Ann Bristow shared this science based presentation on fracking in Maryland at the Garrett County Commissioner's Meeting on March 17, 2015. Fracking in Garrett County is restricted until October, 2017, when the moratorium is lifted, and the state will permit fracking. Now is the time to get involved and alert law makers to the fact that the risks are immense, and we are NOT willing to be collateral damage.

Dear Governor Heineman:
Thank you for approving the new route for the Keystone XL Pipeline. The project will allow America to gain independence from Middle East and Venezuelan oil by increasing supplies from our loyal, stable and secure ally in Canada. It will also be a major economic development booster for our country and region, not only in the construction of the pipeline, but in further development of Alberta’s oil resources. For every two Canadian jobs created by the oil sands, a third is created in the US. Alberta oil sands development is projected to generate more than $500 billion in US economic impact over the next 25 years.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

EPA Administrator Letter Re: Particulate Matter
1. UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
WASHINGTON. D.C. 20460
OCT 1 4 2011 THE ADMINISTRATOR
The Honorable Amy Klobuchar
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Klobuchar:
Thank you for your phone call regarding the status of EPA's Review of the National Ambient Air
Quality Standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter. Particulate matter includes fine particles (known as
PM2.5) and coarse particles (known as PMI0). PM2.5 can come from fossil-fuel combustion, including
power plants and motor vehicles, and wildfires and PMl 0 can come from construction and demolition
activities, industrial operations, wildfires, and dust from unpaved roads. It is well established that
particulate matter emissions are linked to premature death and numerous adverse health impacts.
We have been making steady progress in reducing emissions of particulate matter-both fine and
coarse--in this country for more than two decades, improving the public health of Americans while the
economy has continued to grow.
It is important that a standard for particulate matter be protective of the health of the public. Based on
my consideration of the scientific record, analysis provided by EPA scientists, and advice from the
Clean Air Science Advisory Council, I am prepared to propose the retention with no revision - of the
current PMlO standard and form when it is sent to OMB for interagency review.
This rulemaking package will also consider the latest scientific evidence and assessments for PM2.5.
Again, thank you for the inquiry. It is EPA's responsibility to protect the health of all Americans - rural
and urban - from known pollutants, including particulate matter. Please feel free to contact me if you
have any questions, or your staff can contact Arvin Ganesan, Associate Administrator for the Office of
Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations at (202) 564 - 4741.
Sincerely,
