused develops personality disorders, has low self esteem, and even has suicidal
thoughts. Although there has been research that provides a general idea of emotional abuse and
its effects, the research should take a deeper look at how the smallest details affect someone. My
position differs from those who claim they know the true definition of what emotional abuse is.
It doesn t include parents or abusers who claim to know how to define it. Emotional abuse
should be looked at with a magnifying glass because the smallest details are what allow people
to see how emotional abuse affects a person s behavior and mental state, and the smaller details
allow people to give a clearer definition of what emotional abuse is. Although there have been
numerous researches done to define what emotional abuse is, there are many more factors that
researchers haven t found yet. According to Gunta Krumins, she states there are large gaps in
information of this area (IX). What she means by her statement is how there are many pieces of
evidence needed to prove any information given by theorists and psychologists. A majority of
those pieces can be found by taking a look into a person s background. Joan Lachkar, writer of

If DNI exceeds fiduciary accounting income, current distributions in excess of fiduciary accounting
income, even though charged to principal for fiduciary accounting purposes, may carry out taxable
income to the beneficiary of the trust. When DNI exceeds income, the trust may be taxed on the
excess, even though the trust distributed all its fiduciary accounting income. If DNI is less than
fiduciary accounting income, a portion of the distributions may be tax free to the beneficiary.
When the trust document may distribute all or a portion of the income to be distributed currently,
the income reference is the fiduciary accounting income, not the taxable income. The trust is

This novel falls into the category of historical fiction for many reasons. Of course, the fact that
that the novel is based on the 1793 Yellow Fever Epidemic in Philadelphia is one of them.
Matilda and the other characters in the book are fictional characters, but some of the events
taking place happened to real life people during this time period. In the story, Mattie witnesses
her mother become ill with the fever, falls ill of it herself and helps take care of many others
who are sick as well. The symptoms explained in the story are directly correlated with those that
the real people of Philadelphia experienced when ill with the fever. When researching the
epidemic, i learned that some of the third phase symptoms of yellow fever are jaundice, vomiting
blood, shock and multi organ failure leading to death. The author describes all of these things in
the novel through the eyes of Mattie. She describes the symptoms when talking about her mother
when saying that, the fever had taken hold of her symptoms and she wept, calling my father s
name, and when she describes her mother s eyes as cornflower blue eyes poisoned with streaks
of yellow and red, and when she talks about her mother being violently ill and vomiting blood all
over the bed and floor. Although the fever itself is the prominent subject of the story, they re are
many other things in this novel that tie this book accurately to the time period and make it a

BI 201
March 22,2017 Viral Manipulation of Cell Death (Zakeri s Cell Death Lab) The cells of a
multicellular organism are members of a highly organized community. The number of cells in this
community is regulated, not by controlling the rate of cell division, but also by controlling the rate
of cell death. If cells are no longer needed, they commit suicide by activating an intracellular death
program. This process is therefore called programmed cell death, although it is more commonly
called apoptosis. Cell death plays a role in development and the process is called, morphogenesis,
the biological process that causes an organism to develop its shape. It also plays a role in the

Mechanisms of dengue virus induces cell death by taking control of the machinery of the cell. It is
evident that dengue (DEN) viruses can trigger the host cell to undergo apoptosis in a cell dependent
manner. Virally induced apoptosis contributes directly to the cytopathogenic effects of DEN virus
in cultured cells. The induction of apoptosis involves the activation of intracellular signaling
systems. The cellular factors that regulate cell death can adjust the outcome of DEN virus infection
in cultured cells. Apoptosis inhibitors delay DEN virus induced apoptosis, thereby providing a
suitable environment for the virus. During DEN virus infection, cell death is also regulated by the
harshness of the infecting strains. Overall, the purpose this research provides information on the

Reactance Window Drying
Reactance Window drying: Reactance Technology is a novel drying system. It uses circulating
water at atmospheric pressure as a means to carry thermal energy to material to be dehydrated.[2]
Infrared Zone Drying: It uses infrared energy applied to a thin film of product in a series of zones.
This allows product to be maintained at a low temperatureto avoid damage while in its liquid state.
DRYING FUNDAMENTALS Drying involves the removal of moisture in thermal drying; this is
achieved by give the heatto the product. The heat increases the vapor pressure of the moisture in the
product above that of the surrounding air. Pressure and thermal cause the moisture, liquid and
vapor, to move to the surface of the product. Evaporationtakes place and water vapor is transferred
to the surrounding air. This air may become saturated but the process of drying continues if this
moist air is replaced by less saturated air. In a crop there is a combination of free and bound
moisture. Free moisture is water that can move through the product in an unrestricted way. Its
movement is not dependent on the internal structure of the crop. The vaporization evaporation
process is at a maximum when there is sufficient free water in the product to replace that
evaporated at its surface. As this moisture is evaporated the moisture content of the product falls
and the product temperature is close to the wet bulb temperature of the drying air. This period in
the drying process is usually known as

