can present themselves to clients and colleagues. It
can serve for various purposes, such as:

Gaining thought leadership
- 5 -
By focusing on a specific topic and consistently communicating about this topic, IP experts can build
up a reputation as a thought leader.
After a while, the algorithms of LinkedIn and Google will react to the regular posting and display the expert more
often and in a more prominent position.

Networking
- 6 -
LinkedIn helps to generate quickly new relevant business contacts, both
clients and IP experts. This can be achieved by networking with other relevant
experts, e.g. with newsletters, podcasts, recommendations in posts, etc.
By the observation of the posting behaviour and activity of other LinkedIn users, it is easy to
filter relevant contacts and only target the most promising ones, reducing not promising
communication.

Career development
- 7 -
LinkedIn is a valuable tool to make the next step in the career as an IP expert. If
it is a change from private practice to an in-house role or founding an own patent
law firm, LinkedIn can help to generate the relevant contacts and advertise the
own law firm.
Additionally, it can serve as a tool to advertise the patent profession and show possible
career options as a patent attorney to STEM graduates.

Continuous learning
- 8 -
LinkedIn can also serve as a communication platform
between IP experts for continuous learning. Experts can
exchange information about current decisions and trends,
which are shaping the industry.
This can improve the camaraderie within the IP profession and move
the field forward.

Spreading IP awareness
- 9 -
Spreading IP awareness among startups and
SMEs is critical to increase to use of the IP
system by the industry.
Also, in some smaller countries without professional in-
house IP experts this might be necessary to generate
new mandates.

How does LinkedIn work?
- 19 -
LinkedIn is a social network, where personal
communication is critical for success.
Communication needs to be:
• Authentic
• Interactive (Likes and comments matter)
• Regular and consistent
• Algorithm-optimized
Communication does not work as a one-way street.
This makes communication via LinkedIn hard for
institutions / organizations and easier for individuals /
influencers.

How to identify communication targets
- 20 -
To identify relevant contacts on LinkedIn and to communicate with them a variety of support tools are available.
One is the LinkedIn Sales Navigator, which allows you to filter contacts based on industry, role, connection degree, activity and many
more categories. Another is the Linked Helper 2, which allows to setup communication campaigns via the Sales Navigator.
👉 Use the right tools

Influencer vs inactive user
- 21 -
Only around 1% of LinkedIn users post weekly. Most
post impressions go to those few influencers. The
majority of users are passive consumers.
The IP world has a significant number of micro influencers,
who are positioning themselves for specific IP related topics.
