Hemp has long been known to extract heavy metals from soil. Now that Pennsylvania has enacted the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program, research is commencing to prove hemp’s potential on abandoned coal mine land at a fraction of the cost of more traditional remediation methods.

Imagine a world where we are no longer
decimating our land, poisoning our air and
water with the extraction and consumption of
fossil fuels. A world where we start making a
positive impact on our environment and
reversing climate change by the cultivation of
hemp. Where we stop needlessly destroying
trees and stop filling our landfills with non
biodegradable products. Imagine a world where
we not only live in harmony with our
environment by using green energy and also
enjoy a booming economy from our new found
sustainability. Working together we don’t have
to merely imagine it, we will make it reality.

3. Phytoremediation
Hemp makes a premium candidate for
phytoremediation due to high biomass,
long roots and a short life cycle. Hemp
also has a high capability to absorb and
accumulate heavy metals (HMs) lead
(Pb), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), zinc
(Zn), and chromium. Hemp was planted
in the contaminated soils of the
Chernobyl disaster site in the Ukraine,
and it was revealed that the plant can
take up considerable amounts of HMs
from contaminated soil thanks to high
biomass and deep roots. Another
reported study elected hemp as the
best bioaccumulator of Cd out of eight
potential energy crops. In the future,
the brownfields redevelopment
industry may want to consider
phytoremedial hemp as the starting
tool for urban improvement, but
progress does not stop here.

leaving the fiber and hurd viable for industrial products
Hemp is extremely hardy and can withstand harsh conditions
Hemp has an extensive root system and a high biomass
Hemp replenishes nitrogen, aerates soil & is great for erosion control

Proven to remove heavy metals, toxins and purifies water
Can be grown organically and is one of the most efficient
sustainable crops