Texas Government Power
The state of Texas has grudge against authority. In fact, there s general distrust against the
government. Texas constantly limits the governor s power, which makes him one of the weakest
governors compared to other states. The plural executive system of Texas takes away power from
the Governor. However, this doesn t detain the governor from playing a vital legislative role.
The plural executive branch in Texas limits the Power of the Governor by dividing the
responsibilities he has into various elected officials. In fact, these elected officials do not have to
answer to the Governor, nor do they work together as a cabinet in the way that executive officials
serve the U.S. President. (Texas Politics). This creates a difficult environment to work; sometimes
those officials do not form part of the same political party, which creates conflict. In addition, the
governor does not form part of the decisions happening in the state, which sometimes create a
miscommunication between Texans and the Government. Texans often blame the governor for
things out of his control. (Collier et al 185). To wrap up, the Governor does not carry a lot of
responsibilities, which makes him weaker. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Controversy Over Gay Parent Adoption
Gay Parent Adoptions
Many states laws deny children in foster care, healthy, loving homes simply because of a
potential parent s sexual orientation (Gray, 2006), The catholic church as well as other
organization s oppose gay adoption based upon religious teachings, while others debate the
legality of it (Gray, 2006). In today s society, many children grow up to be emotionally stable and
successful whether they have a heterosexual couple as parents or a same sex couple as parents.
Gay parent adoptions are an equal right, as they are becoming more mainstream and are as equally
stable as heterosexual adoptions.
Adoption Process
Problems of neglect and abuse begin in the biological home when the biological parents are using
drugs or alcohol. Children s Services are called in to remove the children from the home and are
placed into foster care. It is then that the biological parents of the children have two years to
complete counseling or a treatment program to regain the custody of their children from the State.
If, after these two years the biological parent has not been successful in their program, the State
maintains custody of the children and the children are then legally up for adoption. All prospective
adoptive parents must complete a home study (parenting classes) to verify their competency. Once
completed, the parents search for their adoptive child.
Local and state governments play an important role in gay parent adoptions. Two states, Mississippi
and Utah,

Print News Ethos Pathos Logos
Denzel Washington once said, If you don t read the newspaper you re uninformed, if you do read it
you re misinformed. The difference between print news and electronic news is astounding. Overall,
I must agree with Sam Jacob s argument stating that electronic news will eventually overrun print
news, and that print news doesn t fully state everything that everyone needs to know. Dealing with
rhetorical appeals, I feel that Sam Jacobs leans more on pathos than using logos and ethos to appeal
to the audience. He states a lot about the hurricane and how it affected people and uses that to say
that electronic print news covered more of it because you can have a multitude of news outlets
covering the same story, each saying something different, but as an overall stating the same idea. A

We humans may die, but we can love one another. This applies especially to Lennie and George.
Lennie had already had an Incident, prior to his final one, which proved fatal to his victim .
George had instructed Lennie to hide in a secure spot where only the two of them knew. After
Lennie killed Curley s wife, this is what he did. After waiting in hiding at the location for some
time, George showed up, and ultimately had to shoot Lennie. George did this because he loved
lennie. He knew that Curley was on his way, and that he was armed. If Lennie had fallen into
Curley s hands, I am almost 100% positive that he would have suffered at Curley s hand. He
would have died slowly, and painfully. George loved Lennie so much, that he took matters into
his own hands, and killed Lennie. When reading this part, some of my classmates were against
what George had done. But I see why. I look at it this way. If I had someone who I loved, I would
save them, and sacrifice my own freedom. If anyone did what George did in today s time, they
would be sent to jail. But if you really truly did love that person, the sacrifice would be worth it.
The choices that both Lennie and George made in the final chapters of the book reflect their
character. Lennie was a giant of a man, with immense physical strength, but very little mental
strength. He could be describe as a gentle giant , for lack of a better phrase. He did have several
incidents where his strength got the best of him, but he was a tender, kind man, even though he
had the physical capability to harm almost anyone with ease. George is an able bodied man, who
could be on his own, working to achieve his dream of owning his own land. However, he instead
chooses to stay with Lennie, and look after him the best that he can. If George wasn t there to look
after Lennie, Lennie probably would have ran into trouble a lot sooner than he did with

The Arts and Crafts Movement Essay
The Arts and Craft movement was a social and artistic movement, which began in Britain in the
second half of the nineteenth century and continued into the twentieth spreading to continental
Europe and the USA. Its adherents artists, architects, designers and Craftsmen sought to reassert the
importance of and craftsmanship in all arts in the face of increasing industrialization, which they
felt was sacrificing quality in the pursuit of quantity. Its supporters and practioners were united not
so much by a style rather than the common goal a desire to break down the hierarchy of the arts
and to revive traditional handicrafts and make art that could be affordable to all.

This satisfaction, the proponents of this movement felt, was totally denied in the industrialised
processes inherent in compartmentalised machine production.
In the United States, the Arts and Crafts Movement took on a distinctively more bourgeois flavor.
While the European movement tried to recreate the virtuous world of craft labor that was being
destroyed by industrialization, Americans tried to establish a new source of virtue to replace heroic
craft production: the tasteful middle class home. They thought that the simple but refined aesthetics
of Arts and Crafts decorative arts would ennoble the new experience of industrial consumerism,
making individuals more rational and society more harmonious. In short, the American Arts and
Crafts Movement was the aesthetic counterpart of its contemporary political movement:
Progressivism.
Art Nouveau, 1890 1914, explores a new style in the visual arts and architecture that developed in
Europe and North America at the end of the nineteenth century. The exhibition is divided into three
sections: the first focuses on the 1900 World s Fair in Paris, where Art Nouveau was established as
the first new decorative style of the twentieth century; the second examines the sources that
influenced the style; and the third looks at its development and fruition in major cities in Europe

The Ethical Issues Of Payola
Since its beginnings, the recording industry has suffered from behavior that ranges from the
unethical to worse downright corrupt. Artists have had their music stolen, royalties shorted, and
have been lied to about the potential for riches and fame. In addition, record labels have tried to
take shortcuts to profitability through scams, fraud and even bribery. Two ethical issues
continue to persist within the industry. The first ethical issue is Payola, the practice of a
compensating a media outlet, such as a radio or TV station, for playing an artist s work by the
artist s record label. The second issue is illegal sampling, the practice of taking pieces of an artist
s music, without proper permission, in order to create a new song by another musician. We have
seen both issues rear their heads in the last 5 years and they may plague the industry in perpetuity.
Describe Illegal Sampling and how it relates to your industry or company. The rapid development
and availability of technology has impacted the recording industry s profitability and has even
called into question the industry s ethical practices. The proliferation of home personal computers
and the subsequent introduction of recording and production hardware and software peripherals
made music easier and cheaper to produce. The end of the 80 s saw the birth of Hip Hop and the
emergence of one of the most important tools in the production of the genre the sampler. Initially

Essay on Comparing Love after Love and This Room
Comparing Love after Love and This Room
The two poems with which I compare each other are both poems of celebration. Celebration of life,
love and your identity. The first is
Love after Love by Derek Walcott. This poem is about self discovery.
Walcott suggests that we spend years assuming an identity, but eventually discover who we really
are and this is like two different people meeting and making friends and sharing a meal together.
Walcott presents this in terms of the love feast or Eucharist of the Christian church Eat...Give wine.

