Managing Environmental and Social Risks
Long-term business results ensured
Financial institutions are increasingly factoring social and environmental risks
into their project investment decisions. According to a recent FTSE4Good report,
there has been an almost four-fold growth in responsible investments over the last
decade to $10.1tn. Assessing social and environmental impacts is quickly becoming
one of the core criteria used by project and export investors to inform their invest-
ment decisions, recognizing that managing social and environmental risk of invest-
ments makes sound financial sense.

Managing Environmental and Social Risks
Sweco has developed considerable expertise in reviewing and managing Environmental
and Social (E&S) Risk of projects as third party reviewers in line with international stand-
ards, such as the IFC Performance Standards. Our commercial approach to risk manage-
ment means that our focus is on the long-term profitability of the proposed investment
through reduction of future social and environmental costs.
As our client you can benefit from:
• A dialogue based approach to the E&S
review process that is planned in close
cooperation with the client and the
promoter. Our main interest is to ensure
that the proposed project will be profit-
able in the long run and this is best
done when the various perspectives are
integrated into the design of the E&S
review.
• A cost-effective assessment of the
proposed project’s compliance with
relevant international standards such
as the Equator Principles, World Bank
Safeguards or the IFC Performance
Standards. Assessments will include
practical advice on potential measures
needed for bringing the project in line
with requirements .
• An engineering company, where you
can expect a solid technical foundation
and a practical approach to infrastruc-
ture, construction and environmental
projects. Our key technical expertise
areas are structured along our four
business lines: Planning & Design, Water
& Energy, Testing & Monitoring and
Transportation & Mobility.
• A broad experience assessing E&S risks
in over 80 countries and a range of
sectors based on over 300 E&S reviews.
The sectors we have covered include
energy and renewable energy, industry,
transport, utilities, agriculture and food
processing.
• A fast track access to a global network
of qualified social and environmental
consultants. We can draw on nearly
14,500 professionals employed within
the Sweco group and supplement with
specialists among our associates and
consultants from our CV database with
6,000+ freelance consultants.
• Timely and correct reporting within
very tight deadlines and subjected to
our ISO 9001 certified quality manage-
ment system. Any E&S assignment will
be managed by our dedicated team of
environmental and social experts.

Cruise terminal in Jamaica
E&S review process for EKF - Danish Export
Credit Agency
Sweco carried out an E&S review of a pro-
posed cruise terminal in a small harbour on
Jamaica’s north coast where the conditions
are right for luminous phytoplankton forma-
tions, giving it its other name - “Glistening
Waters”. The main issue was effects of
dredging activities located close to sensitive
coral habitats. EKF benefitted from Sweco’s
ability to mobilise Dutch coastal engineer-
ing experts from Sweco Holland to fully
ascertain the environmental impacts of
dredging activities. EKF agreed with the
promoter on a set of mitigation measures,
benefiting both EKF and the promoter.
