In the 1980s, Energy Systems Italy designed their first PV systems for navigation aids and railways, installing many standalone systems along the Italian coast and railway network. In the 1990s, they expanded to installing standalone systems for obstacles lights and telecom systems in Italy and the Middle East. They also installed their first integrated solar roof in Sicily in 1996. The 1990s saw over 500 PV systems installed on private and public buildings. In the 2000s, public support for solar electricity production supported growth in building rooftop applications. They also conducted R&D into hydrogen production using solar power and installed prototypes. New PV system controls were also developed during this time period. Recently, Energy Systems Italy has focused on multi-MWp systems