The first line in Love.. is,
The time will come
When, with elation,
You will greet yourself arriving,

Whether this will take a mirror or whether a person will realise who they really are through their
own head and deep inside their own souls. It also suggests that you shouldn t care about others
opinions with the line in your own mirror.. which makes you wonder How do I see myself?
which I thought could be trying to question basic human ideas, why do people look at who they
are in the first person, why is the person whose eyes they see through them?! What makes them
that individual? The answers here are clear, a love for life, for one s self and what they feel within
their soul. Both poems, I felt used techniques to suggest being unique. For example, In This Room
the author uses extensive use of caesura, using punctuation in the middle of a line, and enjambment,
a technique by which you don t use normal punctuation at the end of each sentence, thus creating a

because of this.

Computers And Other Types Of Electronics
For ages the question has been debated, to what do humans owe our thinking abilities and can
computers and other types of electronics have the capacity to think? Over millions of years humans
have developed the capacity to think critically and to have higher intelligent thinking than other
animals. The humanbrain has evolved to have a prefrontal cortex which is responsible for executive
functioning. These functions include responding to complex problems, maintaining a set behavior,
planning, problem solving, judging a situation, and making good, intellectual choices. With
developments such as these higher functions, humans have the ability to fully comprehend
situations with their minds, and can act at their own free will to make choices, unlike computers.
Computers must be acted upon in order to think or to search for an answer. Computers are an
invention created by man. They must be programmed to something, they do not exist or act without
the assistance of man. Since computers are not able to think on their own and must be programmed
by man, a computer should not be considered to know how to think. Thinking is complex in that it
requires you to ponder a choice and for you to comprehend and analyze it to make a final decision.
To think is to contemplate various scenarios and situations and reason. In order to think you must
have an initial thoughtor idea that was triggered by some type of stimuli. To contemplate such
stimuli you would need a mindor something to

Comedy Makes Us Superior to Absurdity
Tragedy is what comes to us in the perception of absurdity; it is when we recognize it but we hate
it. However, Comedy is the acceptance of absurdity. By examining the works of Much Ado about
Nothing, Dr. Horribles Sing Along Blog, and Candide we can see that only through comedy do we
make ourselves the superiors of absurdity and therefore we need tragedy to keep the balance
between laughter and torment sustainable.
In the version of John Whedons, much ado parts of tragedy are combined with elements of comedy,
which makes this version an acceptable light comedy. A tragedy is when the characters try to
solve a problem that affects everyone in the story and it ends with all the characters uniting in
either a marriage or a party. Much Ado About Nothing is no exception, and Hero s pretending to
die of humiliation by the friar s orders makes tragedy more vividly present here, Pause awhile,

And on your family s old monument Hang mournful epitaphs and do all rites That appertain unto a

hatred, grief, and despair among the main characters. Therefore, Shakespeare s usage of comedic

serving in the National Guard and Reserve forces. Each year roughly 184,000 new military
personnel must be recruited to replace those who leave (nber.org, 2010). Recruitment has
become more demanding for the U.S. military in the past years. Most of the new recruits
entering the ranks are young men and women between the ages of 17 and 20 years old; they are
America s sons and daughters. Over the past decades, the continued increase of obesity cases in
America has severely affected the supply of prospective military recruits (Gagnon Stephens,
2015). The US military is not immune to this obesity epidemic the rate of service members
kicked out for weight issues continues to rise. Obesity has also become the leading cause of
new recruits being denied entry into military service. Is it possible that the US will reach a point
where it will be unable to sustain a proper fighting force in the future? Since the US armed forces
recruit from the general population, the increase in overweight/obesity in children and adults has
become a concern and a threat to national defense (Hruby et al,. 2015). This apparent issue first
came to public attention in 2002, in a report entitled Are U.S. Troops Too Fat to Fight? The report
revealed trends within overweight active duty and reserves as well as new recruits

I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve Isoroku
Yamamoto, Commander in chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet The Revolution We Have Been
Given Fresh off the defeat of World War II, the Japanese people did not know what to expect from
their American conquerors in the postwar era. Some people praised the American occupation,
claiming that it was the opportunity Japan needed to turn over a new leaf. When America finally
took control of the reconstruction of Japan, they already had a plan. The main goal of the American
occupation was to tame the imperialistic spirit of Japan, that came from military heros like the late

SCAP, viewed educational reform as another way to decentralize Japan (McClain 548). In the
fall of 1946 SCAP placed a full report before a Japanese commission (McClain 548). As result,
jurisdiction over the school system shifted from the Ministry of Education to elected prefectural
school boards. These school board were given the power to select teachers, decide texts, and set
the curriculum (McClain 549). The prewar multi track school system was traded in for an
American style single track school system (McClain 549). The American school system included
six years of elementary school, three years of junior high school, three years of high school, and
four year colleges (McClain 549). Alongside the structural alterations, SCAP officials addressed the
educational philosophy. Subsequently, in 1947 the Japanese government introduced the
Fundamental Law of Education, which declared, that the primary goal of the educational system
was to esteem individual dignity and endeavor to bring up people who love truth and peace

