The statistics are scary:
1 in 7 young Australians experience mental health condition
Suicide in young Australians is the highest it has been in 10 years
Suicide is the biggest killer of young Australians and accounts for the deaths of more young people than car accidents
For husband and wife team (and Homestead for Youth founders), Carla and Marty Fadelli, these statistics are unacceptable. They became frustrated with these statistics and especially from experiencing, at first hand, the gaps in the systems for young people, placed in the bracket of “able to help themselves” yet clearly not able to do so.
So, they decided to do something and change the story associated with these statistics. In 2009, recently married, Carla and Marty started looking after teenagers and young people by providing emergency, residential and long term living arrangements.
By providing young people with a safe refuge and a home, Carla, a registered psychologist saw how more relaxed and open they were with her therapy. This started their innovative approach (link to Our approach) to youth mental health, and in 2014, established Homestead for Youth at their parents’ 5 acre property in the Swan Valley.
The H4Y story today…
In 2016, the suicide epidemic in the Peel region of Western Australia drove Homestead for Youth to move their now farm home base to Meelon.
At this 148 acres farm home, we are changing the story, day by day, one young person at a time.

Episode 28 - Peter Wallerstein, Marine Animal Rescue
Peter Wallerstein first coordinated international whale protection campaigns in the icy and treacherous waters of the Bering Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. Since that time, he has facilitated over 6,500 rescues of marine animals, including a host of endangered species from Leatherback Turtles to Guadalupe fur seals. Peter has had persistent creativity in devising hands-on safe and effective techniques to rescue these animals, and his quick on-site response time in emergency situations overcame the objections of county and city officials. In 1985, Peter founded the Whale Rescue Team to establish a local skilled response capability for whales in Southern California. As director of the organization, Peter established a live 24-hour toll-free hotline for reporting marine animals trapped or in distress. Peter’s passion for rescuing whales naturally carried over to all marine wildlife that were sick or injured. In 2007, Whale Rescue Team was renamed Marine Animal Rescue to better reflect his organization’s efforts. In this episode, Peter tells us about his first marine rescue, how often he gets a call, the things he has seen, what he has learned and so much more! Episode 22 – India Le Marinel, Hope for the Animals
India Le Marinel manages the Hope for the Animals program at Mayan Families in Guatemala. She has studied conservation biology and has extensive experience volunteering with animal welfare organizations around the world. As program manager, she works to improve animal welfare in Lake Atitlán through humane education initiatives, low-cost veterinary clinics, and rescuing abandoned or injured animals for adoption. The Hope for the Animals program seeks to change attitudes towards animals in the region and provide care for pets in need.

Episode 28 - Peter Wallerstein, Marine Animal Rescue
Peter Wallerstein first coordinated international whale protection campaigns in the icy and treacherous waters of the Bering Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. Since that time, he has facilitated over 6,500 rescues of marine animals, including a host of endangered species from Leatherback Turtles to Guadalupe fur seals. Peter has had persistent creativity in devising hands-on safe and effective techniques to rescue these animals, and his quick on-site response time in emergency situations overcame the objections of county and city officials. In 1985, Peter founded the Whale Rescue Team to establish a local skilled response capability for whales in Southern California. As director of the organization, Peter established a live 24-hour toll-free hotline for reporting marine animals trapped or in distress. Peter’s passion for rescuing whales naturally carried over to all marine wildlife that were sick or injured. In 2007, Whale Rescue Team was renamed Marine Animal Rescue to better reflect his organization’s efforts. India Le Marinel manages the Hope for the Animals program at Mayan Families in Guatemala. She has studied conservation biology and has extensive experience volunteering with animal welfare organizations around the world. As program manager, she works to improve animal welfare in Lake Atitlán through humane education initiatives, low-cost veterinary clinics, and rescuing abandoned or injured animals for adoption. The Hope for the Animals program seeks to change attitudes towards animals in the region and provide care for pets in need.

Stephen Wells is the executive director of the Animal Legal Defense Fund. Stephen founded and served for six years as the director of ALDF’s successful Animal Law Program, which provides support and resources to ALDF’s law professional and law student members. The ALDF organizes law firms across the country and coordinates pro bono opportunities for attorneys and firms to assist ALDF with its mission of protecting animals. Stephen joined the ALDF in 2000 and eventually took the leadership role of Executive Director in 2007. Arielle Wait is the Deputy Director of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. She began as a volunteer handler at adoption events and quickly became more involved by fostering dogs, coordinating adoptions, and planning adoption events. She worked her way up from Event Team Lead to Program Manager and now Deputy Director, managing the daily operations of Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.

Four transport coordinators shared their experiences and advice. As transport coordinators, they plan routes and find volunteer drivers to transport animals from shelters and rescues to foster homes or other rescues. They recommended starting as a volunteer driver and contacting local shelters about transport needs. Proper preparation is key, like ensuring drivers have supplies and are aware of pickup/drop off times. While stressful at times, they are motivated to help animals in need find new homes.

Have you ever heard of the River Rakitnica Canyon?
Meet Blue and Ice, 3-4 year old Husky mixes. Ice was rescued in October, 2014 with three other dogs that had just been spayed or neutered. Ice was found after being thrown into the Rakitnica Canyon River. Luckily, there was a woman passing by and heard the dogs barking. She immediately called animal rescue, but since they were thrown into a canyon, they could not be easily rescued, so a mountain rescue service was needed. Blue was living on the street in Ilidza, Bosnia, and was being fed by a local rescue. When the local rescue started catching stray dogs, they had to move Blue into a different shelter leaving him in bad living conditions. This is their story of traveling from Bosnia to the United States to find their forever family.

Meet Zephyr and Sabre! A few weeks ago, these two had no idea about each other. They were brought to Orange County Animal Control in Orange, California. Zephyr and Sabre were terrified while they were living in the shelter. As each day passed, they were shaking in fear, terrified for their lives.

Did you know there is another Doobert? It hasn’t always been like this, but that changed this weekend! Meet Pup, also known as Doobert, an eight week old English Pointer, who weighs less than five pounds. Doobert, came from an irresponsible breeder, and was emaciated and deaf. His ribs, spine and hip bones are visible with little body fat and little muscle mass. The breeder gave him no name, because he is deaf. The only name the transport coordinator received was Pup. Doobert was an owner surrender. When they found out he was deaf, they were not comfortable keeping or placing him in a new home. Thanks to Transport4Rescues and all of the volunteers, Doobert made it safe to his new foster and has a Chocolate Lab and Golden Lab foster brothers, a Chocolate Labradoodle foster sister and even met Cedric the cat too!

Meet this week’s trio, Helen, Felix and Girl! Helen is a mostly blind and completely deaf dapple mix. Her parents were ill-equipped to give Helen the care that she needed, and she became an owner surrender. Felix is a small, long haired Dachshund. Felix had once been physically abused, including being thrown against a wall. Daisy (Girl), is a wire-haired dachshund mix, with a very sweet personality. She caught the eye of her foster mom in the shelter kennel, right next to Felix. Felix, Girl and Helen are now waiting for their forever homes at Denver Dachshunds Rescue in Colorado.
