3. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural
environment that cause adverse change. Pollution can take the form of
chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. Pollutants, the
components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or
naturally occurring contaminants.
5. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies by human activities. Water
pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water
bodies without enough treatment to get rid of harmful substances.
Types of water pollution:
Surface water pollution
Ground water pollution
Chemical Water Pollution
Oil Spillage
6. Air pollution occurs when gases, dust particles, fumes (or smoke) or odor are
introduced into the atmosphere in a way that makes it harmful to humans, animals
and plant. This is because the air becomes dirty (contaminated or unclean).
Emissions from industries and manufacturing activities
Household and Farming Chemicals
Burning Fossil Fuels
Types of Air pollution:
7. Soil pollution is the deterioration of the earth’s land surfaces, often directly
or indirectly as a result of man’s activities and their misuse of land resources.
Types of Soil Pollution:
Solid Waste
Pesticides and Fertilizers
Chemicals
Deforestation
8. Noise pollution or noise disturbance is the disturbing or excessive noise that may
harm the activity or balance of human or animal life.
Types of Noise Pollution:
Household
Commercial and industrial activities
Social events
Transportation
9. 1. Water Pollution:
Death of aquatic (water) animals
Disruption of food-chains
Water borne diseases
Destruction of ecosystems
2. Air Pollution:
Acidification
Eutrophication
Ground-level ozone
Particulate matter
10. 3. Soil Pollution:
4. Noise Pollution:
Change in climate patterns
Effect on human health
Loss of soil fertility
Illnesses
Speech interference
Hearing loss
Sleep disruption
Lost productivity
11. The Government must ensure that future factories are set up at a distant place, an
industrial complex far away from the township.
Researchers may develop technology to avoid/reduce harmful smoke emission
from vehicles, e-vehicles should be encouraged.
Deforestation should be stopped and new forest areas should be developed.
Discharge of Factory wastes in rivers must be banned so as to make the river-
water free from pollution.
There surely cannot be any radical solution, for the existing factories cannot be bodily
lifted to a place far from the populated zone. However, the following attempts can be
made to solve the problem of environmental pollution.
12. Recycle the sewage or dispose of in such a way as to prevent it from polluting the
environment.
Organic farming could be one solution for reducing environmental pollution
levels.
13. We all have a responsibility towards maintaining our environment and preventing
pollution. Everyone must do his bit towards the same.