A Research On Sustainable Engineering Building
Sustainable Engineering Building In our world, today we make more and more discoveries
every day and with that new knowledge comes innovation. Since the engineering building was
first built in the late 1890 s, there have been many advances in becoming a more environmentally
friendly building. It is time to transform this historical building into what will be one of the
greenest buildings on any campus in the world. Before the University was Texas A M, it was
initially owned and called East Texas State University. It was not until 1995 that the school was
bought by Texas A M. Texas A M University Commerce was originally established by William L.
Mayo at Cooper, Delta County, in 1889. But sadly after five years the school caught fire... Show

Toxins have leached out of industry facilities and factories into water supplies such as streams,
rivers and into the world s oceans. Marine and aquatic life has suffered as a result of these
poisonous chemicals contaminating ocean beds, wetlands and marshlands. Once a healthy food
source, seafood and fresh water fish are often dangerous to eat due to mercury and other harmful
and deadly chemicals found in randomly tested fish and seafood. (Painter 2017) Sally brings up an
excellent point when the says that toxins have leached out of facilities and factories because when
most think of going green they think how to save energy. But going green is not just about saving
energy; it is about making a cleaner environment at the same time. What is sustainable design? For
the past, the art of creating a building was much more simple due to the fact that there were not as
many requirement on size, efficiency, and economy. There was not a care in the world on what
effects these buildings would have on the future civilization. But in the world today, the
construction industry has become much more concerned with what the future holds. According to
Daniel Vallero and Chris Brasier, sustainable design or Green Design is Green design encompasses
numerous ways to improve processes and products to make them more efficient from an
environmental standpoint. (Vallero, Brasier) In other words when designing a building

The Reality of War in John Knowles A Separate Peace
In his book A Separate Peace John Knowles communicates what war really is. He uses a number
of complex characters in a very complicated plot in order to convey the harsh, sad, cruel,
destructive forces of war. The Characters Gene and Finny are used as opposing forces in a struggle
between that cold reality of war that is World War II in this story and a separate peace. A peace
away from the real war and all of the terrible things that come with it. Through their relationship,
that is a struggle on both sides from the beginning, Knowles establishes the reality of war in all of
its essence.
Gene Forrester is established as the force of reality which is the war. This idea is ... Show more

Money is very easy to earn but rather hard to spend, because there isn t very much to buy. . .The
war will always be fought very far away from America and it will never end. Nothing in America
stands still for very long, including the people, who are always either leaving or on leave. (32)
This is what Gene stands for in the story of A Separate Peace. Gene appears to omnisciently
understand the reality of war and how it effects people. Throughout the entire story Gene is used
to bring in the destructive reality of war into the everyday life at Devon High School where there
is an attempt to create, and exist in, a separate peace.
There is however quite an opposition to this reality known by Gene that is headed by Gene s best
friend Finny. Finny has his own reality. Finny displays this reality throughout the whole book just
as Gene acts throughout the whole book. From the perspective of the narrator, Gene, Finny s
world is one where there are a lot of things that Finny does to try and substitute for the real war.
This world or reality that Finny creates and exists in is the separate peace spoken of earlier.
Finny first begins to create this separate peace with games. Because Finny can t face the reality of
the real war these games are representative of the war. Finny makes the rules so that he can exist in
these games as a force that is indomitable. The first game Finny invents is The Super Suicide

Media Plan For Izze Sparkling Soda
Instructor assignment #4: Media Plan for IZZE Sparkling Soda
The media we chose to put an emphasis on is radio, Internet and cable television. The percentages
for each are radio 40%, Internet 30% and cable television 30%. For radio we have strategically
chosen to place our advertisements on the weekday morning drive time from 6am to 10am and on
weekends from 7pm to midnight. The vehicles chosen for Internet are the websites iTunes, ESPN
and iHeart Radio. For Cable Televisionservices we have chosen the vehicles Spike TV, Food
Network and ION.
There are numerous reasons why we decided to put the largest emphasis on radio. For one, our
demographic is males 18 34 and according to the PowerPoint, we learned that males at that age are a

According to the United Nations Report, 1.5 billion Internet users are male, while 1.3 billion
are female. This statistic supports our decision for choosing this specific medium. In Media
Mark, we searched both Other Regular Soft Drinks and Sparkling Water. We compared the two
reports and selected the highest reach/index numbers. The vehicles we found specific to our
target audience are iTunes, which has a reach of 35,600,000 and an index number of 135, ESPN
with a reach of 36,455,000 and an index number of 111 and iHeart Radio, which had a reach of
12,771,000 and an index number of 117. Other websites that we considered but did not choose
were Pandora (46,726,000/109) and NFL (17,898,000/110). From this research we were able to
determine that our target had an interest in music and sports. This further supports our decision to
place a larger emphasis on radio.
From the PowerPoint, we learned that Cable Television is a highly persuasive medium because
it offers sight, sound and motion. It also reaches a large audience and specifically captures the
attention of our hard to reach target (males 18 34). We chose Cable Television over other
mediums because it provides narrowcasting opportunities to focus in on specific targets. The
vehicles that we chose within this medium are Spike TV with a reach of 35,794,000 and an index
number of 120, Food Network with a reach of 56,594,000 and an

Supernatural Figures In Religion
Every culture has their own way of believing. As defined by the Supernatural Dictionary,
Supernatural figures are defined as: events or things that cannot be explained by nature or
science and that are assumed to come from beyond or to originate from otherworldly forces
(Supernatural Dictionary). In cultures specifically, they are worshipped in hope for a miracle or
wish. Supernatural figures like Japanese kami, Middle Eastern Genies, and European angels are
all looked upon for serving god, however they are approached differently and have different rituals.
Each supernatural figure is intended to represent a world beyond the natural. Although they each
were first seen as spirits of god, they also all obtained negative images of evil.... Show more content

Believers say they may emerge from darkness or even come disguised as animals. Like kami,
angels rose were intended to be messengers from god. The Bible is a key informative for
explaining angels. The Bibe explains the different interactions and their purpose as messengers
from god. Some researchers believe that they were created before the six days outlined in Genesis

The truth, so simple yet so difficult. We associate truth with facts and reality, but sometimes reach
a grey area when defining a true story. A journalist s job is not only to report facts and data to the
public, but also to tell the story. Now I am not saying journalism and storytelling are synonymous;
journalists are not just simply storytellers. Journalists gather, assess, create, and present news and
information. They use a dynamic form of storytelling, a journalistic form. Journalists are enablers,
allowing the public to be free and self governing.

