Lead is a naturally occurring metal that can be harmful to human health. It is commonly found in the environment, including in older homes through lead-based paint, contaminated soil and dust, some water sources, as well as some imported toys and hobby supplies. Lead can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin and can damage many body systems. Young children are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning which can cause developmental and learning issues. To help reduce risks, people should wipe surfaces, wash hands frequently, use only cold water for drinking and cooking, test for lead in older homes and buildings, and get informed about lead hazards.
