With the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Great Britain became the dominant power in North America. However, having taken over French colonial possessions, the British were not welcomed by many of the First Nations who had been allied with the French (review Pontiac’s War). In order to establish peaceful relationships with the First Nations (and the French settlers), the British negotiated with the First Nations that resulted in the Royal Proclamation of 1763 – which ended the hostilities, for the most part, between the British and the First Nations. Avoid writing “you” when speaking to the reader. It’s best to speak collectively, such as “We can all learn from this example” or “We as a nation must take steps….”
Use formal style, tone, and diction. Avoid slang, casual language, broad generalizations, and contractions in most cases. (See Lab 3 below for an overview of academic language.)
Include at least three direct quotations from the sources and paraphrase other statements. (Direct quotations are when you place quotation marks around sentences that are word-for-word by a source. With the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Great Britain became the dominant power in North America. However, having taken over French colonial possessions, the British were not welcomed by many of the First Nations who had been allied with the French (review Pontiac’s War). In order to establish peaceful relationships with the First Nations (and the French settlers), the British negotiated with the First Nations that resulted in the Royal Proclamation of 1763 – which ended the hostilities, for the most part, between the British and the First Nations. This document, the Proclamation, is an enormously important document in Canadian history and its significance reverberates into modern days as First Nations continue to rely on the document when making legal claims about land ownership.

1. What is communication apprehension? What are some of the ways the book suggests to deal with this apprehension? Do you agree or disagree that preparation is one of the most significant factors in reducing communication apprehension? Why? (10 points)
Communication apprehension is one kind of fear of speaking in public. There are two most fundamental principles in combating communication apprehension: addressing substantive issues to which you are committed and being well prepared. In addition, there are some other ways to deal with it: Develop a positive attitude, practice your speech, anticipate the speech situation, practice active listening, and exercise fro relaxation. I would like to agree with that. Because of the face that there is no better psychological defense for dealing with communication apprehension than honestly being able to say to yourself that you are well prepared. Reminding yourself of your careful preparation can be reassuring and even liberating as you grapple with feelings of anxiety.
2. Name at least five problems that audience members experience when listening to a public speech. Give an example of each (10 points)
(1) Passivity syndrome. Perhaps we feel that we already know all there is to know about listening. Or maybe we feel that the primary responsibility for good listening rests with the speakers. But if we listen passively, we give up control.
(2) Mental games. On political talk shows, we frequently see speakers interrupt or shout down those who disagree with their views, apparently thinking this is how you “win” a debate. Although these sorts of “debates” may be entertaining to some, they are hardly models of effective and constructive listening.
(3) Short attention span. Modern technology has significantly changed the way we listen and what we listen to. In the classroom, teachers may accommodate our shorter attention spans by stopping for discussion, show video clips, or staging a group exercise. During a public speech, however, we would be surprised if a speaker were to stop in the middle of the take to ask us question or to break us into small groups for discussion.
(4) Stereotyping. Stereotyping can greatly interfere with our ability to listen effectively. For example, white television viewers who watch a stereotyped comic portrayal of black people are later more
likely to judge a black defendant guilty of an assault.
(5) Distractions. In some cases, visual images may function as powerful influences on our ideas and behaviors without our even being aware of their impact. When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech in August 1963, the distractions were many.

Imagine you are a new attorney with a prestigious law firm working in Washington, D.C., and you must write a three-page essay on the topic of race in America that will be submitted to the Supreme Court. You will argue whether racism is or is no longer a significant issue for most Americans. After all, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed over 50 years ago and Barack Obama was elected president in 2008 and re-elected in 2012. Because you have been hired to do this work, you personally may or may not agree with the perspective you will argue. In fact, you have no choice which side to argue because this will be randomly assigned to you.

Essay requirements:
The length of the essay should be approximately three pages, double-spaced, approximately 750 - 880 words. Please limit the essay to no more than four and one-half pages, or 1,250 words maximum.
Your essay should include an introduction, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your body paragraphs should follow the enhanced PIE structure we are learning in this class. (See Lab 2 for the 7-step process to building a perfect body paragraph below.)
Use at least three trustworthy sources to support your thesis / claim. You may use the sources posted in the Essay 1 – Racism folder in Canvas. (The term source means an article, a study, a book, a video, an essay, or other similar writings that offer ideas and research related to a topic.) Feel free to conduct additional research as well.
Avoid the first person use of “I” or “me” in the essay. This keeps the focus on the issue and not on you. Avoid “I believe” and “I think” and other similar terms since your claim should be based on facts and evidence rather than your opinion. (See Lab 3 below for more on this.)
Avoid writing “you” when speaking to the reader. It’s best to speak collectively, such as “We can all learn from this example” or “We as a nation must take steps….”
Use formal style, tone, and diction. Avoid slang, casual language, broad generalizations, and contractions in most cases. (See Lab 3 below for an overview of academic language.)
Include at least three direct quotations from the sources and paraphrase other statements. (Direct quotations are when you place quotation marks around sentences that are word-for-word by a source. Paraphrasing means writing a source’s ideas in your own words.) Be careful not to quote a source for too long in the essay. Intersperse quotations with paraphrases of what the source has to say. (See Lab 4 below for a lesson in how to integrate quotations into your essay.)
Please include a Works Cited to list all sources cited in the essay. List the sources in Works Cited in alphabetical order. If you have an author name, list it at the start of the entry by last name, followed by first name. (See .

Annotated Bibliography
An annotated bibliography is a list of sources you are consulting for research accompanied by formal notes (or annotations) written about each source.
An annotated bibliography serves several purposes:
· It allows you to review the materials you have and see what information you still need.
· It lets you synthesize the information you have gathered to further develop
your argument.
· It helps you begin to prepare your sources in the style required for your Works
Cited page.
· It helps other researchers understand what is being published on your topic.
Using the articles you have found on your own, prepare your own annotated bibliography.