Persuasive Speech About Singlish
II. Introduction
George Carlin, a Grammy winning American stand up comedian, actor, author, and philosopher,
once said, Meow means woof in cat. This means, any language, has a purpose and an impact on the
people or things around us. With the rise of many new and different languages like Esperanto and
Singlish, many people have mixed opinions about these languages. In the portfolio, I will be
tacking the whole issue on Singlish, whether it should be allowed or not, since it is related to our
society and because of the rising use of Singlish in this generation.
I was inspired to write and research on this topic as my school had an English week where we were
taught more about English and the languages around us. One of them was Singlish. ... Show more

Educating the public
When using Singlish in school, I recommend that students and teachers exercise control while using
Singlish. They need to know when is the right time and the right place to use Singlish. Also, they
cannot speak Singlish all the time. They need to know the difference between acceptable/ standard
English and Singlish. Just like how they know the difference between Chinese and English. When
greeting someone, for instance, one must use Standard English or it will seen rude and such habits
are negative in the working world when they grow up.
When we live in a multicultural nation, a colloquial language like Singlish is unavoidable. We can
only teach what should be used. I recommend that talks and activities should be carried out drawing
the line between Singlish and Standard English. I do recognize that these programmes would not
ban Singlish, but banning Singlish is not wanted but in fact only needed to be known. Once again,
we only need everyone to know the time to use Singlish.

Case Study on Nol
Introduction
In November 1997, the acquisition of APL by NOL was successful. As compared to the larger
US based APL; NOL was a small Singapore firm. Through this acquisition, it appeared that NOL
was ready to become an industry leader in the shipping industry. Thus this acquisition is a strategy
through which NOL buys a controlling, 100 per cent, interest in APL with the intent of making the
acquired firm a subsidiary business within its portfolio. Thus APL became a wholly owned
subsidiary of Singapore based NOL, a global transportation and logistics company engaged in
shipping and related businesses.
Below is the study of the problems and strategies that NOL faced or is facing during the acquisition
and integration of APL. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although both financial and strategic controls are important, on a relative basis financial controls
are vital to headquarters evaluation of each SBU; strategic controls are also critical to the
headquarters efforts to determine whether the business has formed an effective portfolio of
businesses and whether those businesses are being successfully managed.
Sharing competencies among units within an SBU is an important characteristic of the SBU form
of the multi divisional structure. The drawback to the SBU structure is that multi faceted
businesses often have difficulties in communicating this complex business model to stockholders.
Strategic Leadership and Style
NOL appointed a foreigner, Denmark national Flemming Jacobs as its new CEO to run the
business in June 1999. Flemmings was a respected veteran from the shipping industry s leading
firm Maersk.
Strategic leadership is the ability to anticipate, envision, maintain flexibility and empower others to
create strategic change as necessary. The ability to attract and then manage human capital may be
the most critical of the strategic leader s skills, especially in light of the fact that not being able to
fill key positions with talented human capital constrains the firm growth.
A firm s ability to achieve a competitive advantage and earn above returns is compromised when
strategic leader fail to respond appropriately and quickly to changes in the complex global
environment. The inability

Performance Management And Performance Appraisal
1.Introduction
1.1.Performance management and performance appraisal
The definition of the term performance management varies in different literatures. As
Hutchinson(2013) summed up, combined with Den Harton s theory(2004), it is a continuous
process which links individual and team objectives with organizational goals by measure and
improve employee s skill and performance. According to Armstrong (2012), human resource
management aims at making sure the organization has the most talented, skilled and engaged people
in order to attain its goals. In this context, performance management is one staple practice helping
managers identifying and retaining most competent employees as well as correcting poor
performance.
In a typical and effective process of performance management, as demonstrated in Figure 2.1,
performance appraisal is not the only but a vital element because it is the activity which evaluate
the outcome of the work, recognize the achievement and weaknesses and give employees and
managers a straightforward result on these(Armstrong, 2009, Hutchinson, 2013). From a modern
perspective, performance appraisal covers more areas not only on what have been achieved but also
on the attitude and contribution of the operator (Hutchinson, 2013), which enhance the functions of
identifying training needs.

Economic disparity is the economic difference between people or countries. The reason why
Walkabout relates to economic disparity is because it involves people from two different

  • 2. Surgical Techniques How many people have ever wondered about the advances in medical technology and procedures throughout the ages? I am going to talk about these advances in medical technology and procedures. Through the centuries our knowledge of human anatomy and surgical techniques has grown greatly. Surgeries began with techniques that sound rather barbaric. Since then we have advanced so much that we are now able to perform heart transplants, eye surgery, and many other medical procedures. Our knowledge of anatomy, surgical techniques, and ways to keep people alive have vastly grown. I am, going to cut open and dissect the history of surgical techniques, anathestics, and human anatomy throughout the Stone Age, Middle Ages, sixteenth century, nineteenth... Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the lens of your eye and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is used to treat the clouding of the normally clear lens of your eye (cataract). (Mayo Clinic 2013). This shows that cataract surgery is a common laser surgery that improves vision greatly. Lasers were again used for a keyhole surgery in 2008 to treat brain cancer. To do this surgeons use one or two lasers to cut a hole in the patients head to help cure brain cancer. Medical surgery technics have advanced greatl, improving society, and saving ... • 3. A Lesson Before Dying By Ernest Gaines A hero is not only someone with superpowers but can be anyone. It can be anyone like you or me. A hero is someone who is willing to stand up for other people. The book, A Lesson Before Dying, takes place in Louisiana and is about an innocent Black man convicted and sent to the electric chair. In the story there are real people that Ernest Gaines alludes to. Ernest Gaines makes an allusion to Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson. Beside these two, Mamie Till also stepped up and was audacious. They were all fearless and gave hope to many other people because of what they were doing. These heroes took a stand against society and changed the world for everyone. A hero isn t just Superman but someone who stands up for what they believe in and is a sense of hope for everyone. Jackie Robinson was the first African AmericanMajor League Baseball player. In the article, Robinson was calm and knew how to ignore the racism. Robinson didn t fight back when he was confronted with racism (www.biography.com/jackie robinson). Jackie Robinson changed baseball by ending racial segregation, which was allowing other African Americans to play in the major leagues. Jackie Robinson succeeded in putting the prejudice and racial strife aside, and showed everyone what a talented player he was (www.biography.com/jackie robinson). Jackie put aside his difference and proved to everyone that he was no different than white players. Jackie was calm when confronted with racism. He didn t fight or attack ... There are many unknown factors which cannot be found within the pages of the Gregson vs Gilbert documents, or found through archaic evidence. It is uncertain, for instance, where exactly the ship was located when the slaves were thrown overboard, and the names of the slaves whose lives were lost during the incident. Philip clarifies this in her interview with Patricia Saunders when she states, There is no marker. We don t have the bones. We don t have the Tombstones (Saunders). Gilbert and you reintroduce those emotions and feelings that were removed. • 5. Social And Economic Impacts Of The Industrial Revolution Introduction In response to the drastic social and economic impacts of the industrial revolution in the United States during the mid 19th century, labor union were created in order to facilitate fair negotiations on the behalf of workers with their employers in regard to work related difficulties such as pay, working conditions, along with other amenities. Article 23 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 following the end of the Second World War identifies the ability to organize trade unions as a fundamental human right. On a more federal level, the United States Congress also began passing laws targeted at industries to better working conditions as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Team owners gave the NBPA recognition in 1957; however, due to a lack of interest from the players and a lack general organization, the NBPA was not taken seriously by anyone, and as a result did not accomplish anything. This all began to change in the 1960 s and 70 s, as the dynamic combination of growing fan interest and the emergence of network television transformed sports leagues and individual teams into valuable business enterprises. Naturally, the players wanted a greater share of the expanding wealth; to do so, they had to do it the same ways blue collar industrial workers did: through collective bargaining with the help of labor unions, or in this case, the National Basketball Players Association. Previously dysfunctional and inconsequential, the NBPA turned to Harvard Law graduate Lawrence Larry Fleisher, an attorney and sports agent. Hired on as a general counsel in 1962, Fleisher negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement in all of professional sports in 1967, securing pensions, minimum salaries, and disability pay for its members. Over the years, the NBPA grew in power as the NBA grew in popularity. With new massive network television deals, apparel contracts, advertisement air times, ticket sales, concessions, to name a few sources of the teams revenue, how to divide the Association s basketball related income (BRI) has remained a central topic of debate between players and owners. Question 2 Part (c) Report on the unique characteristic of qualitative and quantitative research strategy Quantitative and qualitative researches are based on different paradigms. Qualitative research strategy focuses mainly on words, human behaviour in the cultural context, attitudes and life experiences rather than numerical data (IPA Research Strategy. 2010). It focuses on collecting information to confirm how the variables interrelate. It is subjective and always relies on the interpretation of the situation of the individual undertaking the study. As for the quantitative it put emphasis on specific standard or numerical data and applies different kind of statistical analysis. The researcher always stays independent, apart and uses random sampling to prevent personal prejudices to misrepresent the results which can easily be generalized (IPA Research Method, 2010). Both strategies have their own characteristics. Table 1 below illustrates different characteristic of the two strategies (H.J. Streubert D.R. Carpenter, 1999). • 7. Adolf Hitlers Life The Early Life of Adolf Hitler Many individuals all over the world know of Adolf Hitler and his terrible deeds. They know of his reasonability to the deaths of over 6 million innocent Jews. Many of these individuals believe that Adolf Hitler was a hateful man, with no heart or compassion. Only knowing the history of the Holocaust and World War II, that statement is true. But what would a man go through to end up heartless, compassionless, and evil? Adolf Hitler had a family, a childhood, and a personal history that not many individuals know about. His father pushed him to follow in his footsteps and become a civil servant. Adolf did not want to follow in his father s footsteps. He wanted to attend classical school and follow his dreams of becoming an artist. Against Adolf s will, his father sent him to technical high school in the city of Linz. Hitler s first year in technical school went horribly. Hitler was a country boy in a school full of city boys. These children looked down on him, assuming that since he was from the country he was unintelligent. He was very lonely and extremely unhappy his first year, resulting in poor grades. Adolf had a great resentment to his father for sending him to technical school. Hitler explained in his book Mein Kampf that he thought that once my father saw what little progress I was making at the [technical school] he would let me devote myself to the happiness I dreamed of. (the history place) Many arguments happened between Hitler and his father. Hitler argued he did not want to spend his life at a desk that his dreams were to be an artist. Yet his father did not listen and sent him back to the technical school. This caused a bitter struggle between Adolf and his father. Adolf wanted to do everything opposite of his father. This is where Adolf s interest in German Nationalism arose and quickly became an obsession. Alois had worked as an Austrian Imperial Customs agent and expressed loyalty to Austria. Seeing his father express his loyalty to Austria, Adolf began to express loyalty to the German Kaiser. Hitler and his friends used the German greeting Heil , and liked to sing the German anthem Deutschland Uber Alles . The constant struggle with his father would soon end. Alternatively, modifications in mechanical properties of natural and synthetic biomaterials can be introduced through enzymatic, physical, or chemical crosslinking. Thermosetting resins (or thermosets) play an important role in industry because of their high flexibility for tailoring preferred ultimate properties leading to high modulus, strength, durability with thermal and chemical resistances provided by high cross linking density. In view of the fact that being prepared from phenol and formaldehyde and having desirable characteristics and dimensional stability along with high resistance against various solvents, acids and water, phenolic resins are broadly used as commodity and engineered materials in transportation industry showing the versatility for having potential to cope with challenges of advanced technology. Phenolic resins can be synthesized under both acidic and alkaline conditions [48]. The Influence of Saturday Night Live On August 29th, 2008 Senator John McCain announced his decision of electing Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential Candidate. Each soldier was supposed to receive 1Вј pounds of beef,1ВЅ pounds of flour,5 ounces of liquor, and 5 ounces of vinegar daily. If it was possible, flour was baked into hard biscuits or bread. Sutlers were civilian merchants that followed the soldiers around, selling their wares at ridiculously high prices. For example, Hyson Tea was $3.00 per pound, and the average soldier s pay was $5.00 a month. Luckily, the sutlers offered credit for up to a third of a soldier s pay. This credit, however, let debt to accumulate tremendously. Some soldiers tried hunting, but to no avail. During the war, the government relied on contractors to provide the soldiers with food. • 16. Racial Discrimination In America special arrangement of conditions prompted the subjugation of individuals who seem to look similar. The idea of race gives reason as to why people are denied rights and opportunities, especially since the economy was dependent on slavery. Racial injustices have been considered natural and justified. There s a lot of overlap between groups. There isn t a single gene, trait, or characteristic that distinguishes all the members of one racefrom all the members of another. Again, this is because categories are socially constructed, so there are inconsistencies in the way different groups are defined. If you change criteria, people fall into different groups. The idea that raceisn t biological goes against one of our most fundamental assumptions: that there are meaningful, natural divisions between groups of people. Certainly people look different, but as it turns out, appearances can be deceiving. You can t draw any conclusions about those groups beyond what you used to sort people in the first place. Biologically speaking, traits are inherited non concordantly, which means they are inherited independently, rather than packaged together. If you know one thing about someone, it doesn t necessarily tell you anything else about them, so it doesn t make sense to talk about group race characteristics. we must overcome centuries of inequality before we can unmake it pretending that race doesn t exist or matter is not the same as treating people equally. According to china s ministry of environmental protection 9 out of 10 cities have such robust developed economy that they fail the countries pollution test. Research shows how someone who has been emotionally abused develops personality disorders, has low self esteem, and even has suicidal thoughts. Although there has been research that provides a general idea of emotional abuse and its effects, the research should take a deeper look at how the smallest details affect someone. My position differs from those who claim they know the true definition of what emotional abuse is. It doesn t include parents or abusers who claim to know how to define it. Emotional abuse should be looked at with a magnifying glass because the smallest details are what allow people to see how emotional abuse affects a person s behavior and mental state, and the smaller details allow people to give a clearer definition of what emotional abuse is. Although there have been numerous researches done to define what emotional abuse is, there are many more factors that researchers haven t found yet. • 25. Reactance Window Drying Reactance Window drying: Reactance Technology is a novel drying system. It uses circulating water at atmospheric pressure as a means to carry thermal energy to material to be dehydrated.[2] Infrared Zone Drying: It uses infrared energy applied to a thin film of product in a series of zones. This allows product to be maintained at a low temperatureto avoid damage while in its liquid state. DRYING FUNDAMENTALS Drying involves the removal of moisture in thermal drying; this is achieved by give the heatto the product. The heat increases the vapor pressure of the moisture in the product above that of the surrounding air. Pressure and thermal cause the moisture, liquid and vapor, to move to the surface of the product. Evaporationtakes place and water vapor is transferred to the surrounding air. This air may become saturated but the process of drying continues if this moist air is replaced by less saturated air. In a crop there is a combination of free and bound moisture. Free moisture is water that can move through the product in an unrestricted way. Its movement is not dependent on the internal structure of the crop. The vaporization evaporation process is at a maximum when there is sufficient free water in the product to replace that evaporated at its surface. As this moisture is evaporated the moisture content of the product falls and the product temperature is close to the wet bulb temperature of the drying air. Dealing with rhetorical appeals, I feel that Sam Jacobs leans more on pathos than using logos and ethos to appeal to the audience. He states a lot about the hurricane and how it affected people and uses that to say that electronic print news covered more of it because you can have a multitude of news outlets covering the same story, each saying something different, but as an overall stating the same idea. A direct quote from his essay talks of the contribution that the citizens made saying, Armed with cell phones and laptops, regular citizens relayed critical news updates in a rapidly developing crisis, often before traditional journalists were even on the scene (115).... Dan Gilmore is telling us that people are often not the most reliable sources to use, but they re using it to help everyone out. After waiting in hiding at the location for some time, George showed up, and ultimately had to shoot Lennie. George did this because he loved lennie. He knew that Curley was on his way, and that he was armed. If Lennie had fallen into Curley s hands, I am almost 100% positive that he would have suffered at Curley s hand. He would have died slowly, and painfully. George loved Lennie so much, that he took matters into his own hands, and killed Lennie. When reading this part, some of my classmates were against what George had done. But I see why. I look at it this way. If I had someone who I loved, I would save them, and sacrifice my own freedom. If anyone did what George did in today s time, they would be sent to jail. But if you really truly did love that person, the sacrifice would be worth it. The choices that both Lennie and George made in the final chapters of the book reflect their character. Lennie was a giant of a man, with immense physical strength, but very little mental strength. He could be describe as a gentle giant , for lack of a better phrase. He did have several incidents where his strength got the best of him, but he was a tender, kind man, even though he had the physical capability to harm almost anyone with ease. George is an able bodied man, who could be on his own, working to achieve his dream of owning his own land. However, he instead chooses to stay with Lennie, and look after him the best that he can. The Arts and Crafts Movement Essay The Arts and Craft movement was a social and artistic movement, which began in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century and continued into the twentieth spreading to continental Europe and the USA. In the United States, the Arts and Crafts Movement took on a distinctively more bourgeois flavor. While the European movement tried to recreate the virtuous world of craft labor that was being destroyed by industrialization, Americans tried to establish a new source of virtue to replace heroic craft production: the tasteful middle class home. They thought that the simple but refined aesthetics of Arts and Crafts decorative arts would ennoble the new experience of industrial consumerism, making individuals more rational and society more harmonious. In short, the American Arts and Crafts Movement was the aesthetic counterpart of its contemporary political movement: Progressivism. Art Nouveau, 1890 1914, explores a new style in the visual arts and architecture that developed in Europe and North America at the end of the nineteenth century. • 34. The Ethical Issues Of Payola Since its beginnings, the recording industry has suffered from behavior that ranges from the unethical to worse downright corrupt. Artists have had their music stolen, royalties shorted, and have been lied to about the potential for riches and fame. In addition, record labels have tried to take shortcuts to profitability through scams, fraud and even bribery. Two ethical issues continue to persist within the industry. The first ethical issue is Payola, the practice of a compensating a media outlet, such as a radio or TV station, for playing an artist s work by the artist s record label. The second issue is illegal sampling, the practice of taking pieces of an artist s music, without proper permission, in order to create a new song by another musician. • 38. Computers And Other Types Of Electronics For ages the question has been debated, to what do humans owe our thinking abilities and can computers and other types of electronics have the capacity to think? Over millions of years humans have developed the capacity to think critically and to have higher intelligent thinking than other animals. The humanbrain has evolved to have a prefrontal cortex which is responsible for executive functioning. These functions include responding to complex problems, maintaining a set behavior, planning, problem solving, judging a situation, and making good, intellectual choices. With developments such as these higher functions, humans have the ability to fully comprehend situations with their minds, and can act at their own free will to make choices, unlike computers. Computers must be acted upon in order to think or to search for an answer. Computers are an invention created by man. They must be programmed to something, they do not exist or act without the assistance of man. Since computers are not able to think on their own and must be programmed by man, a computer should not be considered to know how to think. Thinking is complex in that it requires you to ponder a choice and for you to comprehend and analyze it to make a final decision. To think is to contemplate various scenarios and situations and reason. In order to think you must have an initial thoughtor idea that was triggered by some type of stimuli. By examining the works of Much Ado about Nothing, Dr. Horribles Sing Along Blog, and Candide we can see that only through comedy do we make ourselves the superiors of absurdity and therefore we need tragedy to keep the balance between laughter and torment sustainable. In the version of John Whedons, much ado parts of tragedy are combined with elements of comedy, which makes this version an acceptable light comedy. Most of the new recruits entering the ranks are young men and women between the ages of 17 and 20 years old; they are America s sons and daughters. • 51. Persuasive Speech About Singlish II. Introduction George Carlin, a Grammy winning American stand up comedian, actor, author, and philosopher, once said, Meow means woof in cat. This means, any language, has a purpose and an impact on the people or things around us. With the rise of many new and different languages like Esperanto and Singlish, many people have mixed opinions about these languages. In the portfolio, I will be tacking the whole issue on Singlish, whether it should be allowed or not, since it is related to our society and because of the rising use of Singlish in this generation. I was inspired to write and research on this topic as my school had an English week where we were taught more about English and the languages around us. One of them was Singlish. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is represented in the Acronym Educating the public When using Singlish in school, I recommend that students and teachers exercise control while using Singlish. They need to know when is the right time and the right place to use Singlish. Also, they cannot speak Singlish all the time. They need to know the difference between acceptable/ standard English and Singlish. Just like how they know the difference between Chinese and English. When greeting someone, for instance, one must use Standard English or it will seen rude and such habits are negative in the working world when they grow up. When we live in a multicultural nation, a colloquial language like Singlish is unavoidable. We can only teach what should be used. I recommend that talks and activities should be carried out drawing the line between Singlish and Standard English. I do recognize that these programmes would not ban Singlish, but banning Singlish is not wanted but in fact only needed to be known. Once again, we only need everyone to know the time to use Singlish. 2. Perspective of these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thus this acquisition is a strategy through which NOL buys a controlling, 100 per cent, interest in APL with the intent of making the acquired firm a subsidiary business within its portfolio. Thus APL became a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore based NOL, a global transportation and logistics company engaged in shipping and related businesses. Below is the study of the problems and strategies that NOL faced or is facing during the acquisition and integration of APL. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although both financial and strategic controls are important, on a relative basis financial controls are vital to headquarters evaluation of each SBU; strategic controls are also critical to the headquarters efforts to determine whether the business has formed an effective portfolio of businesses and whether those businesses are being successfully managed. Sharing competencies among units within an SBU is an important characteristic of the SBU form of the multi divisional structure. The drawback to the SBU structure is that multi faceted businesses often have difficulties in communicating this complex business model to stockholders. Strategic Leadership and Style NOL appointed a foreigner, Denmark national Flemming Jacobs as its new CEO to run the business in June 1999. Flemmings was a respected veteran from the shipping industry s leading firm Maersk. Strategic leadership is the ability to anticipate, envision, maintain flexibility and empower others to create strategic change as necessary. The ability to attract and then manage human capital may be the most critical of the strategic leader s skills, especially in light of the fact that not being able to fill key positions with talented human capital constrains the firm growth. A firm s ability to achieve a competitive advantage and earn above returns is compromised when strategic leader fail to respond appropriately and quickly to changes in the complex global environment. According to Armstrong (2012), human resource management aims at making sure the organization has the most talented, skilled and engaged people in order to attain its goals.
